We hit some rough problems, but that presented a perfect opportunity to explain some general SAT strategies for how to deduce answers even when the problem is too hard to solve directly. I have asked the student to complete the remainder of the practice section we were looking at when I left for next week. Make sure she is reading the problems carefully to know what answer they're asking for.

The student seems very well prepared for his social studies exam tomorrow. He knows the material spot-on, so as long as he doesn't get flustered he should be fine. Continued with the math review and he's getting much better at all of the concepts, including long division.

The student got new, very challenging spelling words using the prefixes "non," "in," and "re."  She made some progress with these words as our session progressed.  She also is rapidly improving her quick division math facts.

We went over the answers to the student's ACT diagnostic in school, paying special attention to the English section and Math section. With the English portion, we went over strategies such as re-reading the choices and exaggerating comma pauses to determine correct structure.

The student and I worked on his math and science homework for the week. We worked further on graphing problems and working on speed and velocity. He did very well, although graphing problems where we have to sketch the graph and don't have a grid provided still prove a challenge.

We did a high-level overview of collections and searching (what are collections, what are some specific collections like lists, sets, and dictionaries, what are stacks and queues, what is a linear search, what is a binary search, what is a heuristic) and then we talked about sorting algorithms (what is complexity, why would you use some sorts instead of others), and finally we went over merge sort in detail.
