I am a junior studying Writing for Screen and Television at the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts. For the past two spring semesters I worked as a CollegeSpring Mentor, tutoring Green Dot Charter high school juniors for the SAT and teaching them predatory skills for college. In addition to my experience tutoring for the SAT, as a screenwriting major I most enjoy teaching my favorite subject, English. I love showing students the power language endows upon them to communicate their ideas and beliefs with others. I believe every student deserves the chance to succeed and to try to capitalize on their strengths while encouraging them to improve in areas they may traditionally find challenging. Endowing a student with confidence in themselves through patience and support is the best way not only to improve academic performance, but also transform them into lifelong learners. I try to share not only my passion for knowledge with students, but also my love of sports (football, baseball, and softball), action films, and global affairs. Seeing students not only improve academically but also show improved confidence and happiness is the most rewarding part of my job.

MS The Juilliard School • BA La Sierra University
1+ Years Tutoring

I am currently a doctoral student at the University of Southern California, and I completed earlier degrees at the Juilliard School in New York and at La Sierra University in Riverside, CA. At La Sierra as an undergrad, I received dual degrees with honors in violin and mathematics, both of which have led me to teaching opportunities. In tutoring either field, I enjoy the constant adaptation of finding an approach suited to each student that will help them achieve their goals. Both mathematics and music are often considered to be innate talents, but being able to assist students of any background in gaining proficiency is an exciting opportunity for me and a fulfilling one when it happens. Beyond mathematics, I also welcome tutoring opportunities in Chemistry and especially Physics, with it's mathematical foundation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Score improvement varies based on your starting point and commitment level, but students typically see meaningful gains within 8-12 weeks of focused preparation. Many students improve by 100-200 points on the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section through targeted instruction that addresses their specific weak areas—whether that's vocabulary, reading comprehension, or grammar concepts. The key is identifying exactly where you're losing points and developing strategies tailored to your learning style.

The biggest hurdles are typically pacing (finishing all passages and questions within the time limit), vocabulary in context (understanding words as they're used in passages rather than memorizing definitions), and recognizing subtle grammatical errors in the Writing section. Many students also struggle with the inference-based reading questions that require understanding the author's tone and purpose rather than just locating facts. A tutor can help you develop specific strategies for each question type and build the reading speed and accuracy needed to manage the section's demands.

An effective plan typically spans 8-12 weeks and includes diagnostic testing to identify weak areas, targeted skill-building for specific question types, timed practice with real SAT passages, and review of mistakes to prevent repeated errors. Most students benefit from 2-3 tutoring sessions per week combined with independent practice between sessions. Spacing out your practice over time (rather than cramming) helps with retention, and regular full-length practice tests every 2-3 weeks give you a realistic sense of your progress and stamina.

That depends on your diagnostic results—some students struggle more with reading comprehension and pacing through passages, while others find grammar and syntax more challenging. A tutor can analyze your practice test results to determine where you're losing the most points and prioritize accordingly. However, most students benefit from balanced attention to both areas since they're equally weighted, and the strategies you develop in one section often transfer to the other.

Test anxiety often stems from feeling unprepared or uncertain about question formats, so building confidence through repeated practice with real SAT passages is one of the most effective remedies. A tutor can also teach you specific timing strategies and pacing techniques that reduce the panic of running out of time, plus help you develop a pre-test routine and mental strategies for staying focused. Practicing under timed conditions regularly helps your brain get comfortable with the pressure, so test day feels like just another practice session.

Your first session typically includes a diagnostic assessment—either a full-length SAT Verbal section or targeted questions across reading and writing—to pinpoint your specific strengths and weaknesses. Your tutor will review your results with you, discuss your target score and timeline, and create a personalized study plan that addresses your unique challenges. You'll also learn about the test format, question types, and initial strategies before diving into focused skill-building in future sessions.

Most students benefit from taking 4-6 full-length practice tests spaced throughout their study period—roughly one every 2-3 weeks as you progress through your preparation. Early practice tests help identify weak areas, mid-study tests track your improvement and build stamina, and final tests simulate actual test conditions and build confidence. Between full tests, targeted practice with specific question types helps you apply what you're learning without the time pressure of a full section.

Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors who specialize in SAT Verbal preparation and have experience working with students in Long Beach. When you get matched with a tutor, you can discuss your specific goals, current score, target score, and any particular challenges (like reading speed or grammar concepts). Most students find that a tutor who understands the SAT's specific question formats and can explain strategies clearly makes a huge difference in both score improvement and test confidence.
