Biology Tutoring review by Melissa in Houston, TX
The student is getting ready to take his test in biology. They are reviewing over the chapters that they covered this year. We started by going over the parts of the cell; organelles and their function, since this was a topic that he felt he didn't understand well. We then reviewed in more detail the chapter discussing the skeletal system and muscles since they went over it really quickly in class.

Today the student and I finished chapter 3 by reviewing pedigree analysis. We then moved on to chapter 4 which discussed modes of inheritance that do not exactly follow Mendel's rules. We discussed conceptualizing alleles as wild-type (normal) and mutant and the nomenclature to describe these alleles. We also discussed how individuals can have more than two alleles for a given gene, such as with blood types.

We reviewed topics for the student's A.P. biology exam that she had trouble with on her last exam. First, we discussed recombinant DNA technology and learned how to construct a restriction map of a plasmid from a single and double digest gel. Next, we reviewed the acquired immune system and distinguished between B and T cells. Then, we briefly went over several topics including: sense receptors, how the ear works, and the sliding filament model of muscle contraction.

Biology Tutoring review by Mike in Houston, TX
The student, his parents and I discussed his current grade and what work would necessitate an A for the semester. We began the session by looking at the pre-lab questions on the fetal pig dissection. First, we discussed the definitions of the following anatomical labels: ventral, dorsal, posterior, and anterior. We then moved through each of the questions, using the lab reading material as a guide. We had to return to the anatomical labels and decided to devise a way to recall the words and definitions using the root of each word. We finished the pre-lab questions and worked out a set of short-term goals that can be completed before the two days of final preparation/review begin next week.

In this session, the student and I finished going over her packet. She hopes to get more review material from her teacher by our next session. For the rest of this session, I quizzed her on sections that she had trouble with when we went over them in previous sessions.
