My name is Marie. I hold a bachelors degree in chemistry and have completed a year of graduate school towards a PhD in organic chemistry. One of my favorite things about chemistry is finding new strategic ways to solve problems. While in high school I tutored middle school math and once I was in college I began tutoring in chemistry and biology. It always feels really rewarding to teach someone something or help them see it in a new light.

I share my real-world experiences with students so they can best understand how the different concepts found in the exam are applied in real life.Overall, I am very easy going and enjoy working will all age groups and at all academic levels. I look forward to the challenges and rewards presented with each student!

I graduated cum laude from Regis University with a double major in English Literature and Philosophy, and a triple minor in Pre-law, Politics, and Vocal performance. I worked at the Regis University Writing Center as a Writing Consultant for four consecutive years starting my sophomore year in college. In addition to my consultant position, during the fall semesters of 2011, 2012, and 2013, I worked as a teaching assistant for three different freshmen writing seminars. I also gained some valuable writing and group collaborating experience through my position as an assistant editorial board member for an international undergraduate philosophy journal called *Stance* and through the process of getting one of my English Literature papers published in another international undergraduate journal of literary criticism and research in the discipline of English (published in The Oswald Review). While I love to teach a variety of subjects, I am most interested in teaching subjects in writing, English, Philosophy, Politics, Law, or anything related. As my variety of college studies suggest, I am extremely passionate about learning and I continue to find new interests. Due to my tutoring experience and the training I received as a writing consultant and teaching assistant, I strive to make students feel comfortable during tutoring sessions, and more importantly, my constant goal is for the student to learn something they might apply to future assignments within the specific class and other courses. While my passion for learning is a driving force in my life, I have a few other interests and hobbies. Music is one of my primary interests: I've played piano since the age of six, I used to play cello, and I am an active singer who participates in Colorado Chorale, one of Denver's prestigious choirs. Likewise, I also used to participate in musical theater productions, so this continues to be something of interest for me. In addition to my musical interests, I love to kayak, canoe, hike, and go up to the mountains with friends. Overall, I believe in a fair balance between maintaining my academic interests and cultivating my hobbies.

I am a recent graduate of Colorado College, where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy. I underwent extensive training to become a writing tutor in college, attaining international tutor certification from the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA), and going on to tutor students in a wide range of subjects. Through Colorado College, I also worked with a local high school to tutor Native American students. I am most passionate about tutoring students in philosophy, English and literature, and I am experienced in tutoring ESL students in both these subjects and others. I also enjoy working with students on their college application essays. I believe that every student has something interesting to say, and it is deeply rewarding to see a student realize this as we work together to craft a personal statement that is persuasive, concise and, most importantly, authentically their own. I am a strong believer in working collaboratively with students to foster a relaxed environment in which they can explore what interests them and by doing so develop an independent desire to learn. In my spare time, I like to read (literature and philosophy), write, snowboard (I competed in slopestyle and halfpipe in high school) and cook big meals with friends.

I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in May 2012 and received a dual Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy and Russian Language & Culture. After graduation, I worked for a year as an editor for a small fiction e-publishing company in Austin. During this year, I became certified as an ESL teacher, and in September 2013 I moved to Ukraine to teach English. While in Ukraine, I taught students of all skill levels, ages, and professional backgrounds. After nearly a year and a half of teaching in Ukraine, I decided to return to the US to study for the LSAT and apply to law schools with the goal of one day practicing immigration law. As a teacher, my strongest subjects are anything related to English, including Reading, Writing, and Literature. I also have a passion for foreign languages and have spent multiple years studying both Spanish and Russian, and as such would be happy to tutor any students of either language. I believe that a college education is vital for success in this country, and for better or worse standardized testing is a necessary step in applying to colleges. Though these tests can seem daunting, I believe that with the right amount of hard work and preparation, each student can achieve the results he or she desires. Outside of teaching and tutoring, I like nothing more than a good book or movie that makes me think, though I also enjoy watching and playing sports, especially soccer.

