History Tutoring review by Peter in San Francisco-Bay Area, CA
We discussed a mini AP multiple choice exam. I had the student complete the 30 questions by himself as I kept time. I tallied up the questions to see what topics the student needed to review. I determined the older history (1450-18th century) was what he had most difficulty with, and we began reviewing there after the test. I saw an essay he wrote and he seems to do phenomenally there. I asked the student to write one of the essays provided on the test for me within the time limit for our next session. I did not leave him with any practice, though I told him to continue practicing AP multiple choice questions before our next session. I saw his grade for his AP European class.

I helped her prepare a presentation about films that demonstrate social justice themes. I helped her with wording and identifying the link between the concept/theme of social justice and the movie scenes she wanted to present.

The student and I first started off talking about the movie he watched, which I had assigned as homework the last session. He mentioned that he was able to see a clearer picture of it. In the lecture, he and I discussed economic policies like inflation, the gold standard, and real/nominal income, as these concepts supplement the discussion of the 1890's Panic and 1896 gold v. silver debate and election. Following this, we discussed the history of the 1890's and the ending of the Gilded Age. Homework consists of personal review of the 1990's and 1980's. In addition, he must look into the speech I showed him.

History Tutoring review by Louis in San Francisco-Bay Area, CA
Today I brought college-level history textbooks and we looked through the table of contents to understand how American history is organized and periodized. I then gave this the prompt and documents for a document based question (DBQ) taken from a US History exam. We discussed how you would go about creating an effective thesis and how the documents would aid in that process. For next session, he will be reading a chapter in the textbook to gain more content knowledge, and he will develop a thesis statement and introduction paragraph to an essay answering the DBQ.

I had practice questions ready on testing world history (specifically from the Neolithic through the end of the classical period) and I had the student go through question by question, with me helping explain the context and then having him answer the question. If he got it incorrect, I would help steer him to the right answer. We are going to have another lesson on Thursday.
