This class is designed to help you become a stronger student and to prepare you for success in a four-year college and focuses on the WICOR strategies of Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading. The AVID course you will take is based on the growth mindset. It includes understanding intelligence and ability not as characteristics you’re simply born with, but as skills to be developed and improved over the course of a lifetime. Students will recognize that hard work and motivation are often more important in determining success than natural abilities; AVID encourages students to take ownership of their own education, rather than sitting back and letting their education “happen to them,” Students interested in AVID must go through an application process that includes both a written application and an interview. Being in AVID in middle school is not an automatic acceptance at the high school level; Middle school AVID is not required to join AVID at the high school level. Students interested in AVID should see Chris Martin in counseling to apply. \[E312X\] AVID Peer Tutor AVID tutors work to cultivate the organization, reading, writing, collaboration, and inquiry skills central to the AVID curriculum. Tutors must be comfortable leading small groups during projects, Socratic seminars, tutoring sessions, etc. They should be able to work in areas outside of their comfort zones. The primary focus is academics, but note that strong candidates should serve as a good role model and “big brother” or “big sister” as well. There is a mandatory training session prior to the class. Tutors will be working in AVID grades 9 - 11. Peer Mentors receive a Pass/Fail grade. * * *

Students will learn how music is constructed via: notes/scales, note/rest values, meter, rhythm, melody, harmony, form, and style. This course is a prerequisite to taking IB Music, and students planning to complete an IB Diploma must take this course sophomore year. This is so that the students will have the requisite knowledge in order to complete the IB Music Portfolio during their junior and senior years.

IB Music is taught in conjunction with Wind Ensemble. Students who wish to take IB Music as their Group 6 requirement for the IB Diploma should also take Music Theory during their sophomore year, as this class will provide them with the requisite knowledge to succeed in IB Music.

Jazz Band consists of two ability-based ensembles: Jazz I and Jazz II. Jazz I is audition-only and plays in the standard big-band instrumentation of 2 Alto Saxophones, 2 Tenor Saxophones, 1 Baritone Saxophone, 4-5 Trumpets, 4-5 Trombones, Guitar, Piano, Bass, and Drums. Jazz II is non-auditioned and is open to any and all instruments. Students in both Jazz I and Jazz II will learn to improve their individual and ensemble playing skills through the medium of jazz band literature. These musicians meet during zero period.

Mariachi Band Ensemble is a year-long class in which students will learn both the historical development of mariachi music and how to perform it on various instruments. These instruments include the voice, violin, trumpet, guitar, vihuela, and guitarrón. Students will learn how to advance their individual and ensemble playing skills through the medium of the Mariachi Band/Ensemble. This class will also give public performances throughout the school year.

This course is a study of how a product or service is conceived to the point it is utilized by the consumer. Students will be exposed to the fundamentals of: marketing, communications, economics, market segmentation, product decisions from innovation to production and packaging, pricing strategies, promotion decisions from advertising to personal selling, and placement decisions.
