In grade school, I wanted to be a history teacher. I looked up to my history teachers in high school and I realized that I had a skill for teaching. During high school, I tutored in history, biology, English and writing. I understood the different ways that students can learn whether that be visually, physically, verbally, logically, or socially. I tried to use real life examples and help my students learn the best way they know how to learn. I was patient with them and I took time to figure out their personalities in order to assess how to help them learn more efficiently. I think tutoring is more than trying to help a student pass a class or do some homework; its trying to teach them how to learn better in anything they take on. Later on, I volunteered at a elementary school with a professional company which helped kids catch up to their reading level and that gave more a guideline on how to create a lesson plan for children with learning disabilities. Recently, I volunteered at a high school to help young girls better themselves in all their subjects.

Academic success can be pervasive for a good deal of students today. The causes for these difficulties vary, but I believe they mostly arise from the fact that in classrooms, teachers teach in one set way for a large number of students. This is why I believe that tutoring is essential. In smaller settings, students can have their specific needs met without the worry of rapidly trying to cover a syllabus or slowing down a class.I believe my experiences and travels make me an ideal tutor for a number of reasons. Attending school in the US and Nigeria exposed me to lots of teachers with a numerous teaching styles, I thus have a wealth of styles to refer to. While in high school abroad as part of a school organized program, I was chosen to tutor my classmates as well as students in lower grades in the sciences. These subjects included calculus, physics, chemistry, agricultural science and technical drawing to name a few. In college, I continue to tutor my peers when I can, which has helped me establish a firm and continually growing knowledge of science and mathematics courses. The subjects which I personally enjoy teaching the most are physics, mathematics (geometry, algebra, and calculus) and economics mainly because they interest me and their link to our contemporary world. My teaching style employs learning by problem solving with discussions to solidify knowledge. I attempt to incorporate real life examples and pop culture interests where applicable to make learning a bit less dull.I completed my degree in Civil Engineering. When I am not in a classroom, I enjoy historical novels. I also have a passion for 80's-90's music and films.

Learning anything can be difficult, especially when one is not interested and fails to make a genuine effort. The first step is to find the beauty in knowledge. I have gone through this transition and can relate to someone who has difficulty learning weather it originates from lack of interest or inability to understand concepts using conventional methods. I, as a visual and conceptual learner, find myself able to study and learn more effectively if I manipulate what I am learning to fit my preferences and I can help and I am willing to help one learn how to do this.I am a senior at the University of Texas at Dallas and I will be graduating in Spring 2016. I have completed my B.S. degree in Biology and am currently working on a B.S. degree in Neuroscience. I will enter either pharmacy school at UT or medical school after I graduate. I have been tutoring since high school, starting out in mathematics. In college I tutored in mathematics, biology, chemistry and even standardized tests such as the PCAT and MCAT. I also have work experience in revising and writing questions for these tests. Lastly, I am a TA for anatomy and physiology at my university and this has been my favorite teaching experience. My favorite subjects to tutor are math (anything from geometry and SAT math to calculus) and science- particularly biology and chemistry. I love subjects such as anatomy, neuroscience and organic chemistry, which make you form images in your mind and learn using spatial skills. I find that this is one of my strengths and it does not stop at the books. I also play sports such as soccer and football. The skill definitely helped me as a goalkeeper for high school team.I like to enjoy the good-weather-days by swimming, playing football and futball, golfing and taking walks in the park. During down times I like to play darts, build things, do some microscopy or read books on neurology and evolution. I also am a big fan of video games and can entertain myself for weeks after getting a new game. I also love music as I have been playing the tuba and the snare since middle school. I especially like to play on my drum set whenever I come home for a few days. I have always loved being an athlete and I exercise regularly (my favorite workout is none other than the deadlift!) I enjoy nature and love going camping, taking hikes and boating. I am also an animal enthusiast, as my childhood dream was to become a zoologist and a marine biologist; I still hope to fight for conservation in Africa and South America after I am seasoned in my profession. My long term goal is to contribute to the effort to find causes/cures for many neuro-degenerative diseases as well as neural/psychotic disorders and in the field of neuroscience in general as it purely fascinates me.
