My name is Drew Andersen and I am a freshman studying Physics and Mathematics at Occidental College in Pasadena, California. I have been tutoring high school students in mathematics and science for the past 3 years. While my methods in teaching rely on a few fundamental principles, I realize that each student I come into contact with learns in very different ways. I believe I am a good fit for your student not because of my knowledge in specific subjects, but my ability to cater to each student's individual learning strengths - creating a work environment in which your student is not only comfortable, but one in which they thrive.

I graduated from UCLA after studying Sociology and Government. After working briefly in politics, I decided to go into education, and since then I have spent time working in a charter school, as a private English tutor in Madrid, and with both private and non-profit academic support and enrichment programs. Over the years I've taught just about every subject. I love helping students develop a positive, can-do attitude in relation to subjects that used to make them feel anxious and confused. (In my experience this is often math or standardized tests, but I also love to tutor writing and general study skills.) In my spare time I enjoy playing soccer, video games, and always learning something new!

I received my Bachelors Degree in 2012 from Thomas Aquinas College, double majoring in philosophy and theology, with a minor in math. I then went on to receive my Master's of Science in Business Analysis in 2013 from Catholic University of America. Since graduation, I have worked for environmental non-profits, helping plant trees across the world, and for consulting firms, helping to mitigate risk in user processes and IT risk analysis. While I tutor in a broad range of subjects, my personal favorites are history, literature, algebra, and philosophy.My approach is focused on two things: perspective and passion. I genuinely believe that learning is one of the greatest gifts society can give us today, and one of the best things we can pursue for ourselves. All knowledge is connected, and rather than approaching a subject as simply that subject by itself, everything we learn opens new doors for our minds, and into subjects we sometimes never knew about or never believed to be as intertwined. For example: is it simply coincidence that the studies of astronomy and philosophy tend to happen at the same time for early cultures? Or that early arithmetical and geometrical proofs were found to exist in natural formations? I find that once connections and insights like the previous occur with the learner, passion begins to grow, and education no longer becomes a requirement, but a self-employed pursuit.In my spare time, I love expanding my knowledge of different artists in many different genres, always looking for my new favorite. I also enjoy spending time with friends and family, recreational reading, playing board games and video games, and watching NFL games with my dad.

I received my bachelor degree in statistics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign this year. With a solid foundation of statistics, Id like to help more students to improve their grades and find their own way of tackling the subject. I'd like to share my learning tips I got when I was a student. Besides statistics, I am also interested in tutoring algebra and calculus. I like to encourage students to ask questions to ensure they completely understand the content and could apply to new problems. The sudden moment when the students understand something they've been struggling with is the truly rewarding to me.Outside of tutoring, I like to watch movies, anime and listen to indie music.

My favorite subject is Statistics, as it has several practical uses that I apply in my life nearly every day. I start by getting to know a student and observing how their mind works. I constantly ask questions to make sure their train of thought is correct as giving a direct shortcut to the right answer does not help them to deeply understand the material and prepare themselves for any type of problem. Every time I am told I have changed the way someone thinks and helped their understanding it is a personal victory for me. When I am not teaching, I am working on my own side projects or playing tactical games.

In between studies, I began my experience as a tutor for the "No Child Left Behind" program tutoring students K-8 in Reading and Language Arts in order to help them improve study habits and standardized test scores in a one-on-one setting.Upon entering graduate school at Chapman University, I began working as an English tutor for the writing center on campus. I worked one-on-one with undergraduates and graduate students of various majors in order to ensure their writing assignments (short and long papers, theses, resumes, and personal statements) were following the given prompts.I tutor any category related to the field of EnglishReading, Writing (both academic and creative), Literature, and Language Arts. My favorite subject to tutor is writing because my belief, from personal experience, is that fostering a strong and confident authorial voice is of the utmost importance for a student and it becomes applicable to all career choices one might make. My expertise lies in teaching math and biology. I am currently in my third-year of dental school and will graduate as a dentist in 2017. My undergraduate degree focused on human biology.

I recently received a Masters in Psychology from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. During my time in the program, I was a TA for courses in Statistics and Psychology. Currently, I am attending Palo Alto University to obtain a PhD in Clinical Psychology. During my time off from classes, I will be available to tutor several subjects both in-person in the Bay Area as well as online. I will gladly tutor students of any age. While I am proficient in all subjects listed on my profile, I am best at tutoring in Statistics and Psychology.
