I have just completed my sophomore year at the University of Michigan majoring in Mechanical Engineering. I have lived in Ann Arbor my entire life, graduating from Pioneer High School in 2018. During my senior year of high school, I was an after school tutor for elementary students and also was a part of the Trailblazers program, mentoring a child over the course of a school year. I am most passionate about Math and Physics, two subjects that are the building blocks of innovation in society. In my free time, I love both watching and playing sports, especially baseball and basketball.

The courses I focus on as a tutor are high school math courses and college business/economics. I believe that learning should be fun and provide lifelong enjoyment. I graduated from Greenwich Country Day, Choate, Brown (economics major), and Harvard Business School (MBA). Currently, I teach undergraduates and MBA candidates at Berkeley College and the University of Connecticut. The topics I have taught at the college and MBA levels include business decision-making, corporate finance, economics, financial institutions, financial markets, and investment management.

In sharing my qualifications and interests, I hope to provide you with tremendous confidence in my abilities to not only establish a strong rapport with you, but to also be an exceptional teacher in arithmetic, elementary math, middle school math, and pre-algebra!I currently have seven years of experience teaching upper elementary education. The last two years of my career were spent in Hong Kong at an international Christian school. During this time, I learned a lot about how to connect with a wide variety of students and learning styles. In 2007, I received my Bachelor's in Elementary Education at Missouri Western State University and, in 2010, I completed my Master's in Elementary Administration at William Woods University.I consider myself to be a creative individual, with a variety of interests including family, outdoors, and music. Almost every Sunday, my wife, my daughter, and I go to my parents' house to have lunch and spend time with my family. When I lived in Hong Kong, this was something that I really missed a lot! My interest in music is rooted in the fact that I was in band all through school and college. I can play the Euphonium, a little piano, guitar, harmonica, and the mandolin. And if you are wondering what kinds of things I like to do outdoors, it would most definitely be hiking and fishing! In fact, I almost wish I could be outdoors catching some fish right now!

I am extremely enthusiastic about my decision to read Mathematics at the university.I am going to complete my master degree in mathematics soon; Also I am working as a graduate teaching assistant in my university.

I am native of Chile where I attended a German school for 11 years.During this time I approved two exams in German, verbal and written, that were corrected and graded in Chile and Germany as well. In addition, I went to Germany for three months in a student exchange program. During this time, I lived with a host family and attended a German high school. My great grandparents had come to Chile from Germany; thus both my father and grandmother used to talk to me in German when I was growing up, in addition to my native language, Spanish.Once I moved to the USA, I won a scholarship from my German class in my senior year of high school. During college, I started tutoring students in German and Spanish as well, especially in grammar. At this point in time I realized I could help students in both of these languages. In addition I have taken Spanish grammar courses at Montclair State University, thanks to which I have been able to help my fellow classmates.Some of my hobbies are soccer, basketball, and hanging out with my friends. I am also a soccer referee, working in various youth, men's, and high school leagues. Also, my favorite soccer league to watch is the English Premier League, though in my country soccer is called “fútbol”.

I've been tutoring students for four years and look forward to tutoring new students with Varsity Tutors.Primarily, I work with students on SAT test prep and have seen students increase their SAT composite score by more than 350 points after working with me. I've also tutored students who were initially struggling in a variety of AP subjects and went on to earn 4s and 5s on their AP tests.Additionally, I teach debate and public speaking to 30-40 students each year (as part of a speech and debate institute that I own and teach at) and have spent countless hours understanding what strategies and techniques are required to be an effective teacher. I believe that after tutoring, coaching, and teaching for 4 years, I've learned a great deal not only about what I teach, but about how to teach. I'm very interested in pedagogy and am always asking myself "is this the most effective way to teach this subject or this concept," "what is the pedagogical merit in this approach," and "am I making sure that the student I'm tutoring isn't just hearing what I'm saying, but is understanding it as well?" I've had a significant amount of time to test out various teaching methods and learn what works for different types of students. I strongly believe that individualized tutoring strategies are needed for each students because there are many different types of learners.

I find that the best approach to interacting with students is to be friendly, open, and patient. We have all struggled in a subject at some point in our lives, and I hate to see students get flustered or embarrassed when they don't understand a concept. I'm upbeat and enjoy sharing my enthusiasm for what I have learned with the people that I meet. When I'm not working or in school, I enjoy reading, listening to music, or eating copious amounts of food.
