I am a recent graduate of the University of Arizona, with a BS in Biology and minors in Mathematics and Biochemistry. I am currently working on computer coding and enjoy tutoring students, specializing in test preparation for the ACT, SAT, and GRE.

I'm Annelisa, originally from Phoenix, Arizona. I recently graduated from Yale University, where I studied art and its interactions with political journalism and science. I'm happy to tutor on a wide range of subjects, especially writing, college application, and the SAT!
I'm a current medical student at the University of Arizona College of Medicine with undergraduate degrees from Washington and Lee in chemical engineering and anthropology. I have extensive experience in tutoring and teaching since 2010, and am ready to help you with your learning needs! I focus on standardized testing (SAT/ACT) and also tutor in a wide range of math, English, and Spanish classes. In my free time, I like to run, do CrossFit, volunteer, and watch TV!
I am a graduate student at Arizona State University studying Human and Social Dimensions of Science and Technology, and am passionate about the value of education at all levels. Previously I worked at the US Department of Energy on energy technology in Washington, DC. I have enjoyed setting up roots in Phoenix over the past few years, and am excited about sharing my knowledge and passion for learning with others in the area.I have a knack for explaining complicated ideas to people in simple terms, enjoy deepening people's understandings of issues, and value education highly. All of these characteristics make me an ideal tutor for Varsity Tutors, and I look forward to the opportunity to share my academic experiences and skills with tutees. In addition, I can give an expert's perspective on a wide range of topics including political science, public policy, various topics in science and technology, as well as an academic success-oriented mindset.
I'm a junior in chemical engineering at ASU Barrett and I specialize in math and physics tutoring. If you need help with any of your math subjects or have trouble with physics and chemistry I'm the one to call. I love working with students and each and everybody's success is my top priority.
I'm always trying out new techniques that match the unique strengths of each individual student. I look forward to helping you reach your goals, whether it's writing an essay, practicing Spanish or learning calculus!
I'm a graduate student and part-time college faculty member in the Phoenix area, but I grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia. I recently moved to Arizona after working as a tutor abroad and am keen to continue tutoring here in my new home. Though I've tutored a wide range of subjects (standardized test prep, French, English, and History, to name a few), the sciences and math are my favorites. I genuinely love the sciences, especially Biology, and I think that this passion and enthusiasm make a real difference while tutoring. I began causally tutoring family friends in high school, and over the years I've worked with students of varied backgrounds -- from those re-taking failed classes to those applying to (and being accepted at) the best universities. I'm proud to say that I've helped all my students reach their goals, frequently pushing them to exceed their expectations.
I am a senior at Smith College, where I study mathematics. My past mathematical research has included work with Markov chains, random walks, and combinatorial optimization.

Frequently Asked Questions
Score improvement depends on your starting point and how consistently you apply strategies learned. Many students see meaningful gains of 50-100+ points within 8-12 weeks of focused preparation, especially when working on weak sections like reading comprehension or quantitative reasoning. The key is identifying your specific challenge areas early—whether that's pacing, question format familiarity, or content gaps—and targeting those systematically with practice tests and strategy refinement.
Your first session focuses on assessment and goal-setting. A tutor will review your baseline SSAT performance (or administer a diagnostic test if you haven't taken one), discuss your target schools and score goals, and identify which sections need the most work. This helps create a personalized study plan tailored to your timeline and learning style, so every session after that builds directly toward your goals.
The SSAT reading section tests comprehension speed and depth simultaneously—you need to understand complex passages quickly while answering detailed questions about main ideas, inference, and vocabulary in context. Many students struggle with pacing (finishing all passages in time) or distinguishing between what the passage says and what they assume it means. Tutors help you develop efficient reading strategies, practice active annotation, and build confidence in inference questions through targeted drills.
Timing pressure on SSAT math usually comes from attempting every problem at the same pace, rather than prioritizing easier questions first. Effective strategies include quickly scanning all problems, tackling straightforward questions immediately, and saving complex multi-step problems for last if time allows. Tutors teach you to recognize question types instantly, use strategic guessing when needed, and practice timed drills so you develop an intuition for how long each problem should take.
Most students benefit from taking a full-length practice test every 1-2 weeks during active preparation, starting 8-12 weeks before test day. Early tests help identify weak areas; mid-prep tests track progress and refine strategies; final tests build stamina and test-day confidence. Between full tests, focused practice on individual sections (reading, math, writing) keeps skills sharp without causing burnout.
The SSAT writing section rewards clear thinking and strong organization over fancy vocabulary—admissions officers want to see how you express ideas, not whether you use complex words. Practice involves brainstorming quickly, outlining essays in 1-2 minutes, and writing multiple timed essays to build speed and consistency. Tutors help you develop a reliable essay structure, practice under time pressure, and learn to self-edit efficiently so you can refine your work in the final minutes.
Test anxiety often stems from uncertainty about what to expect or feeling unprepared for specific question types. Tutoring builds confidence through repeated exposure to real SSAT questions and formats, so nothing surprises you on test day. Additionally, practicing relaxation techniques, arriving early to get comfortable with the testing environment, and reviewing your study progress before the exam all help calm nerves and let you focus on executing the strategies you've practiced.
An effective SSAT tutor understands the test's specific format and scoring, can diagnose your weak areas quickly, and teaches both content knowledge and strategic test-taking skills. Look for someone with a track record helping students improve scores, experience explaining complex concepts clearly, and the ability to adapt their teaching style to how you learn best. Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors for students in Mesa who specialize in SSAT prep and can build a customized study plan around your goals.
