I am a senior at Virginia Commonwealth University. I am working towards a BFA in Dance and Choreography with minors in Political Science and Psychology. I have served as a TA for a freshman honors writing course at VCU since Fall 2018. I have also assisted and taught children's dance classes. I enjoy babysitting and helping my younger sister with her homework. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about Math, Science, and Psychology. I am also happy to help students prepare for Standardized Tests, particularly with the math portions of the exams. I have always felt respect and admiration towards my teachers in both smaller and more grand situations who have shaped me into the lifelong learner that I am. As a tutor, my goal is to make good on this foundation and show students the same courtesy my teachers have shown me.

I am currently studying English literature and secondary education at Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina. I love Game of Thrones, Warhammer, and YouTube channels about world travel and languages. I am currently learning Spanish and Arabic, and I hope to be fluent in both someday. My biggest bucket list item is to travel to Bolivia and see the Salar de Uyuni. I have had extensive experience as a tutor of all ages, from helping kindergarteners learn to read and write English to working with adult students on their term papers for college. I am available to tutor reading, writing, basic Spanish, SAT/ACT prep, algebra, geometry, and study skills. As your tutor, my goal is to provide you with the tools to catch your own mistakes rather than just correcting them myself. I want to help you grow as a learner so you can use your own strengths to master the material.
I love math and physics, particularly as it relates to geology. Ask me about rocks in my spare time! Also a casual American history and constitutional/political buff. APUSH Text: Henrietta Calculus Text: Stewart Physics Text: Knight
I am not tutoring or working, I spend my spare time swimming, watching sports, basketball or football, and cooking. I look forward to working with you!
I am a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley and Duke University. I received my Bachelor's degree in History and my Master's degree in Religious Studies. Since graduation I have tutored students in American History and Biblical Hebrew, which were exceedingly rewarding experiences. I am especially passionate in helping students learn to think critically, and enjoy the process of learning. While I tutor a variety of subjects, I am most enthusiastic about tutoring in History and Writing because these subjects utilize skills that students will use and cultivate throughout their lives and are applicable for many careers. I would describe my teaching philosophy as hands on and project-based learning. I strive to include fun and relevant videos, songs, and activities into my curriculum to ensure the engagement of my students. Outside of academia I like painting, baking, hiking, photography, and having game nights with friends.
I am graduate from UNC Chapel Hill where I obtained a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. I am also a member of Mensa and enjoy exercising and playing basketball or tennis in my free time.
I am so excited to help you work through your learning journey! I promise you're smarter than you think. Let's figure this out together!
I am comfortable teaching almost all high school math subjects.
I am a second-year college student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I have previous tutoring experience and I have learned numerous skills and techniques that will help you grow as a student. Outside of school and studying, I enjoy playing sports, such as soccer, tennis, and basketball.
I am originally from Milford Pennsylvania, but currently resided in the research triangle of North Carolina. I attended Boston College for my undergraduate education, majoring in Biochemistry and minoring in Medical Humanities. I attend Tufts University School of Medicine for my M.S. in Biomedical Sciences. Next year I will pursue my PhD at Duke University. I love helping tutor and work with students of all ages, helping them to improve their understanding of material and their grades/scores. I hope we can work together to help you achieve your goals.
I'm not tutoring or buried in my textbooks, you will either find me rock climbing at the Triangle Rock Club, playing Ultimate Frisbee, working on my car, or enjoying the great outdoors (beaches, mountains, forests--you name it, I love it). On rainy weekends I enjoy tinkering with computers and old electronics, playing Pokemon, or picking at my guitar.
I am passionate about biomedical engineering, and am endlessly amazed by intricacies of the world around us. My degrees are in engineering (BS-General Engineering from Harvey Mudd, MS- Mechanical Engineering, and PhD-Bioengineering from Georgia Tech), but I also love art and literature and linguistics. Outside of academics, I am an avid sports fan (and rugby player) and I love to cook, hike with my dog, and travel.
Simon's 1590 SAT means he's operated at the ceiling of the test the PSAT directly mirrors — but what sets him apart is the breadth behind that score. His International Relations and Environmental Studies degrees built the kind of cross-disciplinary reading stamina that the Evidence-Based Reading section rewards, while his quantitative reasoning chops keep the algebra and data-analysis questions routine. Rated 5.0 by students.
