BA Cornell University • Juris Doctor, Law University of Chicago Law School

I am a second year law student at the University of Chicago who hails from the San Francisco Bay Area! I tutor the SAT, ESL, and Spanish. I was an AVID tutor in high school, and after college I taught an ESL class and tutored a high school student in Spanish. In law school, I am involved with the Lawyers in the Classroom program. My tutoring philosophy is based on listening to students work through problems and helping them to spot their confusions or incorrect assumptions. I believe students learn much better when they aren't simply told the right answer or right reasoning; they need to get there on their own.

Anna's MD/MBA path through Northwestern's Feinberg and Kellogg programs means she's spent years toggling between dense scientific literature and business case analysis — the exact mix of reading speed and quantitative precision the PSAT demands across both its Evidence-Based Reading and math sections. Her 36 ACT and 1590 SAT confirm she's mastered standardized test architecture at the highest level, and she uses that experience to teach students how to spot the PSAT's recurring trap-answer patterns in command-of-evidence questions. I am an undergraduate at Washington University in St. Louis majoring in Philosophy-Neuroscience-Psychology on the Premed track. I have two years worth of experience peer tutoring. I feel the most confident tutoring ACT preparation. During my time as a high school student, I worked from an ACT score of 25 to a 36 and developed many effective strategies that I will tailor to the students I tutor and understand the ins and outs of the test. In addition to working with high school peers, I have also enjoyed teaching private piano and violin lessons for elementary students. Helping people knock down their roadblocks is a passion of mine. Standardized tests and basic education may feel removed from our passions, but developing those foundations are essential for opening up opportunities and becoming capable of taking on our pursuits.

I'm referring to math, of course, but I didn't always like the subject. Until about age 16, I thought of math as a boring, mind-numbing process of blindly memorizing formulas and then forgetting them after the test, but a series of wonderful teachers showed me the truth. I had thought that everything in math was invented arbitrarily just to torture students, but actually it all made sense in a deep way. When I caught a glimpse of what math really was, I found it irresistible and I ended up majoring in math in college at UChicago. I'm currently a Master's student in Computer Science at NYU.

I am a math tutor who is currently attending the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and majoring in Environmental Engineering. I have been tutoring math for over four years, both at Fenwick High School (where I attended) as a peer tutor and with Mathnasium. I teach Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, Pre-Calc, and Calculus 1 + 2, and I also cover all sections of the ACT. I prefer to take an involved approach to tutoring -- that is, rather than have my students sit and listen to me talk, I prefer to actively engage them with problems. I believe that the best way to learn is to do, and I love to use this philosophy in my tutoring. However, I am willing to adapt to whatever style my students prefer -- if my students learn best from lectures, then lectures will be what we do. Working with clients to discover the way they learn best is one of my favorite parts of tutoring.

I am exploring my creativity by pursuing a double major in Asian Languages and Cultures with a focus in Korean, studying abroad in South Korea as a Benjamin A. Gilman Scholar, leading workshops that teach 3D printing and CAD for undergraduate students as the president of 3D4E, advocating for the first-generation and low-income student community as the Outreach Chair of the Quest+ Scholars Network, and getting involved with the Society of Women Engineers' outreach committee. I currently hold a work-study position as an administrative clerical aide in the Institute of Sustainability and Energy at Northwestern and was an undergraduate researcher in the John Rogers Lab. As I look forward with aspirations of applying to graduate school, areas of research in biomedical engineering and biotechnology that I am particularly interested in include biomaterials, pharmaceuticals, and drug delivery systems. Outside of the classroom, I enjoy learning on my own and sharing my experience and knowledge with my peers and other students. I hope to make use of my experiences with academics and learning in high school and so far in my undergraduate career in order to effectively tutor students who may be experiencing the same struggles in learning that I also experienced.

Jessica's economics coursework at UChicago means she lives in the kind of data-heavy, graph-laden problem sets that mirror the PSAT's quantitative sections — but her 1590 SAT and 36 ACT show she's just as dangerous on the verbal side. She teaches students to treat the Writing and Language section like an editing exercise, reading each passage for argument flow first and then catching grammar errors in context rather than hunting for them rule by rule.

I've been working with students for over seven years, from middle school all the way through college, across subjects like math, calculus, statistics, linear algebra, chemistry, and physics, with a lot of SAT and ACT prep mixed in. My background is perhaps a little unconventional. I have two bachelor's degrees, one in Engineering and one in Communication Studies, plus a Master's in Design. That combination means I can guide you through challenging technical material and communicate it in a way that is easy to grasp. What I care most about is helping students get to a place where they don't need me anymore. I know that sounds like a strange thing for a tutor to say, but I think it's the right goal. I'm not here to walk you through steps to copy down. I want you to understand why something works, because that's what holds up under pressure, on a test you haven't seen before. If you're ready to ace that test or prove that theorem that's been bugging you, reach out and let's work together

Varsity Tutors matches Rockford students with expert PSAT tutors for 1-on-1 instruction. We pair each student with a tutor based on their specific needs, learning style, and goals.

Whether you need homework help, exam prep, or want to get ahead, our PSAT tutors are ready to help.

Common challenges include gaps from earlier material, difficulty with specific concepts, and trouble applying learning to new problems. These issues can snowball quickly in PSAT.

A tutor identifies where you're stuck, fills in gaps, and provides targeted practice. The 1-on-1 format means you get help exactly where you need it.

Tutors work with your student's actual coursework—homework assignments, class notes, and upcoming tests. This keeps tutoring directly relevant to what's happening in the classroom.

When you share information about your student's school and curriculum, we can match you with a tutor who has relevant experience.

All tutors complete background checks, credential verification, and teaching evaluation. Many of our PSAT tutors hold advanced degrees or have years of teaching experience.

You can review tutor profiles to find someone with the right background for your student's level and needs.

Many students see improved grades within a few weeks, along with better understanding of PSAT concepts and more confidence tackling challenging material.

Tutors track progress and adjust their approach to ensure continued improvement.

Most students benefit from 1-2 sessions per week. More frequent sessions help if your student is significantly behind or has an important exam coming up.

Your tutor can recommend a schedule based on your student's specific situation and goals.

Tutoring is purchased in packages of hours, with rates varying by tutor experience. Varsity Tutors offers several options to fit different budgets and needs.

You can discuss pricing during your consultation to find what works best.

Your tutor will assess where your student is, discuss goals, and start working on priority areas. Most students bring current homework or upcoming test material to focus on.
