Session Summaries by Physics Tutors

Concord, CA Physics tutoring
Today was a longer session with the student, focusing entirely on chapter 26 and his quiz on Thursday. We reviewed half of the homework problems targeting chapter 26, specifically the material on fields due to wires, magnetic dipoles, and Ampere's law. We also developed a study guide to help him prepare for exams. My concern is that he might not be reviewing the material, which makes it harder for him to remember. Hopefully he can correct that and realize the importance of reviewing at home.

The student and I worked on homework problems from Chapter 12, involving static equilibrium. We focused on how to calculate all of the net torques, and forces in both x and y directions, and then setting those equal to zero in order to develop systems of equations to solve for unknown variables.

The student and I had a great session. The entirety of our session was spent talking about force diagrams and defining the net force equations for said diagrams. He seemed to be getting a better grasp on the concept. However, he's still struggling with how to work with the trig functions to solve for the x and y components of a vector. I suggested working through the problems that we did in a previous session again in order to better understand it.

We started reviewing for the physics test on forces. We went through several problems using friction force, and we practiced summing the forces on an object in the x- and y-directions. We reviewed finding the acceleration of an object given its initial velocity, final velocity, and total distance traveled as well as using the displacement, time, and initial velocity. We went through all three of Newton's Laws of Motion and how they apply in different situations. The student is doing well drawing all of the forces on an object and determining whether the sum of the forces in a particular direction is zero or mass*acceleration. She is also doing well working with the formulas for different types of specific forces such as friction force and weight or gravitational force.

We covered some topics in Newtonian mechanics, such as calculating net forces, force components, force diagrams, etc. The student seemed to be able to grasp the material fairly well, but admitted that he wasn't too clear with what he was learning in class. We are going to work more on his skills in determining what the problem is asking of him so that he can better approach it.
