I am here because I thoroughly enjoy working with students and watching them succeed in their academic studies. As a Mathematics major at the University of Arizona (currently a junior), I have extensive experience teaching and tutoring: I have been a teacher's assistant for a Calculus II section at my university and have spent a great deal of time assisting students with non-math related subjects as well such as English and essay-writing, time management and study skills techniques, and standardized test prep (SAT).

I am more passionate about the latter, and within the humanities I am most passionate about philosophy and English. The most important thing I've learned from those two fields (and the thing I'd most want to pass on to students) is how to find the right words for thoughts - this is important, not just because it allows people to express themselves well to others, but also because it affords clarity to people regarding their own opinions and ideas. Shortly after I graduated from college I embarked on an extended trip around Europe lasting from October 2017 to May 2018. My interests include traveling, piano, and reading.
I am no longer eligible to be a tutor, I have been looking for a way to keep doing what I love!
I am a great tutor because I am young and enthusiastic. I can relate to the kids I tutor because I recently experienced the classes and standardized tests that they are taking. I use an informal style so that the student can feel comfortable asking questions. I try to connect personally to the students so that they have fun and look forward to tutoring. I tutor standardized tests and most high school classes. I have two years of experience tutoring and I spent both this summer and last summer teaching full-time.
I am currently a student at the University of Arizona studying Spanish Translation and Interpretation and minoring in Creative Writing. My favorite subjects to tutor are geometry and writing, as well as the SAT. I like to tutor geometry because I understand that while it comes naturally to me but algebra took a while for me to fully grasp, many people are the exact opposite. I greatly enjoy helping people along the road to that understanding in geometry. My love for writing comes from a similar place, though from the opposite side. I was a terrible writer in middle school, but one writing skills class in high school changed me from a D level writer to a B+/A- level writer and the IB program only made me better. I love tutoring writing skills because I want to help others as much as that class helped me. The SAT is a stressful experience for a lot of kids, but it doesn't need to be. Knowing and practicing the material is important, but there are many other things students can do to prepare as well. In my spare time, I love to play volleyball with friends, read (especially a good fantasy novel) and play a wide variety of card games.
I'm a current medical student at the University of Arizona College of Medicine with undergraduate degrees from Washington and Lee in chemical engineering and anthropology. I have extensive experience in tutoring and teaching since 2010, and am ready to help you with your learning needs! I focus on standardized testing (SAT/ACT) and also tutor in a wide range of math, English, and Spanish classes. In my free time, I like to run, do CrossFit, volunteer, and watch TV!
I am a graduate student at Arizona State University studying Human and Social Dimensions of Science and Technology, and am passionate about the value of education at all levels. Previously I worked at the US Department of Energy on energy technology in Washington, DC. I have enjoyed setting up roots in Phoenix over the past few years, and am excited about sharing my knowledge and passion for learning with others in the area.I have a knack for explaining complicated ideas to people in simple terms, enjoy deepening people's understandings of issues, and value education highly. All of these characteristics make me an ideal tutor for Varsity Tutors, and I look forward to the opportunity to share my academic experiences and skills with tutees. In addition, I can give an expert's perspective on a wide range of topics including political science, public policy, various topics in science and technology, as well as an academic success-oriented mindset.
I'm a junior in chemical engineering at ASU Barrett and I specialize in math and physics tutoring. If you need help with any of your math subjects or have trouble with physics and chemistry I'm the one to call. I love working with students and each and everybody's success is my top priority.
I'm a graduate student and part-time college faculty member in the Phoenix area, but I grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia. I recently moved to Arizona after working as a tutor abroad and am keen to continue tutoring here in my new home. Though I've tutored a wide range of subjects (standardized test prep, French, English, and History, to name a few), the sciences and math are my favorites. I genuinely love the sciences, especially Biology, and I think that this passion and enthusiasm make a real difference while tutoring. I began causally tutoring family friends in high school, and over the years I've worked with students of varied backgrounds -- from those re-taking failed classes to those applying to (and being accepted at) the best universities. I'm proud to say that I've helped all my students reach their goals, frequently pushing them to exceed their expectations.
I'm always trying out new techniques that match the unique strengths of each individual student. I look forward to helping you reach your goals, whether it's writing an essay, practicing Spanish or learning calculus!
I am a recent graduate of the University of Arizona, with a BS in Biology and minors in Mathematics and Biochemistry. I am currently working on computer coding and enjoy tutoring students, specializing in test preparation for the ACT, SAT, and GRE.

Frequently Asked Questions
The SSAT (Secondary School Admission Test) is a standardized test used for admission to private middle and high schools. It's typically taken by students in grades 5-11 and measures verbal reasoning, reading comprehension, math, and writing skills. If you're considering private school options for students in Tucson, understanding the SSAT is an important part of the application process.
Score improvement varies based on starting point and effort, but students working with personalized 1-on-1 instruction often see meaningful gains within 8-12 weeks of focused preparation. The key is identifying your specific weak areas—whether that's reading comprehension, quantitative reasoning, or verbal skills—and targeting practice strategically. Consistent practice combined with expert guidance helps students build confidence and develop test-taking strategies that lead to real score improvements.
The SSAT has three scored sections: Verbal Reasoning (synonyms and analogies), Reading Comprehension, and Quantitative Reasoning (math). Many students struggle most with the Reading Comprehension section because it requires both speed and accuracy under time pressure, while the Verbal section challenges students unfamiliar with advanced vocabulary. The math section often reveals gaps in foundational concepts that need targeted review. Personalized tutoring helps identify which sections need the most attention for each student.
Your first session typically starts with a diagnostic assessment to understand your current strengths and areas for improvement across all three sections. The tutor will also discuss your target score, timeline, and any specific concerns like test anxiety or pacing issues. This foundation helps create a customized study plan that focuses on the skills that will have the biggest impact on your score.
Test anxiety often stems from unfamiliarity with question formats and uncertainty about timing. Working with a tutor helps you practice under timed conditions repeatedly, which builds confidence and reduces anxiety on test day. Tutors also teach specific test-taking strategies—like how to manage difficult questions and pace yourself effectively—so you feel prepared and in control when you sit for the actual test.
Practice tests are essential because they simulate the real testing experience and help you identify patterns in your mistakes. Taking full-length practice tests under timed conditions reveals which question types slow you down and where you lose points. Between practice tests, targeted tutoring helps you understand why you missed questions and teaches strategies to avoid similar mistakes. This cycle of practice, analysis, and skill-building is what drives meaningful score improvement.
Most students benefit from 8-12 weeks of consistent preparation, though this depends on your starting point and target score. Students with strong foundational skills might prepare in 6-8 weeks, while those addressing significant gaps may need 12-16 weeks. The key is consistent, focused practice rather than cramming—working with a tutor helps you develop an efficient study schedule that fits your timeline and maximizes improvement.
Look for tutors with proven experience teaching the SSAT specifically, not just general standardized test prep. They should understand the unique format and content of each section and have a track record of helping students improve their scores. Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors who specialize in SSAT prep and can tailor their approach to your learning style and goals.
