How can a tutor help you master the ACT?

The American College Testing (ACT) exam is used by many universities and colleges as a factor in the undergraduate admissions process. As such, it is an important test to perform well on for students who are in the process of applying to college. The ACT takes a total of three and a half hours to complete and is made up of five sections. These include English, math, reading, science, and writing. The English section consists of questions based on grammar and usage, sentence structure, punctuation, organization, and style. The math section involves pre-algebra, algebra, coordinate geometry, plane geometry, and trigonometry. The reading section measures your reading comprehension ability. The science section requires you to interpret, analyze, evaluate, reason, and problem solve. Finally, the writing section includes an essay. This section is optional, but it may be sent to any college that you apply to. If you are in the process of studying for the ACT and feel like you may need additional assistance, you should connect with a private tutor. Session Summaries by ACT Tutors

Louisville, KY ACT tutoring
The student and I talked about the ACT Reading section, the types of passages and types of questions. The student had a really positive attitude and was eager to learn both strategy and content. I left the student with an assignment in the ACT prep book and some practice tests. I talked about identifying which type of questions were easy and which were hard or time consuming, and how to answer each type.

The student and I went through a thorough overview of the ACT science section. She did a variety of problems, covering physics, chemistry, biology, and natural sciences. I incorporated multiple types of questions, such as opposing viewpoints, data analysis and interpretation, and inferences. She seemed to take really well to these concepts, and I think we are well on our way to her goal. She will take a practice section of the ACT science before our next session, and we will work on math during our next session.

The student and I looked at some Critical Reading problems she's expressed worry about. We concentrated on tone and perspective, as well as context-dependent sentences. She picks up quickly, and once she has a strategy, she generally improves. I asked her to start doing timed CR tests in advance of the April test.

For this lesson, the student and I first went over the timed English section that she had completed. She only got 5 or 6 wrong for a scaled score of 32, which is a big improvement from her diagnostic. Next, we completed the math section from last time, and I can see definite improvement in her understanding of various math concepts, though math is still her most challenging area. Lastly, we worked through a science section, and she got most of the questions correct and did well with the strategies I told her about. For the next lesson, she will work on a timed Science section, practice more with the math, and work on an essay.

On this practice test, The student got a 30 composite (30/27/29/32), which is an improvement from before. After we reviewed the questions he missed, I suggested that he use a watch to help him with pacing during the test and also that he take a little more time on the English section to read the question and pay attention to the NOT questions. In the remaining time, we made sure that he knew the general math concepts that would be on the ACT. We covered all of the Pre-Algebra sections, and I explained the general formula of a circle, Least common multiple and greatest common denominator through prime factorization, divisibility rules for numbers, rules of exponents, general tips to make working with fractions quicker, and how odds work within probability.

I am very excited about the student's progress so far. He has made big strides in the reading and English sections of the test. We will continue to work on the timing of these sections and practice to keep them strong. The student's biggest area where we need to work is on the science section, as this is the hardest section to time and can be difficult. We will continue to work on this and get better. We spent some time on math as well, which we'll also keep progressing on, although I feel pretty good about where he's at right now.
