I graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor's degree in Biology in May of 2013. My coursework at Penn emphasized Chemistry, English, and Writing in addition to Biology. During my college years, I worked for the Penn Tutoring Center as a General Chemistry tutor. Although I enjoy teaching this subject most of all, I am experienced in a broad range of subjects. I am enthusiastic about helping students to learn course material ranging from Biology and Chemistry to English and Writing.I took the MCAT exam in August of 2012 and completed all of my medical school prerequisites at Penn prior to graduating. I wanted to expand my research and teaching background after college, so I am taking two gap years before starting medical school. During the day, I work at Penn's Abramson Cancer Center as a clinical research coordinator; however, I am very passionate about teaching others how to learn more efficiently. My schedule is very flexible during weeknights and weekends, and I want to use this time to help other students to succeed. Besides tutoring, in my free time I find personal satisfaction in music, fitness, and nature. My hobbies include singing, playing the guitar, biking, and cooking.I am available to tutor high school and college students in their regular coursework as well as in standardized test preparation. I learned a lot of effective test-taking strategies while completing my undergraduate degree and taking the SAT and MCAT standardized tests. When I think of what learning means to me, I think of gaining knowledge or a skill based upon being taught, studying yourself, or an experience. My grandfather used to always say that "education is the one thing people can't take away from you" and it is true, once you know something it's there to stay. A successful learning situation for myself would be being able to teach someone something, not only so they understand it, but also understand it enough to ask questions and think critically about it. I want to be able to challenge and intrigue my students, and leave them curious about the subjects they are learning.I place a high value on critical thinking, while tutoring the best question I can be asked is "But why" it means the student is thinking critically about the answer and the concept and not just trying to learn the answer. A teaching method I employ often is the use of a real-life example. Something that I think helps a student learn a concept is being able to apply what they are learning in their subjects to their everyday life. Breaking down something in terms of an idea that the student can relate too can be beneficial when trying to help them grasp a concept. Additionally, I place a high value on being able to switch up the teaching method if I see that one method is not working and a student is still struggling.Currently, I am studying at Drexel University in a dual degree program to obtain my Bachelors and Masters in Psychology. Psychology is a favorite subject of mine to tutor but another favorite of mine is english and reading comprehension. Outside of the academic world I also enjoy reading for fun as well as running and learning to cook new dishes. I have had experience working with children through years of being a camp counselor and I have had direct tutoring experience from helping local Philadelphia residents work towards their GEDs at a community center near my house.I would like to have a tutoring environment where students feel comfortable to challenge themselves as well as me. I received my bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering from Lafayette College, and received my master's in Engineering from Brown University. I then worked in various technical roles at a startup data analytics company for about 6 years. But my interests reach far beyond the STEM field. I also studied fine art for several years, and have skills with painting, sculpture, pottery, and many other crafts. I love to garden, forage wild foods, hike, and connect with nature. I have 2 Permaculture design certificates and worked in farming/gardening for a few years. (If you haven't heard of Permaculture, I highly recommend looking it up. It's awesome!)My next big life goal is to learn more about natural building - that is, building homes from materials that are abundantly available to us from the natural world, like clay, sand, straw, and even living plants! It is so fascinating that something as small as a virus or bacteria can wreck so much havoc on the body. I finish off my nerd pedigree with a love for StarTalk Radio, Bill Nye the Science Guy, and the Big Bang Theory.In my spare time I enjoy running (I've run 5 half marathons and had to recently stop training for a full marathon due to a stress fracture in my foot), hanging out with friends, and exploring Philadelphia.I like to tutor by having conversations with students. I don't pretend to have all of the answers, but together I hope to be able to work through any questions that you may have. Memorization and understanding are two different things, and the more you understand the more you'll remember!