I am a current senior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I am completing a degree in Health Policy and Management with minors in chemistry and biology. Currently, I am on the pre-medical track at UNC I am applying to medical schools for next year. I have worked as a tutor at the UNC Learning Center for two semesters and I have been a TA for anatomy and physiology for three semesters (two of those as lead TA).
I am a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I'm studying Economics and Computer Science, and in my free time I love playing piano, baking lemon bars, and drawing.
Scoring a 1550 on the SAT means Sophia already dominated the skills the PSAT tests — evidence-based reading, command of evidence questions, and the no-calculator math section that trips up so many sophomores and juniors. As a National Merit Scholar, she went through the exact PSAT-to-NMSQT pipeline and knows which score thresholds matter for semifinalist cutoffs in competitive states like Massachusetts. She breaks the test into targetable chunks so students can focus their prep time where it actually moves their Selection Index.
I'm graduating from medical school at Duke University this summer and finally have quite a bit of flexible time to tutor, something I really enjoyed doing all throughout college.
I am always excited to help students learn. I would characterize myself as patient and understanding, and aim to help students understand processes rather than just find answers.
I am currently a grad student in NC State's School of Education. I love education and working with folks of all ages to learn. I've been tutoring in some capacity for over 15 years. At first, I primarily taught swim lessons, and then, overtime, I branched out to a myriad of subjects from rock climbing to essay writing and test prep. These days I focus on literacy, organization/executive function skills, test prep, and writing.
I am a graduate of UNC Chapel Hill and an incoming student at Duke Law School who provides tutoring sessions to help students prepare for their SATs. I have experience as a substitute teacher and come from an academic background which has cultivated a passion for educating and helping others succeed. I emphasize practicing SAT test-taking techniques which can help students improve their scores.
I am Abir, a freshman at UNC. I am double majoring in biochemistry and neuroscience with a planned minor in mathematics. My dream is to attend medical school and become a surgeon. As a recent high school graduate, I know all too well the struggles and stresses of being a high-achieving student aiming for the very best college acceptances. It is because I know this feeling so well that I want to help in any way I can.
Scoring a 1560 on the SAT means Callie already knew the test inside out before the stakes were highest — and the PSAT uses the same format, passage types, and math concepts at a slightly lower difficulty tier. She breaks down the Evidence-Based Reading paired-passage questions and the no-calculator math section so students build real confidence before test day, not just familiarity. Rated 4.7 by past students.
I am a freshman at Vanderbilt University currently pursuing a B.S. in Biochemistry. My inquisitive nature has fostered a love for mathematics, the natural sciences, and how they interact to produce the world we experience every day. This extends to my teaching strategy, where I emphasize the importance of conceptual understanding rather than pure memorization of equations and steps. My recent experience in a wide variety of Advanced Placement courses lends me insight to recent changes in course objectives and exam formatting.
I am a rising junior at Duke University. I hail from Cleveland, Ohio (Go Cavs!), and I'm currently studying medical sociology, with the intent of going to medical school.
I'm a current junior at the College of William and Mary majoring in French and Francophone Studies and Linguistics. I have a history of high achievement and lots of on-the-job experience tutoring and teaching young people. My areas of expertise are French, Latin, linguistics, and English/language arts. I'm very excited and privileged to help unlock students' potentials to achieve!
I am a graduate of the University of California - Berkeley where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Data Science. Throughout college, I have volunteered with numerous education equity organizations dedicated to helping children from challenging socioeconomic backgrounds thrive in school; taught Reading to students K-8, taught for a summer enrichment program , and worked as a group tutor for data science at university. Whether it is working with younger students build their foundations or helping older students advance in core subjects, I have a passion for education and making learning as fun and accessible as possible! Outside of tutoring, I work as an economic researcher in the public sector and volunteer at environmental oriented non-profits.
Scoring a 1470 on the SAT means Wallis already knows the PSAT inside and out — the two tests share the same structure, question types, and scoring logic. Her writing center background at Sewanee gives her a particular edge on the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing sections, where she teaches students to spot rhetorical patterns and eliminate trap answers quickly. She also tackles the math portion with a focus on translating word problems into solvable equations.
