Session Summaries by Latin Tutors

Latin Tutoring review by Andrew in Houston, TX
Once the student finished off the parsing exercises that he hadn't finished, we devoted the rest of the time to reviewing this lesson's material. I quizzed him several times on the declension of the demonstrative pronouns, and he got better at remembering the forms with the repetitions. He also made flash cards for the new vocabulary and we went through those several times. I quizzed him on the genitive and dative forms in addition to the meaning of the pronouns and adjectives. Using a variety of methods to reinforce the new forms should help them to stick in his memory, and to be easier to remember come test time.

Latin Tutoring review by Bradford in Houston, TX
Once we discussed the student's textbook and did a bit of diagnosis concerning what he needed to cover and not cover to catch up to where he needs to be in a satisfactory manner. We started by going over noun declension endings.

Tutor and student reviewed translations assigned at the close of previous session, and also reviewed vocabulary from the Latin Course's first level, stages 6-11. Tutor showed student how to prepare flash cards for studying verbs, and made several with him. In addition to further sentences for translation, tutor asked student to prepare flash cards as shown for verbs studied so far.

Latin Tutoring review by Claire in Houston, TX
We continued review of perfect tenses. Even though he understands the concepts fine, I stressed that the student needs to slow down when working in Latin. I assigned some homework some drills in the form of a crossword puzzle, which he seemed to enjoy.

Latin Tutoring review by Christopher in Houston, TX
The student translated the practice sentences assigned last week with minimal errors. He's improving, but still makes mistakes with case and verb endings, and too often relies on context or English cognates to try to guess at meaning. This chapter formally introduces the dative case, which I had already started to teach to him in paradigm form (declensions 1-3). Because we're meeting again tomorrow I assigned a smaller amount of practice work to familiarize him with the dative, and for our next session we'll focus on the different uses of that case.

Latin Tutoring review by Amy in Houston, TX
This session we worked on English to Latin composition. The student was struggling to break down the grammatical constructions/clauses in the English, so we decided to start with English sentence diagramming (to understand the grammar) before moving to Latin composition (where grammar dictates case endings of words, etc.). No extra practice. No recent scores (her last test was in January, and she just took a Latin exam).
