After graduating from UC San Diego with a Bachelor's Degree in Literature/Writing I spent two years as a Peace Corps volunteer teaching English in Ukraine. In addition to teaching fourth through eleventh graders in the classroom, I worked with motivated students individually to prepare them for academic competitions and qualifying tests for study abroad programs. I also led English clubs in the city library where I helped university students and adults improve their conversational skills and their knowledge of the English speaking world. It was an immensely rewarding and formative experience, from which I gained the ability to tailor my teaching methods to meet the needs of every individual I worked with and to overcome language and cultural barriers through patience, understanding, and a good sense of humor.While I enjoy teaching the mechanics of Englishwhether as a first language or secondmy true love is Literature. I went to NYU and studied Linguistics, and am continuing my studies for an Applied Linguistics Masters here in California.I have been teaching and tutoring for many years, since I started college. I've done private SAT Prep tutoring both here and in New York, as well as prep for other standardized tests such as the ISEE, SSAT, and HSPT. I also teach a bi-weekly SAT Prep course in Glendale, and an advanced Competition Math class for two age groups (6-8 and 9-12). It's a lot of fun! In the ACE program, worked with first-year EOP (Educational Opportunities Program) students to encourage them in their writing and develop their own voices within their composition. Also, I provided additional peer support during the revision process and helped students to focus on the importance of organization and structure within an essay.When I was placed in the ACE program my first year of work, and I challenged first-year EOP (Educational Opportunities Program) students to develop their own voices within their composition. As a drop-in writing tutor, I provided constructive peer support during the revision process, drawing the students' attentions to the importance of structure and organization over grammar.My philosophy on writing and improving writing is that it's a process. I can't stress that enough. Writing goes beyond just having correct grammar and the ability to utilize an exhaustive vocabulary; it is a way of solidifying your thoughts as a small contribution to the world of education and, perhaps, the world at large. I am willing to invest the amount of time needed to polishing developing writers and students so that they come away with more than just a corrected essay or some more grammar knowledge; I am seeking to help them hear their own voice in their writing and bring that with them to the next step in their careers.I believe I'm uncommonly well-suited for being an English tutor because I've come from a place of not really being able to write. I got a C my first quarter of English in high school, and since then, I've averaged an A- in my college English courses. My course background includes a full load of college-level premed courses (three years of biology, a full year of organic chemistry, biochemistry, etc.), and my favorite subjects are math, physiology, and writing.I love teaching! I am a registered college science tutor at USC, and I also teach younger students at a weekly Girl Scout program in Watts. In high school, I tutored for the SAT as well as teaching swimming lessons for over four years, so I am very confident in my ability to make complicated topics understandable. My favorite area is standardized testing. I love the look on a student's face when they realize that they don't have to be nervous about an exam - that it can actually be really fun if the questions are viewed as the simple patterns they really are.In my free time, I love watching movies, reading, swimming, and exploring the city.