I am a freshman at the University of Pittsburgh looking to pursue the pre-med track as a Neuroscience major. In my free time, I enjoy playing tennis, playing the piano, writing, reading, listening to music, etc.
I am an English major from Emory University, which I attended on a merit-based scholarship. I have been tutoring SAT or ACT prep and other high school subjects for the past 15 years in Asheville, Atlanta, and Miami, and honed my techniques with several excellent organizations before joining Varsity Tutors for their Atlanta launch.
As a dedicated tutor who is currently a Political Science and Public Policy student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, I am passionate about fostering a love for learning in my students. I specialize in ACT and SAT preparation, AP Literature and Language courses, and any other English or writing related subjects! My teaching philosophy centers on creating a supportive environment where students feel encouraged to express themselves and engage with the material. I strive to tailor my approach to each individual learner, ensuring that they not only grasp the concepts but also gain confidence in their abilities. Outside of tutoring, I enjoy reading literature and exploring new ideas, which I believe enriches my teaching and inspires my students.
I am pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and a Bachelor of Arts in Physics. I primarily tutor physics and math subjects. I especially love tutoring physics because it is an opportunity to make sense of the physical world surrounding us through mathematical relationships. Many students have difficulty with physics at first because it introduces new methods of thinking, so I love trying to help students reach that "click" moment where everything comes together. The actual calculations of physics problems may be daunting, but I aim to strengthen fundamental concepts during my tutoring sessions so that students feel confident to tackle difficult problems on AP and other standardized tests. Outside of my academic pursuits, I love music production, sound design, and song writing.
I am dedicated to meeting students where they are in order to find the best path forward.
I am currently a student at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill pursuing a degree in Computer Science. I not only am incredibly passionate about programming and computer science, but about math and learning in general. I have experience teaching people young and old about computers and the way the work in depth. I love meeting new people and finding out the way they think so I can better serve them as a teacher.
I am currently a graduate student at Texas State University, pursuing a specialist degree in School Psychology. A major deciding factor in my career choice was the field's emphasis on helping all students do their best at school and at home, which directly applies to my approach to tutoring. I love to learn and I love helping others feel successful in their classes. I have been informally tutoring peers and my younger siblings from a young age, and continue to do so today.
My name is Ananya, and I am a recent graduate of Georgetown University, where I obtained a B.S. in Mathematics and a B.A. in Government, graduating with Honors. In college, my favorite areas of math were calculus, linear algebra, and data science, which led me to conduct math statistics research for two years. I am an incoming Master's student at Cambridge University, where I will be studying and researching Digital Policy. My interdisciplinary educational experience informs my creative and engaging approach to education. I have many years of teaching experience throughout high school, I tutored elementary and middle school math and English in both paid and volunteer positions, and served as a TA for Precalculus and AP US History. In college, I served as a leader for multiple mentorship programs for high schoolers and incoming college students. These experiences taught me patience and the ability to adapt learning experiences to individual students' strengths. I take a reflective and iterative approach to tutoring, with practice, feedback, and application of material in various contexts. As your tutor, I am passionate about fostering a deeper understanding of material that will lead to your success, while embedding fun into the process. Please consider booking a lesson, and I look forward to getting started!
I'm a Sophomore at UNC Chapel Hill studying Economics and Biostatistics. I'm really excited to help students get an extra edge in their studies. I've had some math and language tutoring experience at my local Chinese school and math and public speaking coaching experience in high school. I tutor a wide variety of subjects in science, english, and math, as well as public speaking. I especially enjoy tutoring public speaking and math. I'm a versatile tutor who doesn't hesitate to use every resource available. My hobbies are reading, running, and playing PC games. I'm looking forward to giving you an extra edge in your studies!
