How can a tutor help your child master the HSPT?

The High School Placement Test, or HSPT, is commonly administered by Catholic high schools. Many of these schools heavily weigh the scores of this exam when considering students' applications. The HSPT examines students' abilities in areas such as math, language, and reading. If your student is hoping to get into a Catholic high school soon, it is vital for them to do well on the HSPT. A skilled professional tutor can help your child work toward their goals. Varsity Tutors can help you connect with Boston, Massachusetts, HSPT tutoring today.

The HSPT consists of about 300 questions and your child will be given two and a half hours to complete it. The exam is only given two times a year, in the fall and in the spring, so you want to make sure that your child is ready when the time comes to take the exam. If your child struggles with math concepts that are on the test, including algebra, geometry, and problem-solving, a private HSPT tutor can help them prepare. They will also be tested on things such as reading comprehension, logic, Catholic religion, and spelling. You can help them prepare by finding a tutor to work with them one-on-one. The educational directors at Varsity Tutors are available to help you find Boston HSPT tutors today.

Session Summaries by HSPT Tutors

HSPT Tutoring review by Danielle in Boston, MA
The first student completed another language section of one of the practice test books. Next time we will begin looking at some of the earlier chapters in the book that offer explanations and test taking tips. I worked through some more math problems with the second student. I asked her to complete another practice test section or two before our next meeting.

HSPT Tutoring review by Suzanne in Boston, MA
First, I went back over some of the math topics we had covered last session (long division, multiplying decimals, multiplying numbers with multiple digits) to see what he remembered. I gave him some more practice problems, and he seemed to get a better grasp of these topics. Then, I taught him some new math concepts, including basic algebra and geometry. We also spent some time practicing vocabulary flashcards.

HSPT Tutoring review by Carolyn in Boston, MA
We went over long division. He's getting better about moving decimals, but he tends to leave out a step in the division. Then we went over multiplication, focusing on multiplying the units place before the tens place. We some practice with his multiplication flashcards, and talked about why it was important for him to memorize them. Finally, we touched on some basic algebra concepts, where he caught onto everything very fast and seemed to even enjoy himself.

HSPT Tutoring review by Mary in Boston, MA
We reviewed the whole Algebra I packet, and the student got everything right. He definitely understands what he's doing but wants to know the best way to show his work. We went through each question and wrote out the solutions. I assigned him a verbal section for test prep that we discuss during our next meeting. We are going to focus mostly on language and mathematics, although we will spend some time on verbal, quantitative, and reading. The student is a smart and nice kid, and I enjoyed working with him.

HSPT Tutoring review by Molly in Boston, MA
Today we practiced the math and some writing sections. In the math section we practiced area, volume, angles, and coordinate planes. Some of this was new to the student, and some was practice. Next we practiced analogies and synonyms in the English section. She did very well with the words that she knew, so I have assigned her homework to increase her vocabulary.

HSPT Tutoring review by Kelsey in Boston, MA
The reading and language arts diagnostics revealed that her main issues were comma usage, using context clues to find definitions, author's purpose, and tone. There was a notable improvement in vocabulary, however. We reviewed each of the focus areas and completed practice problems for algebra and sequencing again (much improved since being able to plug the information into an equation). We also reviewed some vocabulary words. Finally, I gave a math diagnostic for her to complete, so I can score it and create the lesson for the next session. I will be picking up this diagnostic by Friday.
