The units throughout the course focus on a survey of various means and methods of literature and approaches to storytelling. Students explore themes of identity, discovery, and moral choice among others through analysis of short stories, poems, myths, plays and extended texts. With an emphasis on literary devices and utilizing diff erent methods of writing, students will practice comprehension and application of various foundational skills of reading and writing.

This course is a collaboration between the Chicago Public Schools and City Colleges of Chicago. Students who pass the course based on the criteria below will receive college credit for this course through Truman College. The course meets every day for 50 minutes at Roosevelt High School and is focused on the development of critical thinking, reading, and writing skills. English 101 is transferable to four-year universities and is a general education requirement at most two- and four-year colleges.

Students examine the development of British literature and culture from Anglo-Saxon times through the 21st century. Readings include works in all major genres. Students will continue analyzing texts and developing critical reading skills throughout the course. Additionally, students will enhance their grammar, vocabulary, and writing skills, while focusing on text annotation, theme development, compare/contrast essay writing, and proper citation. Students will also learn the fundamentals of the SAT and how to improve upon the reading, English, and writing portions of the exam.

Transitional English courses cover content competencies in the areas of Reading, Critical Thinking and Analysis, and Writing. In addition to the content competencies, the courses include process competency domains of: Metacognition and Essential Skills. These content competencies and process competencies are integrated throughout Transitional English instruction,In Transitional English students will engage in grade level CCSS through a wide variety of literary and informational texts that will prepare students for college level English courses. Students will engage in practices to support their mastery of the CCSS for their grade band. They will write to express themselves in multiple formats including narratives, investigative reports, literary analysis, and research. Students will also engage in discussions aligned to the speaking and listening standards

In this course, students will be introduced to the basics of fi lm analysis, cinematic formal elements, genre and narrative structure that are aligned to the relevant strands of CCSS. Students will develop the skills to recognize, analyze, describe and enjoy fi lm as an art and entertainment form. To understand how fi lms are constructed to make meaning and engage audiences, students will gain foundational knowledge in the formal elements (narrative, mise-en-scene, cinematography, sound and editing) that make up the fi lm, as well as some fundamental principles of analysis, genre, style, performance and storytelling.

Composition - Development of critical and analytical skills in writing and reading of expository prose. Writing assignments, as appropriate to the discipline, are part of the course.

An AP course in English Language and Composition engages students in becoming skilled readers of prose written in a variety of rhetorical contexts, and in becoming skilled writers who compose for a variety of purposes. The purpose of the AP English Language and Composition course is to enable students to read complex texts with understanding and to write prose of suffi cient richness and complexity to communicate eff ectively with mature readers.

This course presents an overview of marketing--the business operations that connect a product or service to its user. Students will learn skills and concepts such as the four P’s (people, processes, programs, performance) of marketing, channels of distribution, sales, customer service, advertising and promotion. They will practice communications and human-relations skills. Student will have ample opportunities for leadership development and building employment skills.

This course is designed for English Learners at the Beginning - Developing Levels of English language profi ciency, as defi ned in the World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) English Language Profi ciency Performance Defi nitions adopted by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). ESL II focus is on the development of students’ communication skills for social and instructional purposes, as well as their ability to communicate information, ideas, and concepts necessary for academic success in all core subject areas. It provides sequential language development in listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. ESL II – Two Period is based on intentional instruction with consistent exposure to complex texts, high levels of analytical thinking, exposure to the history and culture of the United States, and diff erentiated to meet the language needs of students. ESL II – Two Period curriculum is aligned to WIDA and Common Core State Standards and off ers an extra period of support to further develop English Learners’ Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing skills. One period is counted as an ELA credit and the other as a career education or elective credit. ESL instruction is a required component of services for English learners.
