I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Interior Design and a Master of Fine Art in Ecological Architecture. Both schools I attended were quite small and I thrived on the personal attention. I brought that along with me into my teaching; working one-on-one with students is a vital ingredient to their success. Over 12 years of teaching, I have received much personal gratification from watching firsthand the growth and development of my students. Learning should be fun, with delicious little moments of satisfaction that we want to experience again and again.

I am a proud graduate of the University of Arizona here in Tucson. While my undergraduate work focused on Elementary Education and Visual Art (I am an artist, too, and love creating visual art), my graduate work focused on School Leadership, with a focus in Principalship. I've worked as an educator in Southern Arizona for many years, including in the border town of Naco, Sonora, Mexico. I love empowering students to understand and tackle Mathematics, and to see the connections between Math, Visual Art, and everyday life. I absolutely love working with kids and young adults, and fostering the passion to become a lifelong learner.

I am a recent graduate from the University of Arizona here in Tucson, Arizona. For my undergraduate studies, I majored in Ecology and Environmental Biology, with minors in Chemistry and Art History; I am in the process of applying for graduate school to study Environmental Sustainability. My love of nature and the outdoors really strengthened my desire to pursue a career in environmental science. Although science is what I have chosen to study, I am extremely strong in the areas of reading, writing, editing, history and general social studies. In high school I excelled in AP Composition, Literature, World History, and European History. My test scores from high school reflect a strong understanding of the material, and I also excelled at the SAT Subject Test for Literature. I have been working for Varsity for over 5 years, and have tutored a wide range of students of all ages. I am very comfortable with children who might be shy or nervous working with a tutor, as well as those who are not too enthused about having any extra work! My tutoring style involves incorporating not only the review of the material but also practice in how to take notes, become an active and engaged learner, and improve in critical thinking.

AP Chinese Language and Culture Tutor • +11 Subjects
I have been teaching and tutoring Mandarin Chinese for over five years. I lived in China and Taiwan off and on between 2002 and 2010. I've participated in study abroad, Internships abroad, service, and teaching while overseas. I received a BA in Mandarin Chinese from Brigham Young University in 2009 and scored superior on a national oral exam (OPI) in Mandarin. Although Chinese can seem intimidating and difficult, it is in many ways much easier to learn than Latin-based languages such as English and Spanish. Chinese is like learning the language of cavemen; it is visual, musical, and established on basic, conjugation-free grammar. I have a passion for helping individuals overcome their language challenges by helping them recognize their own learning styles and catering to their needs. As a student in an Educational Technology Program, I tend to use technology as an aide to learning. I believe that learning should be interesting and enjoyable and that by maintaining motivation in learning, students are better able to retain information and learn more quickly. You will find Chinese to be fascinating and fun and learning it will become a life-long hobby. In my spare time, I enjoy being outside, playing sports, dancing, painting, watching movies, and spending time with my husband and baby boy.

I received both a B.A. in sociocultural anthropology and a B.A. in archaeology at the University of Cincinnati. It was during my undergraduate career that I participated in a variety of archaeological field projects, such as the Southern Albanian Neolithic Archaeological Project (SANAP). I have also done cultural resource management work in Mariemont, Ohio. While surveying in the Kaibab National Forest as part of the Upper Basin Archaeological Research Project (UBARP), I fell in love with the landscape of Arizona and subsequently moved to the Southwest to pursue a Ph.D. in archaeology.I recently graduated with my Masters degree in zooarchaeology from the University of Arizona, where I will continue for my Ph.D. My experiences at the UofA have cultivated in me a love for teaching. I have worked as a teaching assistant for a variety of undergraduate introductory courses and have taught discussion sections in sociocultural anthropology, archaeology, and biological anthropology. I thrive in a classroom environment. I prefer to foster an environment in which students are active participants in the process of learning. I like to encourage students to think critically about the material they are learning and to be a part of a back and forth exchange of ideas. In my free time, I like to paint but I feel that teaching is one of the best avenues I have found for expressing creativity and I plan to continue teaching while pursuing a career in archaeology.
