The purpose of the course is to develop lifelong, healthy individuals with an understanding and academic knowledge of wellness as a lifestyle, exercise and fitness, nutrition, and consumer products and services. Emphasis is placed on implementing healthy nutritional choices, developing a fitness / wellness plan, integrating science principles as related to nutrition and fitness, and practicing wise consumer decisions. We will be active through light exercise or mindfulness activities weekly. There is no cooking in this class. This is a beginning level course which covers a variety of food preparation principles. Units include but are not limited to: safety and sanitation, food preparation, basic nutrition, the essential nutrients and their impact on the body. The course focuses on personal and family resources, job and career, personal and family finances, and wellness. In addition, the course will cover effective communication and healthy interpersonal relationships across the life span. This is an upper level course for students interested in expanding their leadership qualities and ethics. This course includes but is not limited to units on: Qualities of Leadership; Leadership Theories; Personal Leadership Styles. This course will offer the opportunity to practice leading teams and includes learning about conflict resolution skills, and the nature of effective communication. Preference will be given to students who have taken at least one other FCS course. Students build on prior knowledge and skills in the program of study to further develop and apply employability and technical skills that prepared them for success in future career and postsecondary education. Must complete at least 60 hours of work over the course of a semester. Hours checked bi-weekly by FCS teacher. This course may not count towards your required minimum course load (6 courses for juniors and seniors; 8 courses for sophomores). Students participating in this work study option may not simultaneously earn credit for Work Study through the Counseling Department. Estimated homework time: Up to 15 minutes per class. This project-based course introduces students to the fundamentals of video storytelling and media production, with no prior experience required. Students will acquire both technical skills and creative competencies by working through the three phases of video production: pre-production, production, and post-production. Throughout the course, students will work individually and in teams to create a variety of projects, such as public service announcements (PSAs), commercials, music videos, and news reports. An emphasis is placed on developing transferable skills like critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and effective communication. Students will also analyze and critique various forms of media to understand the historical context, ethical considerations (such as copyright law), and societal impact of film and television, preparing them for future career opportunities in creative industries.

Prerequisites:Successful completion of Introduction to Media or instructor approval. This class challenges students to develop their creative voices while mastering the technical and aesthetic aspects of professional video production. This course emphasizes visual storytelling, audience engagement, and the strategic use of media to inform, entertain, and influence. Students will work individually and collaboratively on real-world projects that mirror industry expectations, fostering essential skills in project management, professional collaboration, and critical thinking. Key areas of study include: - Advanced Cinematography: In-depth camera operation, shot composition, lighting techniques (e.g., three-point and specialized lighting setups), and camera movement. - Pre-Production & Directing: Scriptwriting from treatment to final script, storyboarding, scheduling, budgeting, casting, and directing on set. - Post-Production & Effects: Non-linear editing using industry-standard software (e.g., Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe After Effects), color correction/grading, and the integration of motion graphics and special effects. - Journalism & Broadcasting: Newsgathering, on-camera interviewing, producing live studio shows (e.g., the school news program), and operating a studio control room. The course culminates in the creation of a professional-quality digital portfolio and demo reel, demonstrating readiness for post-secondary education, internships, or entry-level employment in the media and communication fields. Potential Industry Certifications: Students may have the opportunity to earn industry certifications such as Adobe Premiere Pro.

We are the news media arm of Erie High School. We need people of all interests, whether it’s sports, politics, entertainment, fashion, news or anything else. We are looking for the best team of news writers and stories tellers in the school to continue to establish the reach of the Erie Tiger Network This course is a beginning publications course that will explore interviewing techniques, news writing, feature news writing, editorial writing, and investigative reporting.\_students will learn various types of software involved in publishing as well as layout design. The importance of editing and proofreading will be stressed.

Estimated homework time: Up to 15 minutes per class ANDmust attend 2 broadcasted Events on the Erie Tiger Network This is the class for those interested in being on the Erie Tiger Network Live Team. We are the electronic & published media arm of EHS. From online web journalism to live sports broadcasting, the Erie Tiger Network is more than just a class, it’s a full journalism media experience. We need people of all interests whether it’s announcing sports, using a camera, being a TV producer, or a reporter. Students will also create documentary and narrative video productions and chronicle various school activities. Students will also produce short, creative films, and public service announcements. Students will assume leadership roles in video production.

This course continues the development of the student’s acquired abilities from French 1, 2, and 3, especially in listening comprehension and conversational skills in French. Students will continue to work on the five standards (Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities) through daily practice with other students, the teacher, and internet activities. Television and multimedia will be used to enhance student learning and to encourage more engagement with the language and culture. The students will read short prose stories and poetry written by French-speaking authors. There will be more use of French-speaking music for listening comprehension and translation practice. The goal is to use the target language 90% of the time, helping the student achieve fluency, which is the goal of the course.

AP Exam Fee required AP French Language and Culture is equivalent to an intermediate-level college course in French. Students cultivate their understanding of the French language and culture by applying interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational modes of communication in real-life situations as they explore concepts related to family and community, personal and public identity, beauty and aesthetics, science and technology, contemporary life, and global challenges.​​​​​​
