How can a tutor help you master the SAT?

The SAT is a standardized test designed to assess high school students on their mathematical and verbal abilities. The score students receive on this test is one of the factors colleges use when determining whether or not to accept applicants. The SAT has undergone major changes, and it is now comprised of just two sections: math and evidence-based reading and writing. Studying for this test outside of your regular coursework can be challenging, and what's harder still is that you may have to learn concepts that you haven't even covered in school yet. If you'd like extra help with preparing for the SAT, consider working with an experienced personal tutor. Varsity Tutors can help you locate SAT tutors in Houston, Texas, who can work with you at your convenience.

SAT Tutoring review by Jason in Houston, TX
During this session, the student and I spent about an hour reviewing percentage increases and decreases, and the variations of questions on the SAT that involve this concept. During the second half of the session, the student worked on his essay writing. He's continuing to increase the number of note cards he's working with and his writing is improving. .

Today we did a full times a essay, a timed math section and a timed reading section. The students essays have improved significantly since we have started, and that was our main focus. He's doing very and the test isn't too far away, I expect him to do well.

SAT Tutoring review by Taylor in Houston, TX
This time the student and I worked primarily on question apprehension and work-checking strategies. This included a reading exercise where we created our own questions from passages. After that we addressed methods of "stepping aside" from our original reasoning in order to double check it from a new direction. He is doing very well, and continues to identify topics we addressed in past lessons (we saw quite a bit of "incompatible comparisons" again in the writing, and he fared very well this time).

SAT Tutoring review by Bryan in Houston, TX
We did a whole math section and most of a verbal section. She is improving with each session. I am very happy with how she is progressing. Since her schedule is so busy, I asked her to just send me one of her essays that she has written for school instead of writing a practice SAT essay.

SAT Tutoring review by Harris in Houston, TX
We went over 7 math homework that I'd given him. I gave him three new ones to do for the next session, which will be Tuesday night. He is making progress on the vocabulary lists I've given him and feels more comfortable with linear equations. We need to review setting up algebra problems and exponent rules and I will be emailing him notes on those topics. We also reviewed the essay structure and he said now he thinks he needs to study the writing section a little more. I gave him two practice essay questions. He seems to be making more progress. There is very little he fundamentally fails to understand...he just needs to focus while taking the test and we will continue to work on strategies addressing that goal.

SAT Tutoring review by John in Houston, TX
The student and I worked on a reading section and a math section of his SAT. I looked at his most recent scores and suggested that he try answering less questions. Just by answering fewer questions, his score will go up significantly -- it already did in the practice sections we worked on.
