As a Washington University in St. Louis mechanical engineering senior, I have vast tutoring experience. Starting in high school I founded a tutoring club to help struggling students, and also tutored high-level math lane students on the side. After that, I went on to work at Mathnasium, where I tutored groups of up to 5 students at a time in math ranging from 1st grade to 8th grade. I am very familiar with how to motivate students who are bored or dont feel like doing work! As a freshman in college, I also volunteered by teaching reading and math to underprivileged students through Each One Teach One.In college, I went on to be employed as an engineering tutor for over 50% of my high level mechanical engineering courses. I have been a teaching assistant for Circuits, Mechanics 3, and Heat Transfer courses. I am confident in classes such as Calc 3, Physics I, CAD hand drafting or PTC Creo CAD, Differential Equations, Introduction to Electronics Circuits, Engineering Math A & B, Mechanics 1, 2, & 3, Materials Science, Thermodynamics, Design of Thermal Systems, Heat Transfer, Vibrations, Dynamics and Vibrations. I can help with full-length lab reports, as well as other upper level division mechanical engineering classes.I attended one of the most rigorous high schools in California, taking the highest level math lane classes offered each year. I am very confident in my abilities to teach or tutor in difficult Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Calculus classes, as well as math subjects below that level.Outside of tutoring, I am working towards an entrepreneurship minor. I am currently the COO and CFO of two early-stage medical device startups, and I will be employed as a healthcare consultant after the upcoming summer. I working towards an MBA. I have a passionate for dance, and performed in hip hop, Latin jazz, and Bollywood performances throughout college.Everyone has the potential to be whoever they want to be, if they put in the hard work. I motivate my students to find their own drive, becoming independent, hardworking and passionate about what they do. Each student is unique, and once I figure out what they find fun, I incorporate it into my teaching style. My ultimate goal is to give you the most out of each tutoring session.

Math and science can be frustrating and intimidating to many people, and my objective is to help you overcome any hurdles your may have in these subjects in order to achieve your academic and career goals.Having received my Bachelors of Science in Physics from California State University, Long Beach, I have a passion for science and math which I love to transmit to other people, whether they be curious laymen, fellow students, or tutees. While earning my degree I had the opportunity of taking part in undergrad research at my university, and the privilege of participating in a student internship program at Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. This experience has given me some perspective in appreciating the scope and possibilities in science. But while doing so I have also practiced my other passion--instruction and education in this field and related subjects by working as a tutor for high school students in the subjects of math, science, and in test preparation. I also have experience in a job after graduation as a tutor of university students in college level courses, from remedial math and science classes to more advanced second and third year physics courses. After several years working as a laboratory technician at a fuel cell research and design company, I am returning to this latter passion as I pursue a teaching credential program at the University of Dominguez Hills. In my view, the best approach to teaching is not one that just instructs you in procedures by rote memorization and repetition (although these may be necessary and useful in achieving success), but also one that guides you to acquire the needed tools and critical thinking skills to not only learn the procedures needed for math, science, or standardized tests, but to also hopefully understand the subject sufficiently to develop your own techniques in many different situations, or to possibly apply them in your area your interest. This is achieved by identifying your level of understanding, making sure you know or learn any needed background information, and to also sometimes explain and give you an insight into the motivation for the formulas, techniques or procedures pertaining to the subject at hand, and relating them to different examples and applications in real life in order to make them less abstract. In whichever approach I may take, in the end my aim is to demystify and make these subjects less intimidating to you, since I more than likely have gone through similar frustrations in my education.

AP Spanish Literature and Culture Tutor • +22 Subjects

Over the years, the biggest problem I faced like many of my own private clients have, is that sometimes students don't know what the instructor is expecting from them. This can occur in any classroom and at any level. Students may be referring to unknown expectations of a teacher or a professor about a particular quiz, exam, midterm, essay or even the primary goal of the academic year. My job is to guide each student towards identifying and achieving what the instructor is looking for, and ultimately comprehending those difficult demands. I try to bridge the gap between the student and teacher. My primary goal is to lead to clarity - not further any confusion, difficulty, or frustration. Learning a language is hard enough. I simply guide the student by showing him or her new techniques to study and methods to learn about the Spanish language. This is turn gives the student the ability to achieve his or her individual goals. Moreover, the previous tension and confusion felt by the student begins to lessen with each session. As a personal tutor I hope to advance the development of a student's initial knowledge of the Spanish language into a solid foundation.

