How can a tutor help you master the PSAT?

Students in the tenth and eleventh grades often take the PSAT, and for a couple of different reasons. First, it's a good introduction to the SAT that you may take in eleventh or twelfth grade. Second, as indicated by the test's other name, the NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test), if you get an excellent score, you may be eligible for the National Merit Scholarship. There are also PSAT tests that may be taken in your eighth, ninth, of tenth grade year, just to measure your progress so far, but which do not count towards eligibility for the scholarship. This test may likely be your first national standardized test, and it would be wise to prepare for it with a personal tutor. Varsity Tutors may find you a hand-picked PSAT tutor in Boston who may love what they teach, which allows them to make your study sessions engaging.

There are two components to the PSAT. First is the evidence-based reading and writing section, which tests your ability to use words in context, your command of evidence, your ability to use informational graphics, and to find out how advanced you are with text complexity. The math section tests your abilities in advanced math and algebra, your abilities to problem solve and analyze data, and other math topics. Your goal when taking the test may be just to practice for the SAT, or you may be really focused on getting the National Merit Scholarship. Whatever your reasons, our educational directors may connect you with a PSAT tutor in Boston, MA, after considering all of your specific goals and needs.

Session Summaries by PSAT Tutors

PSAT Tutoring review by Grant in Boston, MA
The student and I worked on PSAT practice for math, reading, and writing. I timed her on a few sections; she did well but wasn't quite able to finish. Vocabulary was a bit of a stumbling block. The student stayed focused, and the session was very good, as usual.

PSAT Tutoring review by Ishita in Boston, MA
Today we started by going over more math. We worked on some geometry and algebra. He's okay on geometry since he just took it, but is very rusty on his algebra. We also went over the writing skills section some more, which is probably his strongest area, so we won't need to focus on it too much more.

PSAT Tutoring review by Denise in Boston, MA
Today the student and I spent much of our time working through PSAT math concepts, including plugging-in and choosing a number. We worked through several sample problems until she felt comfortable using both methods. We also spent some time reviewing grammar and learning strategies for the writing portion of the exam.

PSAT Tutoring review by Benjamin in Boston, MA
We worked through a math section, trying to eliminate errors that have to do with working too fast. The student can finish math sections in about half the allotted time. When he double checks his answers on questions he considers easy, his accuracy improves considerably. Our goal for the math section is in the high 70's because he can probably achieve a perfect score on a good day. We also looked at a couple of vocabulary builder apps for his smartphone.

The student started reviewing vocabulary. He had an additional 30 words to define, and finished the incomplete reading section as homework.

PSAT Tutoring review by Courtney in Boston, MA
I wanted to do an overview of all of our test taking strategies in each section. The student does extremely well in reading and needs very little guidance in her approach to those questions. Once explained, I think the material is easy for her to understand and we are continuing to work to get her confidence up. I am teaching her how to approach problems from a more "humanities"-minded perspective instead of having her fret over not getting the math perfect. The student also did well in the writing section, but did better with the rhetoric questions than the grammar/usage.
