I graduated with a PhD at Freiburg University, in Germany, in 2021. I am a cultural anthropologist by trade, but have more than five years of experience teaching a wide arrange of topics in the social sciences and language studies. I have taught and tutored students in countries like Colombia, Mexico, Germany, Canada and the United States, but I have been able to travel and engage with learners with an even wider arrange of culturally diverse backgrounds. I myself am Colombian, bilingual, and a believer in an approach to teaching that prioritizes informed conversation and dialogue, while encouraging critical thinking and gaining skills that will be useful in futural professional and academic fields.

I am a former medical student with two years of experience under my belt and a Bachelor's in Biology. I am currently working for a tech giant. I have years of tutoring STEM subjects and being a mentor for undergraduate students in Upstate New York. The world of science and how the human body interacts with its surroundings fascinates me! Therefore, it is no surprise I enjoy tutoring Anatomy and Microbiology up to the college level. I also enjoy teaching high school and lower level sciences . My method is simple, we learn together and use tools that best work for you (visual or auditory). I'll try to spark an interest in your learning capabilities and facilitate every step of the way. The goal is to make you an independent learner.

Aloha. I am from Honolulu, Hawai'i and I've recently moved to Albany, New York to study speech-language pathology. My undergraduate degree in early and elementary education has prepared me for one-to-one tutoring with children from ages 3-12 and I have a deep passion in education and child development. I have an extensive amount of experience working with children of all ages and I particularly enjoy grades 2-5. A part of my passion for education deals with my love for children and I plan to be a pediatric speech therapist upon receiving my Master's degree in May 2019. I enjoy being active and outdoors for the most part but I also believe that down time and personal wellness is very important!

I am a creative and enthusiastic teacher who is committed to bringing out the best in each of my students. With a passion for helping my students learn and grow, I come to each session prepared to make a difference. However, I also know that learning is not something that I, alone, control. Learning is a cooperative venture and students learn best when we work within their preferred learning styles, using a context that is relevant and interesting to them. The goal is not just to make a difference today, but to help instill and develop skills and values that will enable each student to become a motivated and life-long learner. As a tutor, I believe that it is my job to help identify my students' strengths and areas of challenge. Often students can't identify what they do understand and what they aren't able to comprehend, and they can get mired down in frustration and discouragement. I see myself as a solid support person, always on my student's side; someone who sees the good and possibility when the student might not be able to see his or her own successes. As an avid communicator, writer and storyteller, I bring my love of the dramatic to my sessions, continually looking for ways to excite and interest my students. I am both patient and persevering, and am willing to set boundaries when needed. My goal is to see each of my students succeed to the best of his or her own ability and to gain in confidence as well as skill.

I have always enjoyed working with students in various capacities. Currently, I am a teaching assistant at the University at Albany and before that, I worked with younger children struggling in math and science. I enjoy connecting with students to help find a way for them to not only understand the material, but to be able to use that material and apply it to their learning for years to come. It is important to me that each student makes academic goals and that I help achieve those goals so that every student feels successful and well equipped to handle material on their own. I think that it is crucial that students also learn what resources they have available to them when a tutor or teacher is not available, and how to employ those resources. I think it is vital that I help students figure out the best way for them to learn. Every individual is different and I see it as my role to teach study skills that can be accessed during the entirety of a students academic career.

In grade school, I wanted to be a history teacher. I looked up to my history teachers in high school and I realized that I had a skill for teaching. During high school, I tutored in history, biology, English and writing. I understood the different ways that students can learn whether that be visually, physically, verbally, logically, or socially. I tried to use real life examples and help my students learn the best way they know how to learn. I was patient with them and I took time to figure out their personalities in order to assess how to help them learn more efficiently. I think tutoring is more than trying to help a student pass a class or do some homework; its trying to teach them how to learn better in anything they take on. Later on, I volunteered at a elementary school with a professional company which helped kids catch up to their reading level and that gave more a guideline on how to create a lesson plan for children with learning disabilities. Recently, I volunteered at a high school to help young girls better themselves in all their subjects.
