I am an international English and humanities teacher from the United States. My career in teaching began in the New York City Public Schools teaching immigrant children to speak English. Coming from a family of teachers and scholars who were also immigrants, this seemed a natural pursuit. From an early age I read deeply in classic literature and American history and took a strong interest in discussions and debate. Modern history, current events, military affairs and public policy are keen interests of mine. At university, I attained degrees in history, teaching English as a second language and educational administration. Close to my affinity for learning is my love for sports: golf, tennis, biking and the active life. People describe me as learned, friendly, witty and compassionate. Learning with laughter, participation and purpose is my basic approach to education. Through teaching Cambridge, AP and IB English and humanities courses internationally, I have changed and gown professionally. The core of my being is a love of the life of the mind. I find education to be a continuing discovery of truth, development of pragmatic skills and relationship building.

Teaching is my passion. I was fortunate enough to discover this upon graduating from college, and every job I have had since involves teaching of some kind. I always wanted to be an English teacher, and I realized my dream in 2006. Since then, I have come to find that my favorite type of work is helping students achieve a level of reading comprehension that helps them not only understand critical passages, but also real-world materials. I think in English classes, we assume that students do always get the main idea, but as I keep teaching, I realize that reading critically is a skill we must work on. I am constantly sharpening my skills in helping students become better readers, and I am excited about the prospects of working with new students, as they help me learn even more about my teaching.

I have graduated from Baylor University with a degree in Chemistry and often helped other students with subjects that were easy for me. I know it can be frustrating for students so helping them understand their subjects and gain confidence is what makes me like to tutor. I have also been a volunteer mentor/tutor here in Atlanta since I graduated college and look forward to helping more students. When I tutor, I am careful not to do the work for the student, I help fix problem areas and guide the student to the right answer. Learning can be difficult but I want to take the frustration out of learning.

I am an undergraduate student at Washington University in St. Louis majoring in Neurobiology (B.S.) and minoring in Jazz Studies and Biomedical Physics. While I tutor many areas within math, science, and standardized test preparation, I am most passionate about biology and algebra because of my interest in these subjects as well as my belief in their importance. I have always been the friend who fellow peers go to for guidance with work and because of this, I have learned the value of patience, communication, and empathy in the education process. I firmly believe that every subject I tutor is vital in a student's path to success and a greater understanding of the world, and because of this, I will fully commit myself to making sure my tutees have a solid grasp of the concepts being taught as well as the ability to apply them to real-world situations.When I'm not doing schoolwork or tutoring, I enjoy listening to music, hiking, playing sports, spending time with my dogs, and watching funny T.V. shows!

I also have extensive experience working with learning disabilities including dyslexia, ADHD, dysgraphia, and language processing disorders.I have a Bachelor's degree in English from Ohio State University, a Master's in Secondary English (6-12) from Kennesaw State University, and I have a Specialist of Education degree from Kennesaw State University in Instructional Technology.I can help you use technology effectively and provide you with online resources to support learning.I believe students who participate in sports and extracurricular activities get more out of their school experience than students who are not as engaged in their school community. Additionally, I tutor students who require language arts assistance. This year, I am teaching Senior Honors British Literature and Junior Honors American Literature. The previous two years, I taught senior AP Language and Composition which is my favorite class to teach. I also received certification in AP Literature.
