ACCUPLACER Arithmetic Tutor • +49 Subjects
I am a PhD student at Northeastern University getting a degree in population health. I graduated from George Washington University, with a master's in public health and did my undergraduate degree at the University of Richmond. I love to teach and hope to eventually teach at a university and do research.I have always enjoyed helping others learned. When I was little, I used to make my sister play teacher with me (she was always the student, poor thing). Now I enjoy tutoring students of all ages in a variety of subjects. My favorite subject to tutor is math because, unlike English, the rules always stay the same. I also enjoy tutoring for both the ACTs and the SATs. It is great to see a student's scores improve as we work on practice tests and the different skills that they need.In my free time I love to travel. In Oct. of 2014 I left the country for the first time to travel to Zambia, Africa to visit a friend living there. It was an incredible trip. We sat in the devil's pool at Victoria Falls (I recommend looking up a photo). We also went on a safari and had many other great adventures. Since then I have traveled to Italy (also wonderful) and hope to do some more international traveling soon.I also enjoy working with my hands, crocheting, sewing, knitting, and especially cooking. I read when I have the time, and love to listen to audio books in the car.

AP Music Theory Tutor • +21 Subjects
I believe that every student has great potential. I used to be a public school teacher in Anaheim, CA and now I'm a homeschooling mom in Oklahoma! I teach my children at home as well as classes at our homeschool co-op each week. At home, I use a classical method of education which emphasizes reading, writing, research, Latin, Debate and more which gives students great critical thinking skills. What I have learned from all different teaching experiences is that students who are struggling probably didn't get to be taught the right way--the way that matches how they think and learn. A good teacher should be able to recognize when a certain approach isn't working and then alter or completely change the approach. I can work with anyone who really gives a good effort. My main strengths are Language Arts (which includes grammar, writing, reading, spelling and everything else in our English language), Math, up to pre-Algebra, and music theory, including A.P. Music Theory for high schoolers looking to major in music in college. Overall, I try to instill the concepts of "how to learn" and "how to think critically" instead of "what to learn." With that perspective, you can begin to pursue subjects that you love, and you can learn anything! My degrees and credentials are B. A. Music in Applied Piano and Church Music; CA teaching credential (which I have now let expire); M. M. Choral Conducting. As stated above, I teach 13-14 year olds at our homeschool co-op. We study Math, Logic, Latin, Writing, Science Research, and Debate. We prepare for a mock trial every year.

10th Grade Reading Tutor • +79 Subjects
As a tutor, I not only ensure my students make the grade, I nurture their academic self-esteem and innate intellectual curiosity. I do this by focusing on what my students know before turning to what they do not know. I take the time to understand and mentor my student’s particular gifts, using their individual strengths to conquer their individual academic challenges and become confident, creative, lifetime learners. By encouraging questions and providing hands-on interactive lessons which consist of substantial modeling (“see one”), guided practice (“do one”), and checking for understanding (“teach one”), I ensure my students understand the “why” rather than merely memorize the “that.”I am “HQ” (Highly Qualified) certified to teach Social Studies for grades 7-12. I currently teach a sophomore level ethics class at St. Edwards University. I taught several classes at The University of Texas at Austin as a Doctoral Candidate, where I also earned my M.A. in Philosophy. At the University of Southern California, I earned my B.A. with Departmental Honors along with the Discovery Scholar’s award for excellence in independent research. I have been tutoring and teaching for eleven years, with a primary emphasis on developing my students’ writing and critical thinking skills. In Renaissance Man fashion, I pursue well-roundedness. I let my imagination run free by playing World of Warcraft, watching Star Trek, and reading fantasy novels like The Chronicles of Narnia and Harry Potter. I support my physical health by practicing yoga, camping, and experimenting in the kitchen with healthy, delicious, recipes. I soothe my soul by spending time with my family and friends, singing in my church’s choir and curling up with my husband and four cats to enjoy a relaxing evening at home.