I am a Biochemistry graduate who excelled in the courses I tutor as an undergraduate student. Since my undergraduate studies I have strengthened not only my understanding of these subjects but also my love for them. All knowledge is beautiful but I am a true lover of science. To be able to accurately and precisely explain the world around us is a wonderful ability. I would like to help you attain not just an A in your course but also to share with you this wonder. As far as my tutoring background, I have tutored these subjects privately for close to seven years and at two Universities including one of our local Denver Universities. I am friendly, effective, and professional.Aside from all this lovely science, I am a lively conversationalist on running (particularly barefoot), hiking (particularly long distance, e.g., the Appalachian and Pacific Crest Trails), cycling, cooking, and, of course, chess. Finally, I also speak fluent Spanish.Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you.

I am a lifelong learner, and I would love to be your next tutor!I began tutoring in college, where I worked as a teaching assistant in biology. Since then, I have done both elementary and high school tutoring for a wide range of subjects.I am patient, positive, and respectful, and I love meeting new people. I structure my tutoring sessions around your preferences: both your present concerns, and your long-term goals. It is my aim to help you truly understand and internalize the material, not just find the correct answer.

I received my bachelor's degree in writing from Metropolitan State College of Denver in 2009.During the course of my undergraduate degree (and even before that and forward through today), I have published and won multiple awards in fiction, poetry, academic essay and song writing. Currently, I write regularly for web and print media. This work has included literary magazines, news sites, and blogs. I also have been able to freelance and ghostwrite for print and online platforms.During my undergraduate degree, I took a writing tutor course that helped me to gain theory and skills for being a writing tutor. In the class, I learned about meeting tutees where they are and to really listen to and find out what questions need addressing (everyone is different). I learned how to lead with helpful resources that can be used ongoing, even if/when tutees are unable to work with me. The goal, always, is to help direct tutees to become stronger writers who can at some point stand on their own.The writing tutor course led to work in the Community College of Denver writing tutor center where I helped numerous tutees with their essays, poems, fiction pieces and other writings. Outside of the writing tutor center, I have also helped coach professionals, non-profit bloggers, and artists gain direction, skills, and confidence in the writing craft.I love being able to guide students towards self-sufficiency. I often boast that I am a resources girl, and that writing is a learned skill which requires practice. Anyone, with enough diligence can master it. I think that writing is such a powerful tool. In many cases it gives people a voice. This is something I have learned from taking part as a volunteer and poet in Art from Ashes workshops (a Denver-based nonprofit organization that uses poetry and other art to empower youth). In the beginning, students are often quiet or even rambunctious, but during the course of the workshops, students begin to realize the power in their own words. It's a wonderful thing to witness! In January, I will begin Regis University's inaugural low residency MFA where I will focus on fiction writing and poetry while I freelance for news and other content print and web media. I am excited about this. I consider it buying time to further hone my own writing (I am always learning), and I'm looking forward to being able to offer more from that experience.

I am currently pursuing my PhD in Literature/Creative Writing at the University of Denver. Prior to beginning my doctoral studies, I was a creative writing/English lecturer at Washington University in St. Louis where I completed my MFA and senior post-graduate teaching fellowship. I received my BA in Philosophy from Carleton College in 2009. Before my time in St. Louis and Denver, I taught English Literature at the Loomis Chaffee School in Connecticut and, earlier, at Germantown High School in Philadelphia. During my time at Loomis and Germantown, I taught English Lit I/III, Contemporary Literature, 10th grade grammar and expository writing seminars, Literature of the Sea, Experimental Novel, and Creative Writing. At Wash U, I taught Fiction Writing I, II, and Microfiction, and last year I facilitated pedagogy training for Wash U MFA graduate students. I currently tutor at DU's Writing Center and, beginning this fall, I will teach undergraduate fiction classes. I have a marked interest in modern and contemporary fiction, though I very much look forward to helping students with all craft/literature/essay writing/verbal test taking endeavors.
