Algebra Tutor • +8 Subjects

Hello!I am John Dacey, a veteran public school teacher with over 30 years of classroom experience. As a special education teacher, I have had the opportunity to work with a wide range of students successfully in a number of academic subjects. However, my specialty is math. I know the Middle School Math, Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II curricula extremely well. I have also worked with tutoring college students taking a remedial math class. I have helped many reluctant, struggling math students gain confidence, raise grades, and achieve success on standardized math tests. I am also skilled at challenging and motivating advanced learners.I am serious about helping students gain and retain new skills, but I also believe in making learning fun. Whether we approach learning through games, challenges, or through a straight-ahead business approach, you will be strongly involved in the learning process, and will return to your classroom confident in your abilities to excel. If you're looking for tutoring in other subjects, I can be especially helpful in developing your writing and grammar skills. I have taught U.S. History and English and can help with those subjects, as well.Whether you're the strongest student in the class, or struggling just to stay afloat, I can help build your skills so that you can maximize your potential.

I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Neuroscience from the University of Pittsburgh in 2004. In 2012, I completed graduate school at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia, with a Master of Science degree in Molecular Biology and Genetics.I am now growing my career as a scientist at Thermo Fisher Scientific in Richmond, VA. I have tutored math and science for over a decade now and I love it! I have tutored elementary through high school levels of math and science including Physical Science, Earth Science, Biology, AP Bio, Chemistry, pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calc, and Trigonometry. I have also helped students with standardized testing such as state tests (SOL), PSAT, and SAT math.I would say that my favorite subject is Algebra! I enjoy tutoring because it gives me the opportunity to focus on a student and communicate the topic to them in a way that is hard to achieve with so many students in a classroom. It is so rewarding to me to see when students "get" it and math is made that much easier for them.

Anthropology Tutor • +13 Subjects

I am a recent graduate from James Madison University with a degree in Spanish and Anthropology. In my experience tutoring Spanish at a college level, I learned that students see the greatest results with a more hands-off approach. In other words, students do better when they do their work themselves with the guidance of a tutor or instructor. Aside from my knowledge of Spanish and anthropology, I have experience with AP Spanish Language, Environmental Science, U.S. History, and U.S. Government. In my spare time, I enjoy digital and film photography, hiking, and the occasional Netflix binge here and there. I am available to tutor students whenever needed and can make accommodations for any and all students who need academic help.

College English Tutor • +10 Subjects

I received my Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from University of Central Florida. I also have certifications in ESOL (ELL) and ESE. I was a teacher in Florida for eleven years. I taught separate ESE classes K-5, then self- contained ASD K-5, third grade and kindergarten regular ed. with inclusion. I also participated in the "homebound" program through my school district, which was tutoring for students who had medical issues which impaired their attendance at school. I love teaching and tutoring of most subjects, except fourth/ fifth grade math. My "style" is as much hands-on as possible,as well as a lot of probing questions. I try to get a working knowledge of the students' background information, and ways they learn best before trying to teach them. I love spending time with my (adult) children and my grandchildren. I love animals/pets and have had many different kinds through the years. I get excited to try new recipes-both food and dessert items. I enjoy watching sports, and learning about new places. I really like to travel, although I haven't been out of the U.S. in a very long time.

10th Grade Reading Tutor • +22 Subjects

Working with students has always been a passion of mine. I knew from a young age that I would become a coach and a teacher. Throughout the last 7 years I have been given the opportunity to explore this passion in multiple ways. I have coached thousands of cheerleaders across the United States with various backgrounds, working with children from 5 years of age, to young adults. I watched them progress physically, mentally, and socially over a week to sometimes years. Coaching helped me to develop and master the time management, organizational, and communicative skills needed to efficiently stay on task and help kids learn to their fullest ability. While coaching in various school districts I earned my Associate of Science [Social Sciences] Degree from Northern Virginia Community College, as well as, my Bachelor of Arts [English] Degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. After obtaining these credentials, I applied to the Teacher Preparation Program, along with, the Graduate Program for Secondary English Education with Virginia Commonwealth University. After I started the Graduate Program at VCU, I worked with middle and high school students which widened my variety of knowledge within the classroom. The hands-on experience I've gained from classroom teaching has taken my mentor-ship and leadership skills to the next level while allowing me to witness and feel the sense of community offered by the classroom dynamic.Writing has always been a passion of mine, and I believe that it is important for students to have a background in reading and writing skills in order to succeed in their education. During my many internships in college, I was able to implement reading and writing strategies to help my students in their academics. I hope to be able to share these strategies while tutoring, and I look forward to working one-on-one with students of all ages while I jump start my teaching career. I believe that my experience at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, working with students one-on-one, on writing, literature, and phonics has given me the tools I need to help all of my Varsity Tutors students succeed. I look forward to working with your students!

College English Tutor • +5 Subjects

I have recently acquired my Bachelor's in English from Virginia Commonwealth University. I graduated a Distinguished English Major. I am applying for my MFA in poetry next. I have had over two years of experience working with college-level students at the remedial level and at senior level and I've worked a lot with non-traditional trajectory students. I enjoy it quite a bit. I felt rewarded when one of the students I was working closely with turned his work ethic around and began to take his writing seriously. His teacher said it was because of me. That was an incredible feeling. I was very proud of the both of us.I tutor creative writing (creative nonfiction, poetry, fiction), I assist with editing essays (and having just polished a longform essay thesis I have experience in both shortform and thesis-length work), I can assist with writing personal statements, I have public speaking experience, and I can assist with reading comprehension/literary analysis. My favorite subject to tutor is creative writing because I am so passionate about it myself. My philosophy when it comes to tutoring is about extending grace toward the self and others. People need time to refine and internalize their skills. If students can acquire a skill immediately then that's fantastic but it's important to exercise patience and getting to know your learning style so others know how to best adapt to your needs. I can help with learning styles as well.
