I am a former professor in human, physical, and environmental geographies. I have a background in geology and marine science, communications, as well as a doctorate in geography. I have taught a wide range of subjects including chemistry, physical geography, human geography (and labs), marine geography, environmental science, Caribbean geography, globalization, political ecology, writing for the sciences, writing and research, and communication. I enjoy teaching a variety of subjects and like to discover ways to personalize lessons. My first focus is to build trust and communication with the student, and give them the skills to feel independent and sure of how to succeed in the desired subject area. I tend to apply alternative methods that encourage open communication, and interactive engagement (versus "top down" teaching strategies). I believe strongly in self-assessment and giving the student the ability not only to find their strengths, but also their weaknesses and give them the skills to overcome those challenges through attainable milestones. I have fostered and tutored three nieces into advanced programs and honor rolls in their schools through my method of engaging their skills with real world applications, and showing them how all of these skills are used in our society in various ways. This provides motivation and purpose and takes the subject from one of "a required knowledge" to one that they see as valuable and worth investing their time with. I love the outdoors and used to be a kitesurfing instructor as well.

I believe education can be fun. The challenge is to work at an individual at his or her level. I do not talk down to students. I am dedicated to working with students until they have the "aha' moment!

I am a hard-working student in college and also a mom of 3. I am also in school at Grand Canyon University my degree is a dual degree in Elementary Education and Special Education. I currently work as a teacher assistant in a middle school and love it! I love learning and love to help my students out so much! I am very passionate about teaching. My favorite subjects to tutor would probably be science or history. Although I am strong in everything that I teach.

I'm a biology major with hopes to attend veterinary school in the near future to pursue large animal surgery.

I am a graduate of the University of North Carolina Wilmington. I received my Bachelor of Science in Biology and will matriculate into the MD program Class of 2020 at Eastern Virginia Medical School in the fall. I began my tutoring career as a Supplemental Instruction Leader for Microbiology of Human Disease for four semesters and Chemistry 101 for two semesters while in undergrad. These are peer-facilitated group review sessions designed to help students succeed in historically difficult courses. I would meet with the students of each of these courses to review lecture materials, supplemental materials that I could provide, and review for tests. In my time as an SI leader, I learned I have a talent for presenting difficult information in an easy to understand fashion. I have a passion for helping students that are struggling in these courses, and try to present the topics they go over in a way that they can relate. With partial responsibility of a student's education in my hands, I strive to exceed the expectations of my job description and not only review material and answer questions, but I also take time to prepare supplemental materials such as charts, graphs, quizzes, and other organizational materials for their notes.

I am a second grade teacher in the Virginia Beach public school system. I have been teaching for 11 years, all of which have been in Virginia Beach. I have spent most of my time teaching 2nd grade, but I have also taught 4th and 5th grade. I grew up knowing I wanted to be a teacher and spent my high school and college years volunteering with different children's programs, primarily in my church. I am a Senior at Virginia Commonwealth University, studying biology and looking to apply to medical school. I have had a variety of different teaching experiences including working as a teaching assistant for biology and organic chemistry at the university level. In addition to the sciences, I am comfortable tutoring for standardized exams including the SAT, ACT, Advanced Placement Exams, and the MCAT. When tutoring, I seek to ensure an in-depth understanding of the material, both at a conceptual and detail-oriented level. I was a teacher for 13.5 years, teaching grades 5-12. I have loved it, but I needed a change of scenery, so I left to pursue another career. However, I feel that I am not finished teaching completely and I hope to have a positive impact on students by tutoring them when they are struggling. I know learning another language is challenging, but it can also be so much fun and can open up so many doors for a student!In my spare time, I love to travel (either long or short trips), read , work out, cook, and spend time with family and friend.