I am open to helping any student of any age with nearly any subject (math, reading, writing, biology, chemistry, economics, civics, Spanish etc). I'm also happy to help with test prep (hello SAT and ACT takers), as well as college application assistance. I'm a strong believer in a patient, non-judgmental, non-intimidating approach to tutoring, and I really try to prioritize the comfort of my students. As someone who has used tutoring myself in some of my harder classes in college, I understand that not everything comes easily to everyone, so I want all of my students to feel comfortable asking any and all questions they might have, or going over a topic as many times as needed to understand it. I'm all about friendly, humble service!
I'm a rising junior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I was born and raised in Charlotte, NC, and I love helping others understand new subjects.
I am a senior Public Policy major at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a minor in Southern Studies and History. I will be attending law school next fall. I tutor the LSAT, English, general essay writing and composition, American history, music theory, economics, statistics, and more. In my free time, I'm reading a book, playing the piano, or watching college basketball.
Tutoring writing at Boston Latin taught Lexy how to use Socratic questioning to pull ideas out of students who freeze up on timed prompts — a technique that transfers directly to the PSAT's Evidence-Based Writing and Language section, where students need to evaluate sentence structure and argument flow under pressure. Her 1570 SAT and 34 ACT mean she's navigated both major test architectures, and her English degree keeps her sharp on the passage-analysis skills that drive the reading section.

Frequently Asked Questions
The PSAT is a standardized test that measures reading, writing, and math skills—essentially a practice run for the SAT. For students in Raleigh, it's more than just a warm-up: your PSAT score determines eligibility for National Merit Scholarship recognition, which can open doors to significant college funding opportunities. Taking it seriously in 10th or 11th grade gives you valuable insight into your strengths and weaknesses before the actual SAT.
Score improvement depends on your starting point and how focused your preparation is. Most students see meaningful gains—typically 50-100 points—when they work with a tutor to identify weak areas, learn test-specific strategies, and practice consistently. Research on 1-on-1 instruction shows that personalized feedback and targeted practice are among the most effective ways to boost test performance. The key is starting early enough to allow time for skill-building and practice test cycles.
Reading and Writing often challenge students more than Math because they require strong vocabulary, quick comprehension, and test-specific strategies that aren't always taught in regular classes. Math struggles tend to be about pacing and question format—students know the concepts but run out of time or misunderstand what the question is asking. A tutor can help you identify which sections are your personal weak spots and develop targeted strategies to address them, whether that's building reading speed, strengthening grammar foundations, or improving problem-solving efficiency.
Ideally, 8-12 weeks of consistent preparation gives you enough time to learn strategies, take multiple practice tests, and refine your approach. If you're starting closer to test day, even 4-6 weeks of focused tutoring can help you identify and address your biggest weak areas. The frequency matters too—most students benefit from weekly sessions combined with independent practice between meetings. Varsity Tutors can connect you with tutors who can create a personalized timeline based on your current level and goals.
Practice tests do two critical things: they help you get comfortable with the test format, timing, and question types, and they reveal exactly which skills need work. Taking a practice test early shows your baseline, then you can focus tutoring sessions on addressing specific gaps. After learning strategies, taking another practice test shows whether they're actually working. This cycle of test, learn, practice, test again is one of the most proven methods for improving standardized test scores.
Test anxiety often stems from uncertainty—not knowing what to expect, feeling unprepared, or lacking a clear strategy. Working with a tutor builds confidence by familiarizing you with every aspect of the test, teaching you time-management techniques, and giving you multiple opportunities to practice under realistic conditions. When you've seen similar questions before and have a solid plan for tackling them, the actual test day feels much less intimidating. Tutors can also teach specific anxiety-management techniques like pacing strategies and mindset approaches that help you stay calm and focused.
Look for tutors who specialize in test prep and understand the PSAT's specific format and scoring. Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors in Raleigh who have experience helping students improve their PSAT scores and qualify for National Merit recognition. When you get matched with a tutor, ask about their approach to identifying weak areas, how they structure practice tests, and what improvement you can realistically expect based on your starting point.
Your PSAT score in 11th grade determines whether you qualify as a National Merit Finalist, which can lead to significant scholarship opportunities and recognition from colleges. The cutoff score varies by state, but in North Carolina it's typically competitive—making strong preparation worthwhile if you're aiming for this distinction. Many students in Raleigh work with tutors specifically to push their score into National Merit range, since the benefits extend well beyond the test itself.
