Early reading clicks when phonics, sight words, and comprehension come together — and Kelsey tackles all three as a current second-grade teacher who sees the full spectrum of emerging readers every day. Her background in Latin also sharpens her ability to break down word roots and spelling patterns in ways that make decoding feel less mysterious for young learners.

Early reading instruction is about building confidence as much as building skill — sounding out new words, recognizing sight words, and understanding what a sentence actually says. Anthony connects his English background to age-appropriate strategies like guided oral reading and vocabulary-in-context exercises that keep young readers engaged instead of frustrated.
Phonics, sight words, fluency, comprehension — early reading involves a lot of moving pieces, and Kaylee's speech-language pathology training taught her how each one builds on the last. She approaches elementary reading by identifying which specific skill is holding a student back, whether that's sounding out blends or retelling a story in sequence. Her experience working with diverse learners, including students at a refugee center, means she's comfortable adjusting her methods on the fly.
Learning to read is really learning to crack a code, and Patty's phonics background means she teaches that code systematically — blending sounds, recognizing sight words, and building fluency one level at a time. She's spent years working with beginning readers, including ESL learners, so she knows how to keep early reading sessions encouraging without skipping the fundamentals.
Early reading clicks when phonics, sight words, and comprehension practice come together in the right balance for each child. Andrew uses a patient, structured approach to decoding and fluency, making sure young readers build confidence with every session. He holds a 5.0 rating from families he's worked with.
I am an interdisciplinary educator with an Ed.M. from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and a B.A. from Dartmouth College. My background is primarily in integrated arts learning and museum education and I specialize in visual arts, history and art history, and object-based learning. In all subjects, I take a creative, inquiry-based and learner-centered approach, designing opportunities for each unique individual to meet their learning goals.
I'm not tutoring or buried in my textbooks, you will either find me rock climbing at the Triangle Rock Club, playing Ultimate Frisbee, working on my car, or enjoying the great outdoors (beaches, mountains, forests--you name it, I love it). On rainy weekends I enjoy tinkering with computers and old electronics, playing Pokemon, or picking at my guitar.
I am a recent graduate from a masters program in biostatistics at Columbia University. I received my Bachelor of Arts in biological sciences, with a focus in neurobiology at Northwestern University. In August, I will be starting a doctoral program in biostatistics at NYU. I was a teaching assistant at Columbia University in my department and also have tutored graduate students and undergraduates privately as well. My primary areas of tutoring are math and statistics coursework in addition to math sections on standardized tests such as the GRE and GMAT. I am very passionate about helping students feel more confident and excited about math. In my spare time, I enjoy running, playing piano, and spending time with friends and family.
I am a graduate of Wesleyan University, where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with High Honors. With eight years of experience working in education, I've tutored students in math, science, history, and English, as well as helped students prepare for standardized tests. I've guided adults towards passing the US Citizenship Exam and taught English in India, where I lived for six months. Whenever I work with a student I personalize the lessons to fit their particular learning style, since I know every student is unique and having the right fit can make all the difference in making learning fun and effective. My strengths are tutoring the social sciences and humanities, as well as making math and standardized tests approachable to students that normally don't like those subjects. In my spare time I like traveling, spending time in the outdoors (climbing & backpacking), meditation, and playing soccer. Next fall I will be beginning my PhD in Education at Harvard University.
I'm Solange - a recent graduate from Harvard where I studied Sociology & Women's Studies. I've been tutoring for eight years now, and have worked with a wide range of ages and in a wide range of subjects. Some of my specialties are college prep/test taking II worked in the admissions office on campus); social sciences; and literature/writing.
I am a graduate of Washington University in St Louis, where I received my Bachelor of Arts in History with minors in Humanities and Anthropology. Since graduation, I have worked as a tutor, teacher, and director of tutors at a charter public middle school in Boston. During this time I also received my Masters in Mild to Moderate Disabilities from Simmons College. I have worked extensively with students with a range of abilities, including students with specific learning disabilities, emotional impairments, dyslexia, and ADHD. My teaching experience has given me a deep understanding of the knowledge and habits essential to academic success and has given me the opportunity to hone a variety of strategies that ensure students at each level can achieve their academic goals. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, my favorite ones are Reading, Elementary/Middle School Math, History, and Test Prep. In my experience, tutoring is the most rewarding when a student has that "aha!" moment and achieves a new level of understanding and confidence in his/her abilities. I am a firm believer in the transformative power of education, and I see my role to be that of a facilitator and coach who is there to help the student reach his/her goals through individualized support and rigorous practice. In my free time, I enjoy reading, running, practicing my Spanish, and discovering new music. I am also an avid traveler and just got back from a 3 month trip to South America. I look forward to the opportunity to work with you!

Frequently Asked Questions
Many elementary students struggle with phonics foundations, fluency, and comprehension—especially when transitioning from learning to read to reading to learn. In Louisville's diverse school environment, students may also face challenges with vocabulary building and connecting what they read to their own experiences. Personalized tutoring helps identify exactly where a student is struggling and provides targeted practice to build confidence and skills.
Tutors start by assessing your student's current reading level, identifying specific areas like decoding, fluency, or comprehension that need support. From there, tutoring sessions focus on strategies tailored to your child's learning style—whether that's phonics drills, guided reading practice, or comprehension activities. Regular feedback and progress tracking help ensure your student is making measurable gains throughout the tutoring relationship.
Strong comprehension requires more than just decoding words—students need to understand main ideas, make predictions, and connect details to the bigger picture. Expert tutors use proven strategies like guided questioning, visualization, and text annotation to help students actively engage with what they're reading. With consistent practice and personalized feedback, students develop the thinking skills that make reading more meaningful and enjoyable.
Yes. Tutors working with students in Louisville are familiar with the reading standards and expectations across elementary grades, whether your student is in early literacy (K-2) or transitioning to chapter books and independent reading (3-5). They can support classroom learning while also filling gaps and accelerating progress based on your child's individual needs.
The first session is focused on getting to know your student and understanding their reading strengths and challenges. The tutor will likely do some informal assessment—listening to your child read, asking comprehension questions, and discussing what they enjoy reading. This helps establish a baseline and allows the tutor to create a personalized plan that matches your student's goals and learning style.
Many struggling readers develop anxiety around reading, which actually makes learning harder. Personalized tutoring provides a low-pressure environment where students can practice at their own pace, receive encouragement, and experience success with appropriately challenging material. As skills improve and students see their own progress, confidence naturally grows—and confident readers are more willing to tackle new books and take risks with their learning.
Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors who have experience supporting elementary readers and understand what works for different learning styles. When you get matched with a tutor, you can discuss your student's specific challenges, learning preferences, and goals to ensure it's a good fit. Most families find that the personalized approach—where the tutor gets to know your child—makes a real difference in engagement and progress.
Fluency is about reading smoothly and automatically—recognizing words quickly without stumbling—while comprehension is understanding what those words mean. Both matter: a student might read words fluently but miss the meaning, or understand concepts but read so slowly that comprehension breaks down. Expert tutors address both skills, ensuring your student can read with speed, accuracy, and understanding.
