My main goal when teaching math is for the students to truly understand the concepts and reasoning behind math, and not just learn how to apply formulas and do well on tests. Although they may get good grades, this will be useless later in life. In my teaching experience, when students actually lear...

I am a graduate of Loyola University Maryland and San Diego State University. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, my Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, and my Master of Arts in Liberal Arts and Sciences. During my time at San Diego State I taught in both the English, Rhetoric and Writing Studies departments and served as a writing tutor for disabled students. Thus, it is no big surprise that Composition, Literature and the Verbal section of the GRE are the subjects I tutor. Of these three my favorite subject has to be the verbal section of the GRE since there are few feelings that are better than knowing that you helped someone get into their dream school. My pedagogical style focuses on finding a student's biggest weakness and then concentrating on negating this deficiency by continuously adding little improvements each week. When I am not teaching or tutoring you can find me on a tennis court, reading a novel or hiking in the mountains.

I graduated with honors from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where I earned a dual degree in Communications and French and Francophone Studies. I am keenly passionate about education, and especially about language studies which I believe are essential to the advancement of a global society. My travels throughout Europe and Asia have inspired me as a language learner and teacher. In the course of my academic and professional career I have taught students around the world in a variety of subjects related to English and French learning. As a university student I tutored adults and children in English and French, and I have also worked as a full time ESL teacher in Korea for several years. My teaching style is very interactive; I’ve found that students learn best when they can engage with the material through active dialogue, and when they feel that what they’re learning has real world relevance. My interests include reading and outdoor sports, especially skiing and hiking which help me to enjoy the beauty of nature and give me some peaceful time for reflection.

I am a PhD candidate in mathematics at the University of California, San Diego. I have over six years of teaching experience, both in the classroom setting and with personal tutoring.Dissertation work has opened my eyes to a wide range of mathematics, much of which I would be pleased to tutor. High schools and universities have a wealth of resources for students, but they tend to lack a setting that gives a student the freedom to reveal weaknesses in a subject or to question that subject at will. Not only do I enjoy conveying mathematics to students, but I am also interested in how mathematics is interpreted. Since tutoring frees students from concerns about how they are perceived by their peers, it can provide a clearer understanding of how they interpret the mathematics that is presented to them. This creates the opportunity for more effective instruction. When I'm not in the world of mathematics, I'm hiking in the wilderness, or concentrating on a chess problem, or cheering for my beloved New York Mets. I also love reading history and literature. I'm slowly learning art history, but that's going to take some time!

I graduated from Suncoast High School in Riviera Beach, FL, with an IB Diploma. I completed a dual-degree program at the University of Florida in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation as well as Zoology, with a minor in Chemistry. In college, I worked for a radioactive chemistry lab, working with isotopes in analyzing chemical levels in crop plants as well as research in fire ecology and native bird survivability. Briefly after college I worked for a state crime lab analyzing samples from performance animals, looking for illicit drugs using thin-layer chromatography. I left Florida to start a Masters Degree program at the University of Georgia, working with molecular biology techniques to attempt to identify the gene of interest in a cerebellar abiotrophy in pure-bred dogs. While I did that, I completed training as an Emergency Medical Technician and took coursework in Wilderness Search and Rescue at the University of West Georgia. I started a dual degree in veterinary medicine and graduate school, earning a DVM/PhD. My doctoral work was with viral diseases in white-tailed deer. I have spent the last two years in a residency program with the veterinary medical teaching hospital at UC-Davis, and I am now completing my final year of training here in San Diego studying conservation medicine.I have tutored students at all levels, from middle school to graduate school, and I have formally lectured undergraduates, graduate students, veterinary students, and technical college students. I love learning and am an enthusiastic teacher. My teaching philosophy, in a nutshell, centers on involving the student learner. How do they think? What interests them? Engaging students and working to avoid frustrating them is vital to effective teaching. It can be very challenging in a classroom setting, but in tutoring, it is usually a thoroughly adaptable method and enjoyable all around!

