When I get a tutoree I become invested in their progress and academic success and never have a 'my-way-or-the-high-way' mentality, but am flexible to trying to find new ways of teaching for however a particular student learns. I think this flexibility and dedication to making school work as easy as possible for my students is my strongest attribute as a tutor.I am available to work up to thirty hours per week. Friday through Sunday I would generally be free to tutor at any time; on Mondays, I am available during the day, and on Wednesdays, I am available from mid-afternoon (starting around three) through the evening. I am usually not available on Tuesdays or Thursdays. I would not need to take any month off.

I graduated from Columbia University in 2011 with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering. I was always a straight-A student,\ but needed help when it came to standardized testing for college admission, especially the verbal sections. I attended two years of prep school and eventually obtained a 2200. My biggest takeaway was the way I learn and retain information. I believe what makes me unique as a teacher is that I take the time to understand the needs of my students, work with them to come with a learning strategy that works for them, and create a measurable objective to work towards. The most daunting goal can be obtained with the right planning and cooperation. By showing the students that I am willing to work hard, I believe it motivates them to try just as hard.

I received a Bachelor's degree in English with a secondary field (minor) in French at Harvard College. For my honors creative thesis in poetry, I wrote 52 original poems, centered on themes of transit, transience, nature, and urban life (particularly how these categories intersect). I also created and taught humanities courses to high school and middle school students through the Educational Studies Program at Harvard. Through this group, I co-founded ESProut, a program focused on bringing free after-school classes to under-resourced schools in the greater Somerville area, through which I taught French and poetry. Following graduation, I spent the school-year working as an English language teaching assistant at a high school in Bordeaux, France where I created lessons focusing on grammar, vocabulary, idiomatic speech, and culture. This past year, I received my master's in English at the University of Cambridge, writing a dissertation on trans-Atlantic/trans-cultural poetry with a focus on Walt Whitman, T.S. Eliot, and Jules Laforgue. Many summers have found me working as a residential assistant for Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth, where I often would run the ever popular Seuss & Silverstein appreciation session. My ultimate goal is to become a high school English teacher and I am interested in becoming involved in educational policy at the national level later on in my life. Teaching is a joy that has always rivaled the happiness I receive from reading a great poem or communicating in another language. English and French literature are the two great passions of my life, and it is when I'm teaching that I feel most like I am doing meaningful and rewarding work. When I'm not reading poetry or practicing my French, I like boogie-boarding (a recently acquired skill), hiking, baking (often French desserts), and knitting.

I will graduate from USC with honors in May, and although I am originally from the Midwest, I plan to stay in the Los Angeles area. My course background includes a full load of college-level premed courses (three years of biology, a full year of organic chemistry, biochemistry, etc.), and my favorite subjects are math, physiology, and writing.I love teaching! I am a registered college science tutor at USC, and I also teach younger students at a weekly Girl Scout program in Watts. In high school, I tutored for the SAT as well as teaching swimming lessons for over four years, so I am very confident in my ability to make complicated topics understandable. My favorite area is standardized testing. I love the look on a student's face when they realize that they don't have to be nervous about an exam - that it can actually be really fun if the questions are viewed as the simple patterns they really are.In my free time, I love watching movies, reading, swimming, and exploring the city. I also play in a weekly ice hockey league and lately have been busy with a new puppy!

While attending college I had the opportunity to work for the University's Learning Support Services as a tutor and mentor for my fellow students. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about Women's Studies, Sociology, Psychology, Writing, and Research. Few things are as rewarding to me as helping others to achieve their goals in and out of academia. I find that passing on healthy work and study skills provides the highest long-term success rate for my students, so they can continue being confident learners even when I am not aiding them. For my senior thesis, I wrote a 50-page epic poem that intertwined the geobiological evolution of the earth with my family history.I've been tutoring intermittently since my freshman year of high school--from one-on-one, subject-specific tutoring to coaching my high school speech team to teaching saxophone lessons at an arts center to leading writing workshops for disenfranchised boys at the Juvenile Detention Center near my university.I believe that anyone can learn anything as long they approach it from the ground up. As such, I strive to ensure students understand material at a foundational and conceptual level before advancing into specifics. Furthermore, I believe the learning process should be as exciting and collaborative as possible, and that each lesson should be tailored to a student's particular learning styles and needs.Bottom line, I love working with people and helping them grasp intimidating concepts. Eventually I got a teaching credential in science: biology because this was the subject closest to my B.A.I tutor all the natural sciences, as well as English/ESL. My favorite subjects to tutor will always be Italian, science, and writing. Italian is close to my heart because of the years I lived in Italy. But science is the most fun to tutor, because you will usually get to build things, or at least draw some cool diagrams.I also love to teach writing because it's so much fun to see the look on a student's face when he or she realizes how easy it is. I had an amazing English teacher in high school who taught me a few simple formulas for writing. His shortcuts got me through an A.P. History exam, and they helped me all the way through college. I can teach them to you in an hour.If you master a few rules and get enough practice, you can become a strong writer.How you learn is a very personal process. Everyone is unique, and everyone has a unique way of learning.One of the reasons I left my teaching position was frustration over the "one-size-fits-all" style that's forced on us in school.If you're seeking a tutor, you probably prefer not to learn through the single "listen and read" technique that is the basis of most of our educational system.