Graduate of University of California, Berkeley, the premier public university of the U.S. and probably the world, I had studied history and English from some of the most renown historians and literature professors in academia. There I learned the art and rigor of research, reading, writing, and reflective thinking. This December, I will finish a MA at San Francisco State University in English composition, focusing in-depth on all types of writing and how to teach writing to K-12 and university students and business professionals. As a graduate student, I taught a university-level writing-intensive course to freshmen, the type of composition writing course that the AP English Language and Composition and AP English Literature and Composition exams prepare high school students to study for and get college credit with a high score on the AP exam.I firmly believe that my passion and expertise in writing, literature, and history will help students reach their potential and improve their knowledge, skills, and their passion even if they are not yet engaged with the humanities and social sciences. Knowing many teachers and professors, I also firmly believe that students fall into the cracks of education frequently because of ill-prepared teachers, an overworked system that demands too much time from them without adequate pay and respect, and because most graduate schools of education do not adequately train teachers with evidence-based scholarship and give them the tools they need to succeed. I firmly believe that I and Varsity Tutors can fill this gap in education and in a student's learning by supplementing what schools cannot provide though teachers and professors are very passionate and heartfelt and genuinely care about their students. This is the unique role of the tutor.I can tutor most writing-related courses: AP English courses, AP History courses, SAT Reasoning (reading and writing), high school and university-level courses in writing, English, and history, and even business-related courses for professionals or business majors. In graduate school, I focused on grammar, style, and different types of genres: essays, business writing, grant writing, technical writing, long-form types of writing, and even creative writing. My interests outside my professional life still feed into and enrich my job. I am an aspiring writer in creative nonfiction, novels, short stories, and essays, and I am moving into technical writing with also a deep knowledge of technical subjects that are in high-demand in Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area. In the summer I teach physics to 8th graders and I worked at the Exploratorium, teaching science to visitors. I am unusual I believe for a humanities person in that I also took electives in physics, mathematics, and chemistry in college, which gives me the confidence and desire to move into technical writing.

I will be graduating from the University of California, San Diego this June (2014). I will be receiving my Bachelor of Arts with Latin and Departmental Honors in Literature and Writing, with focuses in education, French Literature, Literatures of the World in English, and fiction writing. I have four years of tutoring and teaching experience at UC San Diego's Office of Academic Support and Instructional Services (OASIS), both in teaching undergraduate writing workshops and working with both undergraduates and high school students in one-on-one tutoring. I have also worked extensively with ESL students and students from inner-city high schools. I tutor a broad range of subjects, including argumentative and research writing, composition, reading comprehension, beginning French, stylistics and grammar, and literature. I especially love tutoring in argumentative writing and reading comprehension, which is why I enjoy working with students on SAT Critical Reading and Writing and GRE Verbal and Writing. Watching students develop critical skills and confidence in these subjects is the best part of my job!In my years working as a teacher and tutor, I've noticed that a student's confidence in a subject is often his or her main gateway to success. As a result, I work hard to both develop that confidence and the skills required to perform well both in class and on standardized tests. I also have a dynamic teaching and tutoring style that keeps students engaged and understanding the material. I understand that for most students, school is sometimes boring; luckily, I've been trained in how to keep them interested through both connecting to my students and involving them in their learning process. I do this by structuring my lessons around discussions that do not rely only on me just giving them information (unless it is necessary), but instead help them practice the critical thinking that leads them to coming up with solutions themselves. This has proven to be more effective than the "lecture" or "knowledge dump" methods, since students can then use their learning in other subjects and essay prompts. I guide my students in how to think; I don't tell them what to think.Outside of my academic work and interests, I love running (I've run track for eight years), hiking San Diego's beautiful trails, and painting.
