The student was on it today! She did great! We reviewed lots of words and she read them carefully and accurately. She read "Fat Cat" to me with great accuracy and fluency! We read a new book, "Rat Naps," and she did well at an instructional level. She struggled some with by, naps, and taps. We played a sight word game and she was even trying to sound those words out! YAY!

We reviewed sight/helper words. We also reviewed short a, i, o, and u word families. Introduced words with ck endings and compound words. She is not consistent when reading sight words individually; some days she will get words correct while other days she will miss the same word. She is also not consistent when reading sight words in stories; she will not be able to read the word "and" when practicing with flash cards but can read it in a sentence and vice versa. She is doing really well with sounding out words.

We worked a lot with rhyming nonsense words so the student could get used to the different common endings of one syllable words (ex. -ate, -ean, and -ight) . Then she broke up multi-syllable words up into syllables; first real words then nonsense words. She's getting better at decoding the different types of nonsense words and blending the sounds together. She also read selected SAT words and street names.

Student 1 - We read all of her sight words together and did a few phonics workbook pages (short u and blends/digraphs) Student 2 - We read two chapters of the Frog & Toad series. He performs much better when holding the book down close to him and using a pencil or finger to follow the words.

Today we continued with the phonics game I created for last weeks tutoring session and used the following blends: et, an, ub, in, sc, and wh. The student did an OUTSTANDING job!! Since this will be our last session for quite a while I told her we had to finish the year with a BANG and she delivered. I had her spell words she didn't know such as INDUSTRIOUS, INCINERATE, INSTINCT, SUBMARINE, FANTASTIC, SCRUMPTIOUS, SCULPTURE AND WHIMSICAL among many others she came up with on her own. She used great strategies to spell them out by sound and to make corrections. It was fun teaching her the meaning of the words and using them in sentences (You can incinerate the 3x5 cards after our session.). I am so proud of her and the unbelievable effort she showed today.

The student & I worked on the short vowel sounds "a," "i," "o," and "u." She is improving in her reading ability because she has learned to slow down and look at the entire word when she reads it, rather than guessing. She has no trouble with letter sounds, except for "g" and "y," but this will improve with practice. As we practice with more and more words she is unfamiliar with, she will continue to improve, as she can no longer guess at what a word says.
