How can a tutor help you master the SAT?

The SAT is a standardized test that evaluates students' skills in writing and language, critical reading, and mathematics. Many colleges use the score obtained on this assessment to decide which students they admit into their school, so it is very important for those who take the SAT to obtain a good score. A student may be confused on how to even begin studying on their own, especially when they are bogged down with a number of other classes and commitments. To makes matters worse, the SAT may cover subjects that they have never studied before, meaning that they have to learn them from scratch. This may all be overwhelming to tackle by yourself, but having a structured study time with a personal tutor may be a huge help. The educational directors at Varsity Tutors may connect you with brilliant SAT tutors in and around Memphis, TN. You don't need to feel worried about the SAT any longer, because your tutor could help you achieve the high score that you need.

Having to study for the SAT may be a huge annoyance for students, considering the amount of other classes and extracurricular activities they have going on. It may seem impossible to fit a tutor into your schedule, and we recognize that sentiment. For that reason we may find you a skilled SAT tutor in Memphis, TN, who may offer you individualized one-on-one attention, and may work around your schedule. Session Summaries by SAT Tutors

SAT Tutoring review by Terrence in Memphis, TN
We spent a lot of time going over the SAT format, types of questions and ways to go through the test at the beginning of the session to familiarize the student with the content of the SAT. We then did a math section and a writing section, and went in depth over questions he had involving how to approach questions. This ended up filling the whole session, but I did see that he was doing well in math questions when he understood the question and alright in the improving paragraph and sentences parts of Writing.

SAT Tutoring review by Joshua in Memphis, TN
We began by looking at a math section that the student had taken between our meetings but which he had not checked and reviewed. He got 11 correct, 1 incorrect, and did not answer 4. He was confident about almost all the questions he answered. We looked at the ones he did not answer correctly and focused on how the testing strategies could have helped him. For example, choosing values to test would have helped him answer a few problems. Then he worked on a critical reading section. Instead of taking 25 minutes to work on an entire section, he worked on groups of problems, beginning with the sentence completion questions and moving to the passage-based questions. He started off okay, using elimination strategies on some of the more difficult sentence completions. After completing one full section, we began another critical reading section. Next steps: -When he encounters words he doesn't know, he needs to think about whether he has seen the word or similar words before and try to recall the context. He does this naturally sometimes but at other times does not try this strategy. -When he stops after each paragraph to make meaning, he should not simply answer, "This paragraph is about ______," but instead should say, "This paragraph is saying __________ about ____________." -Focus on the beginning and ending of long passages. -Look at and seriously consider all the answers. Sometimes he instinctively decides an answer is incorrect without thinking it through, and sometimes he decides an answer must be right in the same way. -Don't be overwhelmed by passages and questions. Remember that the passages and questions are not arranged by difficulty. Lastly, more practice in both the critical reading and math will continue to help him feel more confident. I think that the next time we work on critical reading, I would like to hear him verbalize how he is working through each question and passage.

SAT Tutoring review by Brendan in Memphis, TN
The student and I had our last session before her test Wednesday. We worked on some timed sections from a practice test, one section from each subject on the SAT. She did a good job of getting a look at each question well before time was up on each section. She had lots of time to go back and work on harder questions. I recommended to her that she be careful to mark which questions she guessed on, in case she has time to go back and work on those. She seems to be in a good place to take the exam Wednesday. She has pretty high scores from a previous test, but I think she should be able to improve upon those.

SAT Tutoring review by Michael in Memphis, TN
We did the same routine as always, with strikingly similar results. She is probably the most consistent student I've ever worked with, so I expect her real scores to mirror her practice test scores which are in the low-mid 600s in each section.

SAT Tutoring review by Michael in Memphis, TN
We worked mostly on Math and Reading today, with some Writing (correcting sentences) near the end. The student knows all the math required to solve what she needs to; it is just sometimes the most oddball questions that she will get wrong. We reviewed direct vs. inverse varying and focused on identifying the most important part of the question (the end). In Reading, we worked with a read-by-pieces strategy for long passages, identifying which questions could be answered just with a piece of the passage. We also practiced the strategy of imagining what a possible answer would look like, if manifested in the passage.

SAT Tutoring review by Carolina in Memphis, TN
Today we spent time reviewing various practice sessions that the student had taken. After going over this, I had him do a complete writing section. He did great! Overall, he is feeling much more comfortable with the material. I asked him to complete another practice section before our next meeting.
