Since high school, I've been exposed to different aspects of education from mentoring peer immigrants to studying education policy. Studying cognitive science in college has solidified my interest in and taught me various effective teaching methods. Ive learned that there are different types of intelligence as well as different types of learning. In order to be an effective educator, it is important to establish a relationship with the pupil to utilize the pupils learning style.Moments from being a summer school teacher for 4th-6th graders and a resident assistant for 2 years, fuel my passion for teaching. The joy on the students faces when they achieve a goal or the gratefulness they express for my help stay with me to this day. By working with Varsity Tutors I hope to apply what Ive learned as well as gain more field experience.I recently came to DC from California to do an internship with the Department of State. Being born and raised in California, DC is quite different from what I'm used to but I am excited to be here! Please let me know if you have any more questions. Thank you.

Throughout my own educational career, I have had my fair share of bad and good teachers and professors. As a university graduate now, I am truly appreciative of those who genuinely cared and took the time to share their knowledge with me and to create an environment for me to thrive and better reach my academic goals. Fortunately, I myself have also had the privilege of teaching and tutoring as well, and of passing on that same legacy of academic inspiration. After working with a variety of different students in different subjects, I realize that I love stirring enthusiasm in students and helping them understand invaluable concepts that will eventually lead them to their own paths of success. No one student is the same. My many experiences have shaped my teaching style and philosophy which can be outlined in three main aspects:1. pace and styleWhen presented with new material, the first step is processing and understanding it. Different students take in and digest new material in different ways and with different timing. Hence, I utilize a number of different teaching methods and select those that best fit a student's needs. For a visual learner, for instance, I would make sure to incorporate diagrams, pictures, and maps to best engage that student's learning potential. As for pace, some students can only take in so much information at one time and I would break down information in a way that is easiest for them to digest.2. mastery and dexterityPerhaps the most important skill any tutor and cultivate in a student is critical thinking. When a student finally comes to understand material, it is important that he or she is able to execute those concepts in different contexts and in different scenarios. When a student asks questions, I often times like to respond with questions myself that help them guide them to the correct deductions and conclusions themselves. This will also help ensure their ability to do well on their tests when they don't have a tutor around.3. vision and applicationA student's motivation to do well should be driven by the ability to see the application and relevance of the knowledge they are learning. Whether or not a subject seems to have any direct correlation with their future career, there are always key concepts that will either help them better function in society or at their future career. I love helping students find take-away concepts from subjects and application in their own lives.

AP Spanish Literature and Culture Tutor • +22 Subjects
Over the years, the biggest problem I faced like many of my own private clients have, is that sometimes students don't know what the instructor is expecting from them. This can occur in any classroom and at any level. Students may be referring to unknown expectations of a teacher or a professor about a particular quiz, exam, midterm, essay or even the primary goal of the academic year. My job is to guide each student towards identifying and achieving what the instructor is looking for, and ultimately comprehending those difficult demands. I try to bridge the gap between the student and teacher. My primary goal is to lead to clarity - not further any confusion, difficulty, or frustration. Learning a language is hard enough. I simply guide the student by showing him or her new techniques to study and methods to learn about the Spanish language. This is turn gives the student the ability to achieve his or her individual goals. Moreover, the previous tension and confusion felt by the student begins to lessen with each session. As a personal tutor I hope to advance the development of a student's initial knowledge of the Spanish language into a solid foundation.

I am a credentialed teacher with ten years of experience. I have an M.A. in Teaching from USC (Multiple Subject/K-6) and a B.A. in Music from Pomona College. I have taught individual and group violin lessons from age 3 to adults throughout L.A., and I have taught general music in the Lawndale School District and at YOLA (Youth Orchestra L.A.) at HOLA (Heart of LA youth center in the Rampart District). I student-taught in general elementary school classrooms (2nd and 5th grade), and have tutored students at YOLA.No matter what the subject, my focus has always been on finding the unique strengths of each individual student, and building on those strengths to approach areas of struggle. I enjoy working with students with diverse learning styles and discovering the unique ways each student takes in and understands information. I firmly believe that everyone is smart in their own way, and I love to discover and appreciate each student's way of learning and thinking. I believe that we all construct our own knowledge through experience - we learn by doing, by experimenting, trying, and experiencing - and I encourage my students to try out and adjust their own strategies, instead of always expecting them to do it my way.I am an artist, writer and musician (I led a folk band for 5 years). I am an avid public transit rider and often get around by bicycle. I enjoy gardening and I am passionate about building community.

