I am a former teacher for the NYCDOE and senior tutor for the Sylvan Learning Center. I believe learning should be fun. Students should understand that there is no shame in making mistakes. When we make mistakes, that is how we learn. Even teachers make mistakes. I have a great sense of humor, so I enjoy a little levity while we study, A sense of humor takes away the tension of learning, and also it makes a "boring" subject fun. Students should be encouraged to excel as high as they desire and I will be there to help them do it.

I am currently a PhD student at Syracuse University in the Special Education Department studying Disability Studies. I am dedicated to helping individuals capitalize on their strengths and figure out how to best navigate the system structures to maximize learning and possibilities for their future. I was a very non-traditional student my entire life and have learned different ways to work around that to navigate the system to get where I want to. I like to use creativity, problem solving, and knowledge of the educational system to support others. I enjoy working one-on-one with people as it allows for a very individualized approach to learning. Besides school and teaching I love the outdoors, mountains, nature, and animals. I believe in enjoying life, which also many times means finding the quickest and easiest paths to reach educational goals and being realistic in amount of time being spent studying.

I have experience as a reading and writing tutor from an elementary school to a graduate school level. I am an artist, mom, editorial professional, and tutor living in Brooklyn, NY.I graduated from Brooklyn College as a Magna Cum Laude with a double major in History and Political Science and a minor in Art (including Art History). I was passionate about the social sciences, seeking out additional coursework, as well as Comparative Literature and English courses. Later, I completed a pre-med curriculum (including Biology, Pre-Calculus, Physics, and two terms each of Introductory and Organic Chemistry). This led to one (unhappy) year at NYU Dental School.I have worked in publishing, as a proofreader, editorial assistant, production editor and computer graphic designer.Later, following time as a primary caregiver with my child, I became a per diem teacher. I developed an expertise and was sought out to help with my district's gifted program and filled in for maternity leaves with two 3rd grade classes. Helping students one-on-one was definitely my favorite part of teaching! I observed how, in the group environment of the classroom, a struggling student will float through the day. Given individual focus, he/she retained more material, creating important scaffolding in their efforts to catch up to current material.During this time, I also began to build my skills as an artist bolstered by select classes at several NYC-area art schools, and a scholarship/residency with the Manhattan Graphics Center. This is largely a "gifted’ group" and my work with them focuses on homework and enrichment, with some in-depth tutoring for students with specific issues. I’ve introduced the children to origami, and it’s been very exciting to aid and observe their development. We also create pop-up cutouts, paint and draw from observation, and build sculptural objects using clay and popsicle sticks.In addition to art, my interests include exercise, reading, and spending time with family and friends.
