Even though I am a Math major, writing and reading are some of my greatest strong-suits. For this reason, I enjoy teaching the SAT. Having mastery in all subjects is the key to having a good, well-balanced SAT score for applying to colleges.Every student, no matter what his or her struggles are, can be successful with school. I enjoy flying and am currently working on my PPL (Private Pilot's License) whenever I have the time. I graduated from Northern Arizona University with Bachelors of Science in Biology and Chemistry with departmental and liberal studies Honors. I am now pursuing graduate school with an emphasis on Behavior and Evolutionary Biology, and as such my favorite subjects to tutor are science related. I feel that success in a subject is directly related to an individuals interest in that subject, so my first goal is to always help a student discover what they think is interesting about the subject. Once an interest is formed, appreciation and understanding easily develop. My approach to tutoring subjects that center around problem solving, such as Chemistry and Physics, is to go over a variety of example problems and learn all the different methods to solving such problems. For subjects with more abstract concepts, such as Biology, Biochemistry, and other Life Science topics, my emphasis shifts towards understanding the broader picture. Outside of academia I spend a lot of time rock climbing, backpacking and doing whatever it takes to just be outdoors.

I am a graduate of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where I received my B.A. in History, and the University of Arizona, where I received my M.A. in European History. As part of my training I spent years studying both Latin and German; the latter was my main research language and as part of my undergraduate program I spent three months in Germany learning the language. As a teaching assistant during my graduate program, I led discussion sections for both a World History and a Western Civilization course. I was responsible for creating lesson plans and grading student performance. Having taught students with so many interests (I only ever taught one History major) and of such different backgrounds, I find the challenge of making History interesting and relevant to students a rewarding one. This includes not only making the material of History interesting, but in showing that History is more than simply the memorization of dates and names; I firmly believe that the study of History provides skills critical to a student's academic and personal growth. I enjoy reading, playing guitar and bass, and team sports, especially baseball.

I am currently a 4th grade teacher in Tucson. I have taught in 1st and 3rd also. I attended Carleton College, in Northfield, MN, where I graduated with a dual BA in Economics and Political Science. Carleton offered a strong program in liberal arts and I was exposed to subjects in all major academic fields. I further increased my knowledge by taking science courses at the University of Wisconsin in Oshkosh. I also studied economics at Cambridge University. Before moving to Arizona, I worked as a consult with Global Collect in San Francisco, where I gained experience in global economics and international payments, and have worked in multiple financial tech startups.I recently received my MA from the University of Arizona in Government and Public Policy. During my studies at Arizona, I presented lectures at several international conferences in political science and international relations. While attending graduate school at the University of Arizona, I worked as a teacher's assistant and was responsible for providing individual feedback to over 100 students. I found it rewarding to work with my students so they could achieve their maximum potential. Presently, I am working on some coding projects, primarily in the Ruby-on-Rails environment, a language that I am currently brushing up on.I believe in a collaborative approach to learning, working with students to inspire in them a genuine thirst for knowledge. I am a recent graduate with a Bachelors in Mathematics from the University of Arizona. I have always enjoyed the simplicity and structure of math. Solving a math problem is as satisfying as piecing together a puzzle. There are a million and one ways to solve it, but there is only one right answer. Solving a problem not only requires logic and patience, but creativity and curiosity. Students know all-too-well how easily their creativity and curiosity are crushed when dealing with a difficult math problem. When I see students getting frustrated with the rigidity of math, I try to help them relish in its systematic ways by using the tools that they already have. I have always pictured math as a toolbox. Each year in math, as students learn more concepts, they collect more tools to add to their own math toolbox. The more tools they collect, the easier it is for them to get the job done. Students can only use the tools, however, when they understand how they work. This is why building a solid foundation is so important. How can you solve integrals without geometry? How can you factor without understanding basic algebra? I push for complete comprehension of a topic, not just the knowledge required to complete an assignment. I want to help students build their own toolbox of math concepts with the confidence that they will be able to utilize it and add to it in future math courses.When I'm not working, I enjoy cooking, reading, knitting, skiing, gardening, and playing the piano.