I am a graduate of San Diego State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and minors in Public Health and Counseling. Ever since middle school and my first dissection of a squid, I have enjoyed science! It's great to learn about a field of study where everyday is a new adventure of discovery.I have had experience tutoring incoming freshman at SDSU in Biology/Life Science and Chemistry. In my entry level Chemistry course, I received the highest score in my lab group for two semesters.I also had the opportunity to study abroad in Granada, Spain. I took four years of high school Spanish as well as an Intermediate course in college before I immersed myself in the language and culture of Espaa! I spent four months taking all of my courses in Spanish as well as living with a host family.Among my friends I am considered a great listener and counselor. I have a younger sister in the 7th grade and can understand the demands of today's youth in academics. In my free time, I love going to coffee shops to read and people watch and keeping active in a non-conventional way. I live near Mission Bay and love going to the park to ride around on my Scooter with friends!

I graduated from UC San Diego with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physiology and Neuroscience and minors in Psychology and Hebrew Language and Literature. Throughout my time in college, I continued to work on study methods to help me maintain a high level of understanding of topics while enjoying the process of learning as well. Being able to figure out what study methods worked best for me (regardless of the subject I was studying) is the reason that I believe I was successful in my undergraduate studies and is crucial in any kind of learning in my opinion.I strongly feel that focusing on what a person enjoys and using their strengths toward their advantage is the only way to help someone truly learn well and recall information correctly. This is the type of strategy that I would like to employ when I tutor your child. Because everyone learns differently, I will need to speak to the parents before the first tutoring session. The first thing I'd like to do is get to know your child by speaking to you. I would like to understand what your child enjoys to do (hobbies, sports, etc.) and what you feel is the best way your child learns. After I have a better understanding of who your child is, I will attempt to incorporate the things that your child enjoys to make the tutoring session much more fun and exciting. Whether it's through visuals, references or mnemonics, I will try to discover what works best and will continue using this method to teach your child the subjects that your child struggles with. My hope is that your child will continue to use and develop these methods of learning that they enjoy on their own as well so that one day they too can apply it to any future subject that they might struggle with.In my spare time, I enjoy sports (especially basketball), Krav Maga, the beach, traveling and meeting new people. I look forward to speaking to you and helping your child succeed in school and to help create a better path for your child to learn.

I will be graduating from the University of California, San Diego this June (2014). I will be receiving my Bachelor of Arts with Latin and Departmental Honors in Literature and Writing, with focuses in education, French Literature, Literatures of the World in English, and fiction writing. I have four years of tutoring and teaching experience at UC San Diego's Office of Academic Support and Instructional Services (OASIS), both in teaching undergraduate writing workshops and working with both undergraduates and high school students in one-on-one tutoring. I have also worked extensively with ESL students and students from inner-city high schools. I tutor a broad range of subjects, including argumentative and research writing, composition, reading comprehension, beginning French, stylistics and grammar, and literature. I especially love tutoring in argumentative writing and reading comprehension, which is why I enjoy working with students on SAT Critical Reading and Writing and GRE Verbal and Writing. Watching students develop critical skills and confidence in these subjects is the best part of my job!In my years working as a teacher and tutor, I've noticed that a student's confidence in a subject is often his or her main gateway to success. As a result, I work hard to both develop that confidence and the skills required to perform well both in class and on standardized tests. I also have a dynamic teaching and tutoring style that keeps students engaged and understanding the material. I understand that for most students, school is sometimes boring; luckily, I've been trained in how to keep them interested through both connecting to my students and involving them in their learning process. I do this by structuring my lessons around discussions that do not rely only on me just giving them information (unless it is necessary), but instead help them practice the critical thinking that leads them to coming up with solutions themselves. This has proven to be more effective than the "lecture" or "knowledge dump" methods, since students can then use their learning in other subjects and essay prompts. I guide my students in how to think; I don't tell them what to think.Outside of my academic work and interests, I love running (I've run track for eight years), hiking San Diego's beautiful trails, and painting.