My name is Shaneequa and I am a 24 year-old professional in San Antonio. I am currently a Site Operations and Finance Associate with a local, education-based non-profit called City Year San Antonio. My work experience includes education reform, youth development, tutoring and program management. In the near future, I hope to run my own education-based nonprofit organization focused on incorporating the performing arts in behavior and ELA/Math strategies.I have had the pleasure of serving two years (going on my third) with the national Americorps organization, City Year. City Year is an education-based non-profit organization that is committed to closing the achievement gap by focusing on three critical areas: attendance, behavior and coursework. We are committed to providing students with a quality education and excellent programs that foster academic growth and social skills. City Year has given me the opportunity to provide specialized academic and socio-emotional support for students ranging in the ages of 9-18 from low-income communities. As a corps member with City Year Los Angeles, I served at a predominately Hispanic and Latino/a high school and executed high quality ELA and Math lesson plans for a focus list consisting of 15 tenth grade students (some English Language Learners) and implemented whole school programming for over 300 students. I worked with a team of 20 individuals and coordinated college fairs, academic advising workshops, scholastic reading nights and math carnivals to support school programming. In an effort to reduce the growing number of disciplinary occurrences, I developed and facilitated 10 bi-weekly socio-emotional behavior management workshops that featured a lieu of motivational speakers and therapeutic practices that were followed by a 15% decrease in referrals for a span of two months. As a Team Leader with City Year San Antonio, I led a team of 8 first-year corps members through their service at a k-8 academy and serve as a liaison between school administration and community partners. I maintained an extensive database of corps members and student data tracking over 80 students' attendance, behavior, and coursework performance. Additionally to monitoring progress, I attended weekly meetings with staff to discuss school climate, academic interventions, whole school programming and strategic ways to meet our district goals. In light of having a corps member resign, I was given the added responsibility of tutoring and providing specialized support to 25 fourth grade ELA and Math students for 20 hours a week which has resulted in 75% of the students experiencing 5 to 10 point gains in their course grades.I am passionate about learning and developing youth and will ensure that your student receives specialized and tailored support.

Math and science can be frustrating and intimidating to many people, and my objective is to help you overcome any hurdles your may have in these subjects in order to achieve your academic and career goals.Having received my Bachelors of Science in Physics from California State University, Long Beach, I have a passion for science and math which I love to transmit to other people, whether they be curious laymen, fellow students, or tutees. While earning my degree I had the opportunity of taking part in undergrad research at my university, and the privilege of participating in a student internship program at Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. This experience has given me some perspective in appreciating the scope and possibilities in science. But while doing so I have also practiced my other passion--instruction and education in this field and related subjects by working as a tutor for high school students in the subjects of math, science, and in test preparation. I also have experience in a job after graduation as a tutor of university students in college level courses, from remedial math and science classes to more advanced second and third year physics courses. After several years working as a laboratory technician at a fuel cell research and design company, I am returning to this latter passion as I pursue a teaching credential program at the University of Dominguez Hills. In my view, the best approach to teaching is not one that just instructs you in procedures by rote memorization and repetition (although these may be necessary and useful in achieving success), but also one that guides you to acquire the needed tools and critical thinking skills to not only learn the procedures needed for math, science, or standardized tests, but to also hopefully understand the subject sufficiently to develop your own techniques in many different situations, or to possibly apply them in your area your interest. This is achieved by identifying your level of understanding, making sure you know or learn any needed background information, and to also sometimes explain and give you an insight into the motivation for the formulas, techniques or procedures pertaining to the subject at hand, and relating them to different examples and applications in real life in order to make them less abstract. In whichever approach I may take, in the end my aim is to demystify and make these subjects less intimidating to you, since I more than likely have gone through similar frustrations in my education.
