Do you hate school? Feel helpless and hopeless? I know that feeling well! I used to feel that way until I went to college. Now, I am a teacher! After lots of frustration and great struggles, I realized that everyone can learn. With a positive growth mindset and the right support, all goals are achievable. I have taught and tutored students from kindergarten to college. I have been teaching English and English as a New Language at the middle school level for the last thirteen years. As a parent with two children currently in college, I know what it takes to get there and be successful. My favorite subjects to teach and tutor are reading and writing. I believe that good readers become good writers. Good readers and writers learn to think critically and become great communicators. All subjects are connected to reading and writing! In my spare time I am a huge music fan. My own children tell me that I am occasionally funny and sort of cool, but what do they know?

Education is one of those institutions that is so ubiquitous in modern society that one rarely thinks to question what its purpose might be, why it exists at all, what the world might be like without it. These questions, however, are of dire importance, and the less we think about them, the more likely our systems of education are to stray from utility into irrelevance.Education stems from a variety of sources. Many Native American societies used it to teach their young valuable lessons learned in their lives and the lives of their ancestors that those children might avoid repeating mistakes of the past. The Pilgrims were part of a widespread tradition that used it primarily to instruct children in the values and precepts of their religion. Our Founding Fathers desired to create an informed and productive citizenry that would steer our democracy in the right direction. Many would purport that our modern system of public schooling is simply a form of social control, the true motivation of the nineteenth-century legislators who created it.While there may be value in all of these and still other perspectives, my own viewpoint aligns closest with that of the Native Americans. Albert Camus summarized the crux of this purpose most succinctly in his 1947 novel The Plague: "The evil that is in the world almost always comes of ignorance, and good intentions may do as much harm as malevolence if they lack understanding." The world is an astoundingly complex place filled with an astounding variety of people and creatures, but the knowledge and understanding which our predecessors hand down to us, assuming we are receptive to it, allow us to reach greater success and perhaps even greater contentment than they ever could.Of course any philosophy of education which credits Camus is likely to be a bit on the abstract side, but my perspective has at least one very real and tangible consequence: in this day and age, the abundant knowledge and understandings we receive from those who came before us are absolutely necessary to get into a good college, find a good job, and make a good living. For many, this is the more important "purpose of education." I remain hesitant to place such a high value on something that is so essentially material, but it is hard not to mention it.The role of the student in education is to be both open and committed to learning and mastery. Learning never ends, and the student should view his education in these terms. The student must be aware of the benefits education has for him. In an ideal world, this is enough to keep him focused on his learning and on mastery of skills and content. In the real world, there are many distractions and gaps steering him in the wrong direction. The role of the teacher is to guide the student toward learning and mastery, as well as to prioritize and organize learning in a way that is most beneficial. It is true that many of the best students scarcely need a teacher. History abounds with examples of men and women like Abraham Lincoln who rose to the pinnacle of human intellect and capability more or less without any need for a teacher. Unfortunately, these people are the exception by far. Most of us do need guidance, and that is why people like me have a job. Again, in an ideal world, this would be where the teacher's role would end, but, as mentioned above, many students find themselves distracted from their learning by a variety of factors or even impaired by gaps in background knowledge and skills. It then becomes the role of the teacher also to incentivize education itself and to intervene in order to close those gaps and bring every student to a high level of achievement. The teacher's role does not end in the classroom. Especially considering the true purpose of education is staving off ignorance and thereby ameliorating social intercourse, a teacher must be on twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. A teacher must model good citizenship that his students can learn by example. In order to do so, a teacher must be an active and benevolent participant in his community. Thus, students can witness the value of education by witnessing it firsthand from a person with whom they have an actual relationship.

My child is now an adult. I did supervise and assist my son with his American 'smart kid' homework for 6 years but did not ever do it for him. When he was in high school I couldn't help him that much as we were in Germany.Subjects that I tutored, in chronological order start way before I became a mother. I tutored a little philosophy as I liked it and was good at it. I think I may have helped someone with maths as I could do that to. I did also teach groups of children activities at a Summer Camp: like basic canoeing and how to boondoggle.Back in the early 2000s, I did help grade ISTEP one year. In 2003, I was adjunct faculty in IUPUI's Philosophy Dept. In 2006, I taught two creative writing workshops through Continuing Education. In 2012, I taught advanced intermediate English (TEFL, uncertified) to 3 adults in Germany.I love helping people learn and to share a natural enthusiasm. I'm open to teaching both children and adults.Currently, I am actively training for TEFL certification through the International Open Academy.Although I did take: Latin (3 mos.) French (3 mos.), Spanish (2 & 1/2 yrs) in the American educational system of the 1980s. I have received most of my own second language education from KVHS: German language learning for adults living in Germany as foreigners or immigrants. I believe this gives me especial insight into second language learning.

I am a recent college graduate with a degree in both Biomedical Engineering and Applied Mathematics. I worked for various departments as a tutor and Teacher's Assistant for mathematics and engineering courses starting in my sophomore year all the way through graduation. It was some of my most exciting times during my years there. For me, working with students is the most rewarding part, and I love seeing the moment a difficult concept clicks. When I tutor I adjust my teaching style to the student, and find various ways to relate the topics to real life. I'll often work with students to make sure they understand the basics or foundations of the concept or problem they are attempting and help them learn to think through and understand a process over pure memorization.

I am a lifelong learner with a B.A in psychology (minor in philosophy) from Butler University, an M.S. in psychology from Walden University and an MSW (masters in social work) from Indiana University. I have been teaching graduate students for several years and am passionate about supporting students in their process. I enjoy tutoring human and social sciences, and if I had to pick a favorite topic I would say it is psychology because that is where my journey began. I am a believer in early reading and writing because this is the foundation of all other learning, and of being successful in life.I believe that every learner is unique and it is important to work with the strengths of the individual; it is my job to support the learner so that they may meet their goals. Aside from teaching and tutoring, I enjoy taking art courses, drawing, illustration and painting, and spending time with family and our animals.

Ever since I was a child, I've had a strong passion for the STEM subjects. This passion eventually became more specialized as my focus turned more towards the physical sciences and the related mathematics in thereof. It is this interest that led me to taking as many advanced classes as possible throughout middle and high school, eventually bringing me to Indiana University where I earned a full ride to study chemistry. In addition to doing everything I can to improve my own educational progression, I have always had an interest in helping those around me do the best they can as well. Starting in highschool, I began tutoring some of my peers and lower classes to great success in several different topics. I pride myself by taking a very personal approach in every session to ensure the student not only has a firm grasp on the material itself, but how to apply it in such a way that promotes success in the classroom as well. Thanks for reading a bit about me and I hope I have a chance to meet you!
