Session Summaries by SAT Math Tutors

Atlanta, GA SAT Math tutoring
The student is continuing to do well on her weekly practice tests. We went over some math problems, and then reviewed her essay together. She is still feeling confident with the material. I had prepared two sets of math questions targeted to her, and I had her do both so we could review them. She is getting better at recognizing how to deal with them and we decided to come up with more review on combinations and circle geometry. She also did another math section from her book and wrote an essay outline so that we could talk about her organization. Overall, we both feel like she is doing well and will be very ready to face the exam in a few weeks.

The student had completed 2 more math sections of his practice test for today's session. We went over the questions, focusing especially on student-produced answers. The student has really gotten the hang of geometry and calculating angles, but sometimes struggles a bit with geometry on the plane and writing equations based on the information given. We reviewed the importance of reading the whole question carefully and focusing on what we know and what the question is. In addition, we identified some gaps in knowledge, such as the distance formula. For our next session, I asked him to complete a full practice test in one sitting.

Today, we started off with details on the SAT test and then exhausted the geometry topics. We reviewed planar and solid geometry, and then went on to linear functions and the concepts of perpendicular and parallel lines and how they relate to slope.

The student continues to steadily improve as we get even closer to the exam date. Upon reviewing his assigned work together, it was clear that he is very solid on the easy and medium difficulty questions. I showed him how to complete these problems and gave similar examples he could try on his own to check his understanding, such as problems involving averages and graph transformations. I assigned 3 more sections for him to complete for homework. Again, these should be taken in a timed test-like environment.

I met with the student for the first time today at a coffee house. As mentioned in the student profile, the first time she took the SAT back in June she scored a 400 in the math section. We focused solely on the math section since her verbal/writing scores are much higher. Her target score is a 500-550 for the SAT this Saturday. We worked on some math section practice tests using her prep book. I made it a point not to time her this session so we had ample space to walk through each question and write down our work-through/thought process to solve each problem. She said that the types of math problem she struggles with the most are the graph/slope/intercept questions as well as spatial visualization questions and numerical sequence questions. I suggested that an easy way to improve her score in a short span of time (we only have 2 other sessions to meet before she takes the test on Saturday) is to focus on the easy and medium difficulty questions and not even to attempt the hard questions at the end. Writing down equations/variables is key to unlocking the problem and will cut down on errors. I also reviewed the order of operations with her (PEMDAS - Parentheses/Exponents/Multiplication/Division/Addition/Subtraction) when we solved algebra equations. We reviewed the answers and corrected some mistakes. We also started working on a new math section practice test before our class ended.

We continued to work in the SAT book and finished section 6. I recommended that the student try to study about an hour a day and that some good supplemental material might be an online SAT prep guide.
