Session Summaries by Microbiology Tutors

Microbiology Tutoring review by Noah in Austin, TX
In today's session, the student and I covered equilibrium with regards to solubility products (ksp). In this session, this was an extension of the equilibrium problems but using different forms. She was able to tackle the problems anew with my guidance and really grasp the situation. From what it looked like, she was able to approach the problems without as much concern and more confidence, which is always a good sign. The student has continued to improve in her skills and I hope that she continues to work on the ICE tables as they are used a lot. She is able to tackle all the material and go beyond in understanding the effects of temperature and common ions, bringing back relevant material we covered in the previous sessions.

The student and I touched base today and went over what he is working on currently, which is molecular geometry and bonding. This is a difficult and abstract topic so I taught him strategies I used when learning this topic in college. In addition, I gave him some test taking tips and study tips to utilize. The student is smart and picks up on things quickly. As we continue to work and practice I expect him to begin to better understand the material quite quickly.

Microbiology Tutoring review by Clinton in Austin, TX
During today's session, the student and I reviewed a recent quiz he took in his class. We went through all of the problems, and I pointed out his mistakes to him. The problems focused on stoichiometry, limiting reagents, and percent yield. I also asked him to complete a few of the example problems from his textbook. He seemed to understand the concept, and he got these problems correct. We discussed the importance of studying everyday and using repetition to really learn these problems. To that end, I recommended videos for him to watch, and I gave him a list of practice problems to complete. The student displayed a very positive attitude.

We reviewed covalent, ionic and metallic bonds. We also focused on polarity with nonpolar and polar compounds. We conducted practice with Lewis structures of common compounds with basic steps to achieve correct structures. We conducted an overview of resonance structures and formal charges. We compared and contrasted VSEPR and hybridization theories and how they affect structure or shape. We conducted corrections for a previous test for mastery of concepts.

Microbiology Tutoring review by Nagapoornima in Austin, TX
It was apparent today that the student has learned a lot in the past few sessions. He was able to talk me through all of the paragraphs in his model. He seems to be understanding the material very well, and he only forgot a few small details. We will continue reviewing every lesson to increase his confidence on the subject, but he definitely has a good grasp on the material. Tomorrow, we are going to talk a little bit more about poor quality protein vs. high quality protein.

Microbiology Tutoring review by Sarah in Austin, TX
The student and I reviewed several topics that will be on her upcoming summative evaluation during this session, including photoelectron spectroscopy, periodic trends, Lewis dots structures/molecular geometry, and kinetic molecular theory. We also went through several AP free response problems together, which she did very well on. She required help on a few pieces of the questions, but overall was able to complete most of the work very confidently on her own. She has improved immensely in the past few months.
