I'm an Undergraduate student studying Mechanical Engineering and Linguistics at the University of Kansas. I specialize in Mathematics and English, and I enjoy helping others reach their goals in their academic careers. I believe anyone can learn a skill or subject, once they view it from the right perspective!

I graduated from UNC Chapel Hill in May 2019 with degrees in Biology and Global Studies. I have been holding private tutoring sessions for students between the ages 5 and 18 for the past six years. In addition, I was an Anatomy and Physiology teaching assistant in college. While in college, I also taught English to students in Ecuador and Nicaragua. I have experience in tutoring English (reading and writing), math (elementary school level, pre-algebra, algebra, and statistics), science (biology, chemistry, and environmental science), social studies, SAT prep, and ACT prep. While I tutor a wide range of subjects, my favorite subject to tutor is science because this subject is constantly evolving and there is always more to learn! I strongly believe that the ability to learn is a gift!

My name is Alan; my educational background includes a Masters degree in Financial Engineering from Polytechnic University in Brooklyn, New York and a Ph.D. in Economics from Fordham University in Bronx, New York. I also hold the FRM (Financial Risk Manager) certification offered by the Global Association of Risk Professionals. My primary teaching areas are statistics, economics (micro, macro, international trade, international finance) and finance (corporate finance, investments, financial markets, risk management, derivative securities.)

I have been an educator for nine years, and I have always enjoyed working with students one on one in order to help them reach their fullest potential. This year, I have stepped out of the classroom in order to work with teachers, and I miss working with students on a daily basis. So, as a tutor, I am able to get back to my passion of teaching students.I believe that every student has the ability to achieve the highest levels of learning. I also believe that a solid educational foundation sets the stage for life long success. Sometimes, there are gaps in a student's knowledge, and it is my job to locate these gaps in order to help the student move forward. I also believe in the power of student centered learning. Students who are able to think critically to solve problems will be able to continue learning even when working on their own. Therefore, I will challenge students to persevere through difficult content while providing the optimum level of support to reduce frustration and increase independence.Finally, I believe in a love of learning. Throughout all of my work with my students, I always strive to help students discover the joys of understanding new ideas and overcoming obstacles. I look forward to sharing these ideals with my students as I help them meet their tutoring goals.

I am a Math Teacher with 17 years experience teaching middle school math, high school math, and a little English for Speakers of Other Languages. I am from the midwest, "where the women are strong and the children are above average". I went to Kansas State University for my undergraduate degree and to University of Central Missouri for my graduate degree in Teaching, Curriculum and Instruction. I have tutored at Metropolitan Community College, and also taught some math classes. Right now I am tutoring Middle School, 9th and 10th grade, and hope to soon add Pre-Calculus and Algebra II to my repertoire. I am a visual learner, but am also both brained: technical and creative. I play disc golf, I bicycle, and gardening is currently a passion of mine.

Personal Statement as an EducatorMy personal philosophy of education is based in life-long learning and a learner-centered approach.I hope to inspire the learner to continue learning throughout their lifespan. Education is empowering and when we feel empowered, inspired and motivated, there is nothing we can't do. A thirst for knowledge can see us through the best and the worst of times.My approach to education has always been learner-centered. It is not about what is taught, but what is learned. Seeing learners as individuals with lives beyond the educational setting is key. With education, we can see hardships as challenges with solutions that are yet to be found.

I am a graduate of Simsbury High School and I am expected to graduate Brandeis University in 2024 with a double major in biology and HSSP (Health: Science, Society, and Policy). I have tutored a fourth grader in math; high school students in math, chemistry, and French; and college students in chemistry and genetics. I strive to make personal connections with my students so that they do not just feel like bullets on a list. In explaining the material, I try to break it down into smaller steps since humans are naturally more motivated to achieve goals that seem more manageable. I want every student to feel capable and to possess a growth mindset.

My graduating GPA was 3.67 and I am a member of several honor societies. I participated in the SMU study abroad program, and previously obtained an Associate of Arts in Teaching Degree in Foreign Languages with a GPA of 4.0.I also have over a year experience tutoring high school students in AVID program; moreover I was an intern for the French American Chamber of Commerce. I did my minor in Economics, which is the reason why I had to take many calculus courses and advanced math classes.I was born in Colombia, therefore my first language is Spanish; also I had the opportunity to study abroad in Paris while I was doing my undergrad career.I believe each student has the potential to master new concepts with the right approach and I will love to help you achieve your goals!!!
