Today was the first day that I met with the student for a tutoring session in Geometry. We reviewed his homework assignment: a cumulative review of the most recent chapter covered in his class. He did well. Next time, we will continue our preparations for his Geometry test. We made a goal that he would get at least a B in the class. It was a good first session, and I think that we'll have a lot of success together.

We went over all of the new theorems and made sure that the student had good notes to review to really get them solid just before the test, and we spent a long time going over strategies to solve these kinds of problems. She is definitely getting more comfortable with proofs and using theorems! We went through some examples and spent a good chunk of time on proof by contradiction. We tried to make a game plan for every type of problem she might come up against, and then I had her practice those methods on a couple of problems. I have high hopes for this upcoming test!

The student had just had a quiz on adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. She had made some math errors, so we reviewed the kinds of problems that she had missed. We discussed methods of checking her answers to make sure that they made sense. Then, we previewed the lessons on multiplying and dividing fractions. She demonstrated a good understanding of using the 'multiplying by the reciprocal' method of dividing fractions. She demonstrated good understanding when using 'cross-cancellation' for reducing fractions before multiplying. However, at times, she would miss a factor and so not put her fraction in the simplest terms. We discussed taking a second look at her answers once she was finished with the problem.
