I hold a bachelor's degree in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. That academic experience combined with my many years in the IT industry have given me a comprehensive understanding of math and science and I simply love passing that knowledge on to others. My main area of tutoring has been focused on helping middle school students with the journey through 7th grade and into Selective Enrollment high schools in Chicago. I know from experience with my own sons and tutoring other young people how demanding and stressful this process can be. I am also familiar with high school course work, having guided both my sons in their math and science classes, enabling them to gain a deeper understanding of the meaning and utility behind abstract concepts by drawing simpler analogies and providing real life examples.I take this same approach when tutoring, instilling self-confidence in students to help them succeed in mastering each new challenge presented. I frequently encourage them to come up with a rough estimate of the answer before delving into formulas and calculations, instructing them to think about the problem in a logical manner first. With an easy-going style, I strive to make students relaxed and comfortable, allowing them to better concentrate on the task at hand and be more receptive to learning. My excellent communication and social skills are invaluable in tailoring my approach to each individual.I consider myself a life-long learner and enjoy pursuing many other interests, including: soccer and disc golf, solving crossword puzzles, reading and watching good science fiction and mystery, cooking, woodworking, kayaking, sailing, photography, card games, writing and debugging software, and occasionally playing select PS4 video games.

My academic training, passion and talent for interdisciplinary research and teaching, specifically in Literature, American History, World History, Women's History and Performance Studies were honed in the American Studies graduate program at the College of William and Mary, where I earned the Ph.D. I also hold the M.A. in Women's History from Sarah Lawrence College (Bronxville, NY) and am a graduate of the University of Missouri (B.A. English Literature and Linguistics).A crucial component of my educational experience has included international travel, sparked by experience as a foreign exchange student both to France and Germany. In college, I minored in German. Subsequently, I also enjoy tutoring in German. As an academic, my scholarship has taken me to over seventeen countries, including Austria, Brazil, Denmark, Holland, South Africa, and many, many trips to France and Germany. For the past fifteen years, I have enjoyed a plethora of teaching experiences from academic posts, to tutoring and consultant work--and even to adult courses for non-matriculating students.Beyond the college liberal arts classroom detailed below, I have also garnered high school teaching experience in Manhattan's private, progressive schools. For example, I was a sick-leave replacement faculty member in U.S. history in the Upper School at The Calhoun School (2006), where I taught eleventh grade high school students. The keystone experience of 11th grade curriculum at Calhoun is an interdisciplinary research paper, which earns credit it both a student's U.S. History course and their English course. Drawing on my interdisciplinary experience, I successfully guided students through research skills, literary analysis and the tools requisite for historical perspective. Another example includes my experience working in New York City public schools, K-12, as a Curriculum/Professional Development consultant with Ventures Education Systems Corporation (VESC). As a consultant for this national school reform and professional development organization, I designed and delivered workshops in balanced literarcy, test preparation and critical thinking. I evaluated curriculum for elementary/middle school language arts and social studies and developed teaching guides with objectives, essential questions, activities, ongoing assessments, and state standards alignment. For the past several summers, I offered SAT prep tutoring at Mini Ivy in Lower Manhattan, working with students in the age range of 13-18, primarily on preparation for the SAT but also in essay writing.I have taught literature, history, jazz studies and women's studies at a plethora of the nation's ivy league universities and best liberal arts colleges, including: Columbia University (NY); Sarah Lawrence College (NY); Hunter College (NY); and Brown University (RI).

Hello! My name is Malik Blackman and I am a second year Mechanical Engineering student at the University of Illinois at Chicago. I chose to become a Mechanical Engineer because of my passion for mathematics and physics, which stemmed from a very young age. My mother instilled a strong work ethic and zeal inside of me even before I ever stepped foot into a classroom. Because of these foundational skills I have been able to excel academically. During my high school career I was ranked first during my freshman year, and ended in the top 10% of my graduating class. After my first year at the University of Illinois at Chicago, I received at 3.30 GPA. In addition, I have worked as a Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory Intern for the past three summers, starting in the summer of 2014. Working at the lab has allowed me to connect with some of the best engineers and physicists in the world. In addition it has allowed me to gain insight on what a real-world in the field mechanical engineer does, as i was given projects that were related to my field of study. I would like to utilize all of my knowledge and resources to help YOU succeed!

I received my Bachelor of Arts degree, with a double major in English and Spanish, as well as a minor in Psychology, from Lawrence University. After graduation, I returned for another year to continue my education, studying Education in their teacher certification program. I completed my student teaching semester at a public high school in Wisconsin, teaching Communication Arts and Creative Writing. Subsequently, I took a job teaching in the inner city of Chicago, at first taking over for a maternity leave as the 5th grade teacher in a self-contained classroom. I stayed on at the school for the following two years, taking on the position of 8th grade homeroom teacher and junior high English teacher. I taught 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Reading, Writing, and Language Arts. I have helped all of my students improve their reading fluency and comprehension, their grammar and writing skills, and even their public speaking confidence. I have helped them develop a voice of self-expression through writing, and have helped them enjoy and connect to a variety of genres of literature. Calling on both my experience and my passions, I tutor the following subjects: English, Essay Editing, Grammar and Mechanics, Literature, Reading, Writing, Test Prep, ACT English, ACT Reading, and ACT Writing.Outside of academia, I love to play with my puppy, practice yoga, go for walks, and paint. I look forward to getting to know what each of my student's interests, passions, and hobbies are, so that I can make the learning more relevant and real for him or her. I believe that making personal connections with learning is the best way to make new knowledge and skills stick as well as to make it a positive experience. For example, I had a group of very disinterested 8th grade boys in my class last year who I inspired to be passionate about poetic techniques. I used their passion for basketball and their passion for rap music, and developed a unit that had them begging for more lessons and acing all of my tests! Learning can be more fun than many people realize! I would love to help you to not only turn your struggles into a success story, but also to find passion and joy in the process as well!

I am an educator with decades of teaching experience ranging from 4th grade through university teaching. I have demonstrated a best practice and research based model for learning that is effective in improving academic achievement at any level. I am interested in tutoring all ages. In the tutoring session, I use a planning backward approach, first identifying the learning target to be accomplished during the session. The second step, we discuss and assess what has already been mastered, and the third step is the teaching and learning process, the tutoring, to achieve the learning target set at the beginning of the session. We will end the session with checking if we hit the set learning target. This model works at every level, from a 3rd grader building reading skills or improving computation skills to a graduate student planning to write a review of the literature for a dissertation. I tutor children of all ages, high school students, undergraduate, and graduate students. My preferred subjects are essay writing, research writing, editing, composition writing, reading skill development, literature studies, history essay writing, application essays, and test prep skill development.
