At this session, the student and I continued discussing "The Grimm Legacy". We reviewed what had happened last in the book and we read together a few sections. The student was able to summarize what had happened in the sections we read, and we discussed further details.

We covered sight words and reading concepts during this session. We started off reviewing sight words that the student has been successful with and then we learned 3 new words. We practiced using the word in a sentence and did an activity called Say, Build, Write to reinforce memorizing the sight words. The student read a level E book with over 90% accuracy putting her in the independent range for that level. She used a lot of details with retelling when the book was provided. I left activities for her to practice her sight words and books for her to read until we meet for our next tutoring session.

The student and I started the session with tracing letters. Because she prefers being directive rather than being directed, I had her play tutor and myself play student. This unique experience showed me what she already knew and could teach to someone else, and where her skills could be built. She tends to mix up big G and little e and writes letters backwards at times. She earned stickers for listening to directions after her role as tutor ended.

We discussed the end of the book "Unwind," by Neal Shusterman. We completed our graphic organizers about the characters of the book, and I gave the student a writing assignment where he will use the characters to make an argument about the main conflict in the plot of the book. He will continue working on the writing assignment for our next meeting.

It was nice to have an extra session with the student so we could work on more than just trying to do well on her spelling test. We went through a lesson and focused on multi-syllable words. She learned about open and closed syllables and was able to use the information to build words. We also read a book and wrote sentences using her spelling words.
