I am majoring in Biological Sciences (with a concentration in ecology/biology), and also have a minor in French. I have been a tutor on and off for many years, working with students in the 6th-12th grade range, along with several college level students. I love helping people succeed in difficult areas of study, like math or science. I firmly believe anyone can do well in these courses! Not just the "smart" kids.
When it comes to math, I think that it can be difficult to succeed in a school system that only favors certain types of learning. This puts some students at an unfair disadvantage. Everyone can be good at math! It simply depends on how they're being taught the material. Currently, I tutor in Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Statistics and Geometry at all levels. My approach to teaching math is to really take it slow, and to never rush my students. Based on a combination of what I see in frequent tutoring sessions and what I review in completed supplementary homework, I will adapt my lessons to better fit the student- whether that means spending extra time on a certain topic, or moving forward to newer material.
Science, just like math, tends to be a subject that can be very frustrating! Similar to math, the way science is presented in a lot of classrooms isn't a good fit for comprehension for a lot of students. I utilize the same approach as I do with math when it comes to science- take it slow, and really evaluate how my student is doing. I am passionate and love science, and I want to help students find that same understanding and appreciation for it. I currently tutor in Ecology, Chemistry, and Biology.
