I have always enjoyed sharing knowledge with others and helping people learn to learn. Even as a young child, I loved seeing others transcend the limitations that once intimidated them, and that feeling continues to drive me today. I began tutoring in middle school when my grandmother, a retired second-grade teacher, found herself struggling to serve effectively as an algebra tutor. I put in an enthusiastic effort, and it worked out surprisingly well. Despite once “struggling in math” (this was the questionable word choice of his teachers), he eventually graduated college with a degree in mechanical engineering. Over the years, I have taught math, English, science, computer programming, and Latin. When I tutor, I am always careful to be empathetic, attentive, and flexible. I have found that communication is always improved by these habits, and I don't leave home without them. I believe I can teach any subject (even those with which I am not already familiar, given adequate time to prepare). I don't have a favorite subject to tutor; if I am able to help someone understand something that was previously incomprehensible, I'm happy. I have a degree in psychology from The Ohio State University, where I spent two years writing computerized tasks for the Clinical Neuroscience Laboratory. From my experiences working with young children as well as with older students, the most effective approach is striking the balance between structure/hard work and fun, as the second is often a motivator for the first. I like to laugh hard and often, and I like for my students to laugh as well!On a personal level, I love to have adventures. Anything I haven't done before is game I especially enjoy trying new restaurants and coffee shops with my friends. Besides eating my way through Richmond, I also go to a lot of concerts; I'll listen to anything, but I would say my musical roots are definitely of the rock variety! I'm a fan of sunshine, trampolines, and all things art. Finally, I love to travel, having recently returned from a gap year during which I traveled solo through the U.S. and parts of Latin America.

I have always had a passion for knowledge which has lead me to graduate with honor from the Michigan State University's Honors College with a Bachelor of Science in Zoology and spend the past two years working on a Master of Science degree in Evolution, Ecology and Organismal Biology at the Ohio State University. I'm a sophomore at Ohio State University pursuing a degree in economics, but my favorite subject to teach and tutor is math. Throughout high school and especially in my section of AP Calculus, I would tutor many of my peers. When I teach someone I think the most important thing is that he or she understands the material not just recognize a pattern of when to use what tools. I like to watch a student work through a problem, so I can see where they are having issues and then help them remove the "roadblocks" between them and the answer.

After taking some time off for family, I have returned to school and am currently working on completing a master's degree in Educational Psychology. I taught preschool for approximately two years in New York state. During this time, I learned how to Zoom and use Google Classroom to create lessons and work with students. Using these programs has helped me learn how to work with students online in an effective manner. I have spent the last year substitute teaching in various subjects from preschool through 8th grade. Substituting through so many grade levels has given me the opportunity to gain valuable teaching experience from varying perspectives. While I truly enjoy working with several age groups, I really enjoy working with preschool and elementary age students. I am confidant in most subjects, especially English. I have chosen teaching and tutoring because I enjoy helping people, especially children. Helping a student understand and learn the material is very satisfying.
