I received my Bachelors in Education from Hunter College, and my Masters in Education, with a certificate in school psychology, from Queens College. After working as a school psychologist for six years, I became a homeschooling mom. In addition to homeschooling my four children, over the past ten years I have taught hundreds of students in Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1 and 2, Geometry, College Algebra, and SAT Prep. My background has allowed me to work successfully with children who have learning difficulties. Teaching students how to study and helping them achieve their academic goals is extremely rewarding. When I am not teaching, I enjoy reading and traveling.

I'm Mrs. S for short, I am so excited to be here and share a creative learning experience with your little learners.Education:I am a student for a Doctorate of Education at Regent University. I am a graduate of Liberty University with a Master's in Human Service Counseling, Adult and Child Development. An undergraduate in Early Childhood Education. I am also trained in Orton Gillingham's approach, the Wilson Reading program for dyslexic and reading deficiencies. I am trained to administer informed assessments to gather data for initial and ending growth for students. The data is helpful for planning and IEP support. Methods:The most important aspect of reading is to learn word patterns and spelling rules. All words consist of a pattern. Vowels are the glue to form a word. I use the Wilson Language System because it provides a structured curriculum. OG is not a curriculum but an approach to teaching the patterns of words. The two together complement each other and are both proven for success when followed.Personal Statement:I am dyslexic and have ADHD so I have first-hand experience. I provide compassion, patience, and understanding to each student building confidence.I developed a passion for dyslexic learners several years ago when my daughter was diagnosed. It was a long journey finding the right resources and providers but after a lot of research and training, she has shown tremendous growth. I am a wife to a soldier in the Navy, with 3 kids, and 2 grandchildren. They all make my life full and full of love. I cannot wait to meet you and your children so I can be a part of the fun personal learning experiences we will get to share together.

AP French Language and Culture Tutor • +25 Subjects
I started teaching in my junior year of high school where I was a part of the Virginia's Teachers for Tomorrow program. With this program, I taught Spanish and French to Middle School students. I was also sort of a teacher's aid when it came to helping students in my mixed AP German class assisting the other students who were taking German I. World languages are my fort and I enjoy helping others to understand them better.Since my teaching revolves around language learning, my teaching philosophy focuses on how to achieve fluency. There are several skills that involve language learning which include speaking, writing, reading, grammar, vocabulary, and listening. Everyone is quick to say that speaking is the most important and the only skill you will need to have. However, I have been in many German, Spanish, and French classes and I always see a pattern. The pattern is that students are able to say any sentence in a language, but have difficulty responding to what a native speaker says. This is why I believe that listening is the most important skill in acquiring fluency. A conversation dies if you are not able to understand what was said to you.

I was a teacher for 13.5 years, teaching grades 5-12. I have loved it, but I needed a change of scenery, so I left to pursue another career. However, I feel that I am not finished teaching completely and I hope to have a positive impact on students by tutoring them when they are struggling. I know learning another language is challenging, but it can also be so much fun and can open up so many doors for a student! In my spare time, I love to travel (either long or short trips), read , work out, cook, and spend time with family and friend. I also love getting together with my Spanish-speaking friends to catch up and I get to use my Spanish language skills!

Let me start off by saying, I love to read. My dream job would be a place where I could read all day. It doesn't matter the subject, it's just the joy of reading that I love. The way reading takes you to different places in time. You can be an astronaut, enlist in the military, go back in time. The world is completely open and the limits are as far as your imagination can take you. I want to instill that love for reading in the children that I work with.A little background about myself. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Business Management through the University of Phoenix. I am a US Navy veteran, where I spent 5 years of my life and was able to use my military benefits to completely pay for my college. I am thinking about going back to school for my Master's in Psychology, but I am taking a break from school for now. I have four children. A son, 20, who is in college, a daughter, 16, who will be graduating high school this year, then twin seven year olds, who are in the 2nd grade. I work at BAE Systems as a Material Control Planner II. To put it the easy way, I figure out which parts the Navy ships need to be fixed and I buy those parts.I am able to tutor reading, writing, math, study and homework skills, plus help with the ASVAB. My favorite subjects to tutor and to learn about would have to be reading and math. Both of these subjects are very interesting to me, and I want to make them fun and exciting for other people too.My hobbies outside of work and tutoring would be reading, video games, music and movies. My favorite authors are Danielle Steel, Jodi Picoult, and VC Andrews. My favorite video games are Call of Duty; Advanced Warfare, Rockband, and Guitar Hero. I will watch any action/adventure movies, along with horror and sci-fi. I am a huge Star Trek fan and Have plans to go to Tidewater Comic-con next year in May.

I want to help students better grasp and understand subjects and continue to move further in their studies because I do not want a class or two that do not comply with their academic strengths to possibly obstruct their path on the way to fulfilling their dreams. I have worked with students on a personal level as an on-call tutor, in a group setting as part of group of tutors assisting students, and on a professional level serving as their laboratory instructor. The highlight of each of these experiences was seeing the lightbulb switch on in their eyes as they began to grasp the concepts or problems that they wee struggling with. I currently serve as a general biology and general chemistry tutor.I earned by Biology degree while on the pre-veterinarian medicine track at Bridgewater College; I am currently seeking to go to graduate school for Biotechnology, Immunology, or Virology. My favorite subject to tutor currently is chemistry because many students see it as a daunting subject and I take great pride in helping students overcome that mindset and realize that it is a course they can succeed in. Outside of tutoring, I am an avid volleyball player and a track athlete. When I can I play videogames in my spare time or take a day on the city that I am in and see what activities that are available such as: laser tag, movies, arcades, paintball, or lounging at the beach or pool. My philosophy when it comes to teaching is that to understand the bigger picture you have to be able to understand what makes up each section, you have comprehend the little pieces to understand how they all come together. By that sentiment I try to see what the student understands and lead them to being able to fit all the pieces together to understand the problem.

I love meeting new people, and am very friendly. I joke around with people, but also know when to be serious. I believe that incorporating humor into learning can make the experience much more enjoyable, and therefore more effective. It's easy to spark an interest when learning becomes fun!I gained a lot of experience tutoring while in high school - from helping friends with homework to teaching workshops on SAT Math. I've noticed that a lot of students aren't struggling to understand a concept, but rather are struggling to understand how the concept is being presented. By contextualizing learning to REAL problems, I find it much easier to make students care about what they are learning.
