Frequently Asked Questions
AP Environmental Science (APES) is a college-level course that explores ecosystems, human populations, energy flow, and environmental issues. Many 9th graders take it to get ahead on AP credits, explore environmental careers, or challenge themselves with rigorous science coursework. The course combines biology, chemistry, geology, and ecology, making it ideal for students interested in sustainability, conservation, or environmental policy.
The course covers eight main units: energy flow and primary productivity, population ecology, human populations, global water systems and pollution, soil and agriculture, biodiversity and ecosystems, atmospheric systems, and human impacts on the environment. Each unit combines foundational concepts with real-world applications, so students learn both the science and how it connects to current environmental challenges.
The main struggles are balancing quantitative problem-solving (graphs, calculations, data analysis) with conceptual understanding, and connecting abstract ecological principles to real-world scenarios. Many students also find the breadth of content overwhelming—the course touches on biology, chemistry, and earth science all at once. Additionally, the AP exam requires strong reading comprehension and the ability to apply concepts to unfamiliar situations, which takes targeted practice.
Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors who can break down complex ecological concepts, help you master quantitative skills like calculating population growth rates or energy efficiency, and build your confidence with practice questions and exam-style problems. A tutor can also identify which units you find most challenging and create a personalized study plan to strengthen weak areas before the AP exam in May.
Starting tutoring in the fall or early winter gives you plenty of time to master concepts, work through practice problems, and take full-length practice exams before May. If you're starting later in the year, focused tutoring on your weakest units and intensive practice testing can still make a real difference. Many students benefit from ramping up sessions in April and May for final review and test-taking strategy.
Practice tests are crucial—they help you get comfortable with the exam format (multiple choice and free response), identify content gaps, and build your pacing and time management skills. The AP APES exam has 80 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes and three free-response questions in 90 minutes, so practicing under timed conditions is essential. Tutors often use practice tests diagnostically to pinpoint exactly which topics need more work.
Your first session typically includes an assessment of your current understanding—which units feel solid and which are confusing—plus a conversation about your goals (improving your grade, aiming for a 4 or 5 on the exam, or building confidence). From there, your tutor creates a personalized plan, often starting with foundational concepts or your most pressing weak area, and establishes a regular schedule that works for you.
Madison's 6 school districts and 87 schools offer strong science programs and many have AP coordinators who can provide exam information and deadlines. The University of Wisconsin–Madison also has environmental science programs and resources that can deepen your understanding of real-world applications. Combining school resources with personalized tutoring gives you the best chance to excel both in class and on the AP exam.
