I want to give young people the tools they need to build a brighter future. From an early age, teaching and mentoring have been passions of mine, and I was able to hone those skills while studying English and writing at Gettysburg College. During summers while attending college, I was a teacher's assistant at Suffield Academy's summer program. After receiving my BA, I worked in digital marketing as a lead writer and content creator, helping small businesses expand online. The pandemic realigned my priorities, however, and I switched careers to teaching. For the past year, I have been teaching English online as I work to receive my English Teacher Certification. My teaching philosophy involves an emphasis on critical thinking and helping students find connections in literature, and I love to use modern art and culture to show how old ideas and people have had profound influences on our own lives.

Throughout my time in this position I have taught a broad spectrum of classes, but my main concentrations have been in Writing, American Literature, and British Literature. I also teach the verbal SAT prep class in my district. I obtained my BA from The College of New Jersey with a major in English. I believe that teachers can help students find intrinsic motivation. Every child is capable of much more than they believe and it is our job as adults and teachers to provide children with the skills they need to unlock their potential. I enjoy working one-on-one with students because is really enables me to delve into the content and help students really understand.Outside of teaching, I am a single mother of two beautiful children. We love to ski, go to the beach, swim, dance, roller-skate, read, and scout. I recently completed by Masters degree in Biology from UNCC where I worked in a Marine Biology Research Lab. I examined the potential toxicity of metal nanoparticles to sea urchin and oyster embryos and larvae. I have also spent time studying honey bee behavior. Towards the end of my undergraduate career, I worked as a tutor at UNCC assisting students in the Introductory Biology courses for both majors and non-majors. As a graduate student in the Biology department at UNCC, I have taught the General Biology for Majors lab courses for two years. I also had an active role in the lecture component of these courses. I really enjoy helping alleviate the stress associated with a science class so that students can begin to appreciate just how cool this information can be.

Communication and active listening are two of my greatest skills because they allow me to understand the student's needs. I'm an expert SAT tutor.I have over five years experience tutoring this test and over 15 years teaching experience, and I get great results from the index card method.I show my students how to make custom index cards from all of the problems that they've missed on the test. The cards allow them to re-confront the questions which they missed on the practice tests, again and again, until the ideas and understandings that form the solution become integrated into their current skill set.Complete explanations, which I review with them, point by point, are printed on the back, first by me, and then, by imitation, by them. I stress the quality of each of these seemingly obvious steps, because the effectiveness of my method depends upon all of them working together. I insist on a minimum of three problems reviewed in one session and focus on the student adopting the method of short, very frequent review of the material, throughout the day. This technique works! Ambitious students will use this method in whatever they choose to study in the future, so the techniques they learn in my little SAT bootcamp is well worth the money.

I earned my BA in Secondary Education with a teaching certification for Spanish for K - 12th grade from New Jersey City Universtiy. I have previously taught ESL students, computer classes, and tutored at the community college level. I've also worked as a high school Spanish teacher.Hermine Marshall once said "Teachers need to discover new perspectives and new solutions to the problems of learning, ultimately improving the learning environment, by restructuring the frame through which they perceive a problem and generating alternative metaphors." No student learns exactly the same way. Students must trust you as a tutor so they can tell you how they best learn. I always want my students to feel comfortable in their learning environment.I include exercises that are relatable for students in our sessions. I want to help students build connections and scaffold the learning. When learning a language, culture plays a huge part, so I want to relate the learning to Spanish culture as much as possible.In my spare time I enjoy painting, trekking, and soccer.

Surgical Technology has been my life since 2005. I had not known of the field while in high school. As I returned back to my home town after several years, I explored the local institutions for programs. I came across Surgical Technology and it seemed interesting. My decision and future were sealed the first day in the clinical rotation. The case was an Exploratory Laparotomy with bowel resection. I was so excited to see inside a human body that I was pushing the surgeon out of the way and asking questions about everything I saw. I entered the education portion of the field and saw that I absolutely love to teach! My goal now is to thoroughly prepare every student I teach not only for the certification exam but this great field with endless possibilities and opportunities!
